Japanese Language Support?
When I installed CentOS, I was careful to install Japanese language support.
However, now that CentOS is running, I can't seem to get Japanese
language input going. I clicked on the top menu bar to add the "Input
Method Switcher", and now there is a little white square on the top
panel. If I click on it, gives me the option of using ASCII input, or to
"Add or Remove".

Possible bug using FLAG_WORD_BREAKS with fullwidth Unicode codepoints
I think I found a bug in Xapian 1.5 when using FLAG_WORD_BREAKS for input that contains characters in Unicode Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms (https://unicode.org/charts/PDF/UFF00.pdf).
Since I am undecided yet if and how to fix this in Xapian I haven't come up with a pull request. Because trac currently is offline, I could not file a bug. I hope it's OK to post my analysis here first,

Die, KDE! Die! (Sticking with Gnome and Yum Conflicts)
Okay, I experimented with both KDE and Gnome, and decided I'd rather use
Gnome. After making this decision, I wanted to remove KDE, because I
like to keep my hard drive as lean as possible.
I accomplished this, or so I thought, by running:
# yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)".
It seemed to work. Removed a whole bunch 'o stuff.
Okay, but then I wanted to install k3B,

Missing Dependency problem while upgraing a pure (?) whitebox 4 install to Centos 4.2
Hi all
I don't have the full Centos 4 CD distro, only the minimal server one
(single CD). I use whitebox 4 for desktop installs and then change the
necessary files whitebox-release, diskdumputils, yum etc. & change it
to centos...never had a problem.
This time however, I don't know why, but I chose the "Everything"
option in the package selection dialog during install. Post

How can I make these command prompt settings into universal settings?
I've got it so that I can enable Japanese input into an application by
typing the following at a command prompt (with FireFox, for example):
[dave at localhost ~]$ kinput2 -canna &
[1] 10631
[dave at localhost ~]$ XMODIFIERS='@im=kinput2' LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.utf8 firefox
However, I would rather not have to type in all that craziness each time
I want to start an application. Further,

[fdo] Standardization of input methods on Linux?
Hello!
I don't know how well this fits within the scope of Freedesktop's
current work, but as a Linux user who studies languages, I think there's
an area that could definitely use improvement, namely input methods for
various Asian and other non-romance languages. While several solutions
for inputting these languages are available, most of them seem to be of
the "rocket

Shell Script - Compare packages. rpm.
Hi,
I need a script which makes the package compa??o rpm's through two
text files ...
Since a file is the output of the command *rpm-qa > pkg.out *
And the second file is a list of several packages rpm's, multiple
versions and architectures.
My idea is to compare a package *x* file pkg.out with several
packages *y* of the file update.out and know

Permission problem in message command with guest ftp user
I haven't seen this posted so I will add one more reason why the message
command may not work: Permissions.
I have this in my [global]:
message command = /bin/bash -c 'cat %s | mutt -s You_logged_on jlh;rm %s' &
This never would work and I never could figure out why.
Turns out that I have guest user ftp, who for security reasons doesn't have
much in the way of write

Code Page Problem with samba 1.9.18p4?
I am running samba version 1.9.18p4 on a sinix machine (unix svr4).
My NT workstations use the german code page 850.
In earlier versions of samba (1.9.17p2) the character mapping worked
just fine, using
character set = iso8859-1
client code page = 850
in my smb.conf.
Since upgrading to samba 1.9.18p4 this don't work any more.
Is this a known problem?
I tripple-checked my smb.conf entries,

1.9.18p4 broke charset latin1
Hi!
updated to p4 the other day, and now the "character set = iso8859-1"
option doesn't work anymore. I didn't change anything in the smb.conf
file but this:
unix password sync = True
time server = yes
and it worked in 1.9.18p3 :/
Has anyone else seen this?
Samba runs on FreeBSD 2.2.6 from the ports collection. (I don't think
that password sync works for this

New on the Web Site
While I''m in temporary retirement, I''ve decided spend a little time
experimenting with new things and making some updates to the web site. The
biggest result of this effort to date has been:
http://shorewall.sf.net/Shorewall_Squid_Usage.html
This outlines how to use Squid as a transparent proxy running on the
firewall, in the DMZ or in the local network. In the latter two
