Oh oh. Micro$oft just noticed VoIP
It will be interesting to see how many standards get broken, and how
many proprietary hooks get thrown into the pot. The bean counters smell
some money, and their OS franchise is waning:

Comparison of two very large strings
Hi,
I have a function in R that compares two very large strings for about 1
million records.
The strings are very large URLs like:-
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/sitesearch_selector.html?query=US+Visa+Laws&type=nyt&x=25&y=8.
..
or of larger lengths.
The data-frame looks like:-

US 2004 Elections map
even for people who didn't like the outcome of the US elections this

OT: Is randomization for targeted cancer therapies ethical?
Hi Folks:
**Off Topic**
Those interested in clinical trials may find the following of interest:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/19/health/research/19trial.html
It concerns the ethicality of randomizing those with life-threatening
disease to relatively ineffective SOC when new "biologically targeted"
therapies "appear" to be more effective. While the context may be new,

Has anyone had problems accessing random websites since going up to 6.4?
Since about the day after I got partly upgraded, if I try to access
nytimes.com, or orbitz.com, I get server not found.
With a lot of work, I, my manager, and the other admin, found that setting
options edns0 in /etc/resolv.conf fixed it - I suspect that the network
folks updated their internal nameservers (which are M$)

CentOS 8.0 1905 is now available for download
Heads up, Hyper-V Gen 2, CentOS 8 Server with GUI install results in a black screen as updates are needed for X to properly detect and load the video. If you can ssh into the box, do a yum update and it should grab the needed updates, then reboot.

New URL redirect checks
Dear all,
the new CRAN URL checks flag HTTP 301 redirects. While I understand
the intent, I think this is unfortunate, because several URL shortener
services use 301 redirects, and often a shorter URL is actually better
in a manual page than a longer one that can be several lines long in
the console and also potentially truncated in the PDF manual.
Some example shorteners that are flagged:

In the middle of a call I'd hit some DTMF sequence, which would dial

Please Recommend Affordable and Reliable Cloud Storage for 50 TB of Data
Hi,
Could you recommend affordable and reliable cloud storage for 50 TB of data?
Here are some important factors to consider:
1. Personal/non-commercial use.
2. Must be affordable, since I am unemployed most of the time and have
super low levels of income for the past 12 years since I graduated
from the National University of Singapore in 2007.
3. Cloud storage provider must not be a
