Apparently in order to get Japanese input working, I need to edit my Xdefaults file. By hunting on the web, I've read that I can create my own Xdefaults file, but it's been very difficult to determine where I should create it. After the last round of patches to febootstrap, the image-based test in libguestfs still failed. It turned out that this happens because Debian started replacing /var/run and /var/lock with symlinks that point to a tmpfs mounted to /run.
