Nautilus and umask on CentOS 7 with Gnome3
We have a problem whereby Nautilus is not using the umask setting
defined by the user (e.g. when creating directories via the the 'Places'
menu). The umask used by Nautilus is 022, but the shell umask (in our
case) is set to 002
A quick search seems to suggest that this a common problem, and various
methods are suggested to 'fix' this - the only way that appears to work

File permission umask howto?
I'm trying to figure out how to cause rsync to
create the file on the backup server with 700 permission
and specific owner "some_user" (not root)
I try to do it in several way with no success.
The command I'm using is:
rsync -r -t -v -z /dir some_user@server::module
so that it don't copy permission
It always give the files 744 permission, that mean that every on can read

umask in nfs
Normal users umask is 022 set in /etc/bashrc
Obviously I can change that value to 002 but that would affect all files
created by each user.
Is it possible to set a different umask on nfs mounts only so that user
created files have a umask of 002 on files saved onto that mount?
man mount shows this is possible on some filesystems but man nfs doesn't
suggest that this is possible.

CentOS 5.2 - Nautilus - file types are not associated with an action and icons are not displayed
Hi all,
I use CentOS 5.2 as a desktop and the Gnome Nautilus doesn't display
icons related to the file types and all associated actions ("open with")
are lost. It is so bad, that the desktop shortcuts are displayed as
ordinary files "Filesystem.desktop" or
"openoffice.org-1.9-calc.desktop", and when I click on them, the
Nautilus wants to know what it should

umask setting in /etc/profile not working
Hey all,
We have the following set in /etc/profile :
umask 0002
so that it will affect all users. That should create all files as 664 and
all directories as 775 if I'm not mistaken.
Well I logged into the machine after this was set and just created a file
as one of the users who complained about permissions settings on files. And
this is what I saw:
[user1 at qa_host ~]$ ls -l test_qa

totem-nautilus and totem - mp3 duration
I have both totem-nautilus and the assorted gstreamer-plugins installed for
playing mp3 files through Totem.
I note that Totem doesn't appear to know the duration of an mp3. For example,
if I right-click on a wav or ogg file and click on the audio tab, one of the
fields is Duration and it tells me how long that file will play.
If I do the same with a mp3 file the duration field is always 0

nautilus problem and smbclient question
Hi,
I'm having a problem getting smb to work through Nautilus and in trying to
diagnose the problem, I ended up with another problem with smbclient(1),
or more likely a misunderstanding on my part about how it is supposed to
work. I'm using the following packages on an up2date RH8.0 box.
# rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-common-2.2.7-2
samba-2.2.7-2
samba-client-2.2.7-2
# rpm -qa | grep

sshd umask settings vs security
Will setting the umask that sshd inherits cause any security issues? It
would be nice to be able to set this in a system-wide fashion, rather
than in .login etc.
I'm thinking of Debian, where the setting is per-shell because nobody
seems to have thought of doing this.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Samba and Nautilus
Like a good many others, I encountered difficulty getting Nautilus to
work properly with Samba, in my case using SuSE 9.0. It now works
properly. Based on my experience, I offer the following suggestions.
First, before trying to do anything complex, make certain that your
lmhosts and hosts files are configured properly. Be sure that all IP
addresses and host names the Linux side match

Can't browse network using nautilus
Hi,
I'n using the nautilus file browser in a GNOME desktop environment on a
FC2 system.
If I enter smb:/// in the location bar in nautilus I can see the
network but whenever I try to look at the shares on a computer I get a
message saying that I do not have permissions to view the contents.
I looked in the archives and found a thread on a similar problem. This

Nautilus / Desktop Icons
Hi,
I've a nautilus problem with CentOS 4. It doesn't show the desktop
items any more (also after dropping all gnome files/dirs from a users
homedir) en the right mouse button menu also doesn't work.
Googling around I've found various items about the problem but until now
not a clear solution. Some people mention some 'browser mode in nautilus
preferences'. But I
