CentOS 3 sound intermittently goes out
I'm running CentOS 3.6. The hardware is an Intel D865GBF motherboard,
but I also have a generic soundblaster-compatible PCI card installed,
because back when I installed CentOS 3.1 I had problems getting the
onboard sound to work.
The PCI sound card worked fine until about the time I installed CentOS
3.5. Since then, however, it has failed intermittently. Once it
fails, it's generally

Making a windows packages with zip
In the past I have been able to make windows packages (containing only
R code) from my mac by simply zipping the installed package directory,
eg.
R CMD install asmrsim
cd ~/Library/R/library/
zip -r9X asmrsim asmrsim
(using code copied from this list, from Duncan Murdoch, I think)
However, since 2.3.0, windows users now get the following error:
Error in library(pkg, character.only = TRUE) :

syslinux 5.x, 6.x gpxlinux.0 forces reboot on some devices
On some devices (ThinkPad T60 - but not T61, kvm images, Intel board D865GBF)
gpxelinux.0 is the last file downloaded from tftp server then the device
reboots. This does not happen with SYSLINUX v4.06.
Any ideas.

Static on outgoing calls using either X100P or TDM400P
Hello. I've seen several posts talking about line quality using Digium
cards that are sharing IRQs or on machines where X is running but after
trying all of those fixes I am still having a problem with line static
on outoing calls. BTW, calls that are from one extension to another
extension have no static, however, they have occasional clicks and
pops. At any rate, I was wondering if

Will Centos work with the Intel D865GLC
I need to replace my Abit BE7 board (cannot run the newer Linux) and
keep my near new IDE HD's (250 GB). A D865GLC is new available that
uses the Intel 865G chip set, but I have no experience in matching
Mobo's with Linux.

Best CentOS to install on *old* laptop?
I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it
going again. (Currently it boots either Windows 95 or some
then-contemporary version of Slackware.) The CDROM is external (SCSI,
I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot
floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be
thinking about for this?

Thanks Laine,
Mea Culpa,
Couldn't reproduce, or found the multiple duplicate entries in the guest
pci domain/bus/slot/function space which got resolved easily.

Downloading files not stored in database?
Hello list,
I am trying to add functionality to my application that will allow users
to download files that are not stored in a database.
All the examples I have found find the file by ID. which I can not do.
Here is my code from the view:

Hooks before a scenario but not the background: possible or bad practice
Hi,
I''d like to activate FakeFS for some scenarios, which I tag @fakefs,
however it seems Before(''@fakefs'') runs before the background of the
feature - unfortunately this clobbers Grit, and I can''t
Grit::Repo.new(...) in the backbround.
Is it currently possible to get a hook to run before a scenario, but
not the Background of the feature?
Or am I mistaken in

Mappery breakthrough : Garmin topo, vista, rino, under linux & CXO
As most of you know, I've been trying to make GPSs and topo
maps usable under Fedora Core 4 linux, using CrossoverOfficePro (CXO)
5.0.1.
I've belabored nine or ten specialized lists for six or eight
weeks, parcelling out pieces of the problem wherever I hoped they
might arouse interest and knowledge. I've gotten invaluable help and
encouragement from all of them, on the lists

still ACL bug in 3.0.14a
Sparc Solaris / UFS file system. I have some ACL's set up for a handful
of users and its all worked flawlessly with every incarnation of Samba
I've used over the past couple years, which would be most.
Last Friday evening I upgraded from 3.0.11 to 3.0.13 and some of the users
I have some ACL's set up for promptly found Monday that they couldn't save

ups question from your web site
Dear Nick,
thanks for writing. I no longer work on development of UPS drivers;
you will probably get a more up-to-date answer from the nut-upsuser
mailing list (cc'd).
I don't know if the Back-UPS 550 has similar commands to the Back-UPS
ES 650. If it has a USB connection, then the answer is probably yes.
The UPS will automatically turn itself back on after a power failure;

Centos5 install failure
A couple weeks ago I attempted to install Centos5 to replace an
increasingly decripit Fedora Core 1 installation. Centos went onto an
80GB piece of previously unallocated space on /dev/hda, using the
default configuration offered by anaconda. The installation process went
smoothly, however, I was unable to boot Centos when it completed due to
"Grub failure." IOW, I never even got

Improving help in R
Hello R people
I always wander what other people say about the R help. Finally after some years of using, I decided that it is probably time to try to do something about it, because the feeling of gritting teeth does not go away with years of usage. :) Moreover, I think it is one of the few things where R does not kick asses to the other statistical softwares. So, to the point:
I get the feeling

ISOdate returns incorrect date?
Dear all,
I have found the following (for me) incomprehensible behaviour of
ISOdate (POSIXct):
> ISOdate(1900,6,16)
[1] "1900-06-15 14:00:00 Westeurop?ische Sommerzeit"
> ISOdate(1950,6,16)
[1] "1950-06-16 14:00:00 Westeurop?ische Sommerzeit"
Note that in the first case I get the 15th of June back, not the 16th as
I would have expected!

Newer gamin package for CentOS 4.x?
The gam_server in gamin-0.1.7-1.2.EL4 occasionally goes into an
infinite loop (googling indicates there have been problems with this
in gam_server for a long time, I see "another attempt to fix ..."
dating from 2004). Does anyone know whether a newer version of gamin
has finally fixed this and if so where an RPM or SRPM for the fixed
version, suitable for CentOS 4, might be found?

Solaris 10 and "store dos attributes"
I'm having trouble with files being marked read-only in Windows because the
Solaris file owner does not have write-permissions on the file; group-write is
allowed:
-r--rw---- 1 user group 32 Feb 13 14:19 testfile.txt
I thought that setting "store dos attributes = yes" for this share would allow
the "read only" setting to be stored in extended attributes, but it
