Posted this in "dev" last night but I''m not sure that anyone reads it
I''ve been using RSpec in anger for perhaps a total of a few days
and just started playing with Story Runner. Love it.
I also started working on a patch, which ought to be simple, to
allow for Scenarios without supplied blocks to be treated as pending
-- much like "it" in Spec::DSL::ExampleAPI.
That said, I noticed something that seemed odd and chatted with Rein

Getting Started with Story Runner
I haven''t found any How To''s to use story runner and I''m not sure how to get
started.
Should I be looking for resources on how to use rbehave?
How do I generate my first Story?

testing behaviour or testing code?
hypothetical question for all you BDD experts:
I want to make sure that a :list action always returns widgets in
alphabetical order. There''s at least 2 ways of doing this:
it "should fetch items in alphabetical order" do
Widget.should_receive(:find).with(:order => "name ASC")
get :list
end
it "should fetch items in alphabetical order" do

plain text stories
Thanks to discussions on this list, suggestions from many of you and a
patch from Pat Maddox, we now have Plain Text User Stories in Story
Runner.

What is your workflow? Or how to use the story runner the right way.
I really would like to know how people are using the Story and Example
runner to write their software. It would be great to get some direction on
it, because I think I''m missing some points.
Taking the outside-in approach in thought:
At first we write a high-level customer-facing story, this story fails.
Then we start using mocks at object level to use them as a design tool,
and so we

Pretty story output for non-Rails project
I''m taking my first fledgling steps driving a new ruby (non-rails)
project with BDD. I''ve got a (test) story working. However, when I
run the story in TextMate (via command-r), the output is plain text.
See: http://skitch.com/georgeanderson/8grg/run-examples
How do I get the output to look pretty (formatted)?
rspec-1.1.3
OS X 10.5.2
TextMate v1.5.7 (1455)
Thanks,

Plain Text Story example
Hey all,
Does anyone have an example(s) of the plain text story runner for
rails? I have read David''s blog
(http://blog.davidchelimsky.net/articles/2007/10/22/plain-text-stories-on-rails)
about it but I would like to see some examples with all of the step
matchers included... I couldn''t find any more examples on google
talking about the plain text stories and the example

Any news on the rSpec books?
I admit it, when it comes to rSpec, I''m lazy. I''ve made a few feeble
attempts to use it, but for once I''m waiting for a book-length
treatment. At least two books were announced, I think. Can anyone in
the know please report on their progress?
Thanks

Reusing story snippets
I find myself doing this:
Scenario "logged in user visiting the home page" do
Given "A logged in user" do
a_logged_in_user
end
When "..."
Then "..."
end
The a_logged_in_user method is a helper method in helper.rb which sets
up the state so that the user can browse the website.
Later in the story of course, I can just do ''Given

Using RSpec to drive the design of a GUI desktop application
Hello everybody,
I''ve been using RSpec as a tool to create web applications for some time
now, in Rails, and using plain Ruby with WEBrick as well. The tool suits my
needs and the story runner is great.
Now there are things that aren''t solvable on the web, you''ll need a _real_
desktop application for those problems.
So I''ve toyed a bit around with various GUI

Any tips on teaching BDD with RSpec?
Hi
I hope this is not OT. I''m training my replacement at work to do BDD
Rails development. He''s done a CS/maths degree but has no
professional programming experience, so he''s never NOT done a project
without BDD. In a way I am jealous of his unspoilt situation :)
I''ve gone about things this way:
* first teach him some Ruby (he did mainly Java at

I need some guidance
I''m building an http communicator class for a web service API wrapper and
I''m trying to go through the BDD process in doing so. I''m having a bit of a
struggle figuring out how to set up the tests in relation to isolating
things appropriately as well as testing behavior vs testing implementation.
Specifically, I''m trying to set up a post method on my

State Based vs. Behaviour Based Spec/Testing
I''ve notice that a project like Rubinius has both a spec & a test
directory. Rspec has only a spec directory. Obviously I support
BDD, but isn''t there also a place for state based/verification
testing? I sometimes sense that I *do* want to practice Test Driven
Development. That is, I want some assurance that my production code
will run as intended. But I also

RSpec Texmate Bundle errors
I''ve the same problem as Alastair when running rspec command :
http://lists.macromates.com/pipermail/textmate/2007-October/022585.html
../spec/mate/runner.rb:34:in `run'': undefined method `parse'' for
Spec::Runner::OptionParser:Class
I fixed this for me by changing the offending line to :
::Spec::Runner::CommandLine.run(argv, STDERR, stdout)

Mocking, changing method interfaces and integration tests
Suppose we have a method ''foo'' which internally uses another method
''bar''.
Being good BDDers we mock out the ''bar'' method. After all, we only
want to spec the ''foo'' method - actually running the ''bar'' method
means slower, less maintainable and brittler specs. That''s why we <3

howto regressions on environment.rb in Rails projects
How would one write a spec on environment.rb in a rails app?
I was requiring a gem in environment.rb, but received a
"MissingSourceError". Generally, ruby raises a LoadError when it
can''t find a gem, but rails overrides this to raise a
MissingSourceError (since rails is expecting a required file to be in
lib/...). How would I write a spec to override this behavior,

Can not ''assigns'' value in View test
Hello everyone:
I am quit new to View test using rspec. I want to write spec for a
partial, which is rendered by a controller. However, the controller does not
pass data to the partial using instance variables, it uses symbol variable
instead. I read the example of view spec provided in the website. But the
example is using instance variable. So I am looking for a way of assigning
my test data

Assumption tests
Hi all,
I''ve been thinking about the whole validator/relationship speccing
issue, and I came up with a suggestion, which I''d love to get some
feedback on.
The full article is available at http://www.inter-sections.net/

relevant bit being about halfway down, but here''s the gist of it:

Step matchers
I think we all know that the readability of steps isn''t great right
now, and in fact there''s a very recent thread that discusses just
that. It was that recent thread that prompted me to explore this a
bit.
The basic idea is that you define step matchers, which have a regex,
and then you match step names against that regex. Kind of tough for
me to explain so I''ll just

DRYing up stories
I''m finding that I''m writing sets of very similar scenarios to check access
permissions for each of my actions. Does anyone have suggestions on how to
dry this up:

And a logged in Admin
When the user visits account/manage
Then he should get access
