Tall tale of woe....
For the last year or so i have been having problems in general with samba (various versions) on the same box. Dell 2500 Xeon 1.8 with 2gb of ram running Redhat 8. What will happen from time to time (although its now happened 3 times in the last 5 days, hence this email) is people will be slow to log in, if at all. Several things appear to happen. The main one is that a smbd process which

Slow logon with samba
Hi all. Everything has been running great, untill 2 weeks ago when I applied redhat errata including a new kernel. (done it loads of times before) Rebooted and all seemed ok (it was half term for me, so maybe 20 users in at the very most) It wasn't until last week people started to complain about how long it was taking to log in. unfortunatly everytime I tried it went in straight away. Performance Issues With Samba and RedHat 8.
Appologies if this has been asked before, i have searched the archives and while there are some almost related issues, none really answer my question/problem. Recently (about 4 months ago) we purchased a new Dell 2600 (2.0Ghz Xeon 2GB Ram), Machine (single cpu) and migrated the data and system from rh 6.2 to 8 on this new server. By migrate i mean Installed rh8 fresh and moved the user data

Samba and Windows ACL Issue
Hi all got a bit of and odd problem with ACL. Ive read up on a few bits in the samba howto and read some threads on here about it. Im not sure if this is a bug, something ive not done, doing wrong etc so anyone that could shed some light on it that would be great. Basically the windows box handles all user account processing and during creating a script for all this it will attempt to change the

tdm400p and dell 2600 poweredge
Hi all: I've been developing and testing on a tdm400p card and it's been going well. As you probably know, the tdm400p needs an ide power supply, but the dell poweredge 2600 that this card is destined for eventually has all the power supplied on the backplane with no ide cables. The thing is, on the motherboard in the server, there is an ide ribbon connector, and beside that, something

vorbis on playstation 2
Hello, I'm interested in getting vorbis up and running on the PlayStation 2. I'm an official developer, not a ps2 linux developer, but the issues should be roughly the same. I've gotten the code to compile but our setup (intentionally) doesn't have libm so I'm seeing references to several double-precision math functions. Some of the issues I'm seeing: - As reported on

Issue with old style dos truncation
Hi there. Recently upgraded from 2.2.9 to 3.05 everything is working great except for one small snag. I noticed it when working on the unattended Win2k installation, when it was copying a more than 8 Character Folder. Normally and certainly on 2.2.9 it would truncate the file name say from DellDrivers to DellDr~1 and would still work. However, it was truncating the file name to D1DRER~B (or

Forcing Users to change passwords.
Hi, Samba-3 with LDAP backend is capable in this. I'm using it and it works. All you have to do, is to use LDAP and set proper account policies: $ pdbedit -P "bad lockout attempt" -C 5 (after 5 wrong password, user account will be locked out - samba sets password hashes to ***NOPASSWORD*** and user is unable to logon). $ pdbedit -P "min password length" -C 9 # password

On-write Automatic Snapshot
Apologies if this has been addressed, but looking at some of the sun blogs and google searches I have not been able to find an answer. Does ZFS support on write automatic snapshots? For example, according to defined policy, every time a file is written a snapshot is created with the diff stored. I can see this being useful in high security environments and companies that have extreme regulatory

Weird thing.
I upgraded a fileserver I admin to samba 2.2.5 from 2.0.7 almost a week ago and whlst I was on site today something very strange happened. I found that I couldn't browse anything on network neighbourhood from any of the machines and looking at the log files it appears that a windows98 machine managed to elect itself local master. I have got the usual: local master = yes domain master

It was working find on Friday, then this morning it stopped

The most weird thing i've ever seen (networking)
Hi, I've installed a mail server using CentOS 4.4 Now, if i reboot the server remotely by ssh, when it cames up, i have no network. The interface is up and everything looks pretty fine. But i can't even ping other machines in the same intranet. If i reboot it locally at the console, the network cames just fine. Never seen nothing like this. The mind boggles :( Any ideas ? Warm

Multiple Rails Apps in 1 Virtual Host on Apache 1.3
After attempting this on my own using the Apache "Alias" directive I noticed that it did not work in all cases: http://myserver/app1/ (this worked) http://myserver/app1 (this failed, I won''t bore you with the rewrite logs of why) This led me to the following article http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoDeployMoreThanOneRailsAppOnOneMachine Which I followed. rpmbuild -bb samba3.spec
Hello, When I try to build using rpmbuild --bb samba3.spec after installing the SRPM and modifing the samba3.spec and adding --with-acl-support my RPM file comes out to be just over 52 megs. How can I strip it down to be the regular size? I remember rebuilding from SRPM and it created a debug rpm as well. It didnt do that this time. Any ideas. Spencer

Memory leak in Samba with APW printing configuration ?
Hi, On Samba 3.0.2a on debian stable with a 2.6.5 kernel, each time I use APW to configure my printers, smbd takes more and more memory and the kernel does an Out of Memory (I have 512 Mo RAM). It's Xerox printers. Is the problem known (and corrected in 3.0.3rc1) or is it new ? Thanks for the answer. Cordialy, -- Yohann F.
