Upgrade 3.4 --> 3.7 went awry: rpmdb hosed
I installed CentOS 3.4 from a CD image I'd burned a while ago, and then attempted to update with yum to 3.7. All the packages installed OK, but at the very end of final cleanup I got an error message from db4 saying to "RUN RECOVERY". I did "rpm --rebuilddb" which may have been the wrong thing -- it issued an error about "pages missing". I then ran it again,

yum updated to 3.3, rpmdb corrupted
I'd guess this is probably something pretty specific to my test box, but when I yum updated to 3.3 my rpmdb got totally hosed. Unfortunately, I didn't save the error that occured at the time because a rpm --rebuilddb _appeared_ to fix the problem. Unfortunately I found out later that I was left with a db that only contained a subset of the actual install base. I'm now trying to

yum hangs when Reading Local RPMDB
All of a sudden yum hangs on a Centos 4.5 (updated to the latest patch before 4.6) when I try to use it. "clean metadata" didn't help. The output of -d5 shows it gets to the point of "Reading Local RPMDB" and then sits there. The process doesn't die, but doesn't seem to do anything from that point on. strace shows this: futex(0xb76dcae8, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL I

Yet another yum/rpm update problem
I am in the process of updating a dozen or so workstations from CentOS 4.3 to CentOS 4.4. I set up a local YUM repository, and have been able to successfully update all systems except for one. Both yum and rpm either hang or core dump on this system. I've done a "yum clean all" and an "rpm --rebuilddb" (after deleting the __db files). I was able to

unverified files in 5.4
Hey, Gang! To ensure that a file hasn't been corrupted or tampered with, you can use rpm to verify the package it came from. Well, I found this: rpm -Vv util-linux .... ........ /usr/bin/cal S.?..... /usr/bin/chfn ........ /usr/bin/chrt S.?..... /usr/bin/chsh .... Does anyone else get this? And what would be the proper course of action at this point? Thanks mucho. --

Damaged rpm database?
Hello, while doing some maintenance on a Centos 4.4 box, I ran rpm -qa --last and got: error: rpmdb: damaged header #91 retrieved -- skipping. ...lots of lines identical to the one above and finally: the_last_package_I_installed_yesterday.rpm all the other rpms in reverse installation order I've seen via google that this should mean there is a damaged rpm database and it should be rebuilt

Problem with xen on Centos-4.4?
I am running a Xen installation on a Centos-4.4 based test box, my desktop unit, and I am having intermittent problems installing certain pieces of software. Some time back I posted to this list regarding my inability to install Adobe Acrobat on this unit and was advised to essentially repackage the software and try again. This is beyond my present means of knowledge or time to acquire same and

Prelink failure
I have a number of CentOS6 machines, and on one of them, the daily prelink cron job aborts. Any ideas what to look for? /etc/cron.daily/prelink: /etc/cron.daily/prelink: line 47: 9381 Aborted (core dumped) /usr/sbin/prelink -av $PRELINK_OPTS >> /var/log/prelink/prelink.log 2>&1 I'm unfamiliar with prelink, so I'm not sure what to look for in the logs.

Upgrading from RH AS-3 to ??
Hi! I'm trying to upgrade my Redhat 3AS server, but I'm encountering problems. The first problem was, I didn't know what repository to use. I settled on http://mirror.centos.org/, but using it is strange, as not all mirror servers have all of the directories, and so sometimes links appear broken, but the problem goes away if I hit reload. A number of them have empty directories,

Should I and can I upgrade GTK+/PyGTK?
I'm trying out different music players. One that looks promising is called Quod Libet: http://www.sacredchao.net/quodlibet I downloaded the tar file and attempted to install it. I got this message: [dave at localhost quodlibet-0.13.1]$ ./quodlibet.py E: You need GTK+ 2.6 and PyGTK 2.6 or greater. E: You have GTK+ 2.4.13 and PyGTK 2.4.0. E: Please upgrade GTK+/PyGTK. New to CentOS, and wondering about application availability
Centos Mailing List, Hello. I have just recently installed CentOS on my home computer, and just joined this mailing list. I have a lot of questions so I will have quite a few postings in the next few days. I was using Fedora Core 4 for a few weeks, but it was unstable and had trouble reading some of my DVD drives and other issues. So, I decided to switch to another distribution. I

RHN-like system for CentOS?
Team, Is anyone aware of a Red Hat Network alike system of server package update status that could be adapted for CentOS3? I'm not interested in the complete management aspect (channels, scheduling remote updates, etc) but merely the ability to see your list of systems and determine which are out of date with XXX packages. If you happen to manage a large-ish number of RHES3 systems, you

disabling prelink?
What are the pros and cons of disabling prelinking in CentOS 4? From what I understand, prelinking is ment to be performance improvement (faster loading time for binaries). I can see some potential benefit on workstations where many different processes are started frequently. But how big is that benefit in real life? Would I slow down things noticably if there is no prelinking? Is

turning off prelinking?
In short, the reason considering (and still only considering) turning it off is to make tripwire usable again (security vs. performance, I guess). Is it possible to completely turn it off system-wide? Any additional steps needed on the existing system (that already have half of the binaries prelinked)? What order of performance degradation to expect? If it is minor, nobody is going to cry

c4.4: OpenSSL Behavior: handshakes/ nrpe, snmpd, et al.
Hello list, johnny, karanbir, rodrigo, william, all, Looks like some changes in 4.4 with openssl behavior I thought to ask about now that things have quieted down slightly since release. I use openssl with my nagios nrpe plugins, and now am getting a "could not complete SSL handshake". I will of course post to nagios list but first want to find out from centos side some key info re:
