Tomcat 4 on Centos 4.1
I use OpenNMS and this is how I install it. So far it's worked every time
(6 installs). Make sure you open up your IPTables as needed. Let me know
how it goes.

Installing Java 1.4.2
For scalix on Centos the Scalix forum provides instructions for
convincing Scalix that Centos is Redhat:
http://www.scalix.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=516&highlight=centos
I am up to the point of getting Java JDK1.4.2 installed.
I did a: yum list|grep "java" and got:

installed

AW: executable on /etc/rc.local doesn't start
Do you have any logfile output? First check whether the environment
(JAVA_HOME for example) is set before calling
/usr/apache-tomcat-5.5.17/bin/startup.sh. For example
<<<< snip
#!/bin/bash
export JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk1.5.0_05_x86_64
bin/startup.sh
>>>> snip

Migrating away from Nagios
I have to rebuild a new Nagios box and thought this might be a good time
to migrate away. I use snmp mostly for everything but with the fork Nagios
endured I wonder about putting any more effort into the project.
I probably should look at OpenNMS again, but the other options I think might
work are Icinga (Should be trivial to migrate) or Zenoss or maybe even Zabbix?
Anyone have experience in

NMS Opinions
A recent post that mentioned Zabbix inspired me to have a look at them again
while I was waiting on something as it?s been a while since I looked at them.
Currently, I was using Nagios but had to start using Munin to add some functionality
I needed and don?t want to continue down this road of supporting umpteen different
packages.
Between Zabbix, Pandora and HyperIQ, what would anyone familiar

Monitor Network Traffic
What is the best way to monitor the total incoming / outcoming network traffic of CentOS server. I think that the solution is to monitor the network interfaces and to send SNMP packets to remote server. But is it possible?

Somewhat OT:
Hi,
I'm looking for a monitoring system that support snmp v3. I want to
monitorize linux servers and network switches. Currently, I am trying
to use zabbix, but sadly, it lack at present features that I need. For
example, I want to get reporting screens with data and graphs from
network switches, I'd like to configure one only port of a given
switch and that is used as templates for the

How to monitor non-SNMP SIP devices ?
Hi,
I'm seeing a trend in which SIP devices such as Yealink SIP phones (with
v72 firmware), are dropping support of SNMP in favor of "HTTP eventing" if
may call this as such :
when configuring the SIP device, you can define a couple of HTTP URL which
triggered when some event occur (end of boot, on hook, ...).
How do deal with those devices ?
Do you still try to monitor them with

Monitoring services
What's available to remotely monitor services? What I'd like is something
that can run scripts for each service to connect to a port and verify that
it's up, and then send me an SMS message (phone text) to let me know which,
if any, are down.
Also, does a script exist that checks all the services listed by chkconfig
and reports those that should be up but are down?

Cacti/snmp question
Hi,
Trying to follow the recipe at
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Cacti_on_CentOS_4.x
Which has a bit of an update for 5.x, but no joy.
Anyone know what this from Cacti should suggest?

+ Found data query XML file at '/var/www/cacti/resource/script_server/host_cpu.xml'

Remote system up/down monitoring tool?
I have a small number of boxes in different locations, and currently have
a fairly crude cron job running on each, which does a ping of one or more
of the other boxes, and if the ping fails, it emails me to say the other
box might be down. It then emails me again the next time the other box
appears to be up.
Of course, this can't distinguish between the remote box really being down
and there

Tomcat5 with Oracle/Sun jdk on CentOS 5.8
I know this question could be asked on tomcat or possibly other mailing
lists, but I'm hoping I can get some help here instead of joining yet
another list.
I'm running tomcat5 on CentOS 5.8. I'm trying to setup Oracle/Sun java
rather than icedtea. I've installed the latest jdk 1.7 and setup
alternatives on centos for java and javac:
