CentOS 4.5 and CentOS 5.0 News
Hi,
I use CentOS as a firewall/proxy/webserver/fileserver
in my small network. As the small-spec machine with
CentOS is heavily loaded/used I can't afford downtime.
20 GB, pentium II with only 128 MB RAM.
However I want to know the news on 4.5 is it due soon?
Can I gain more by running CentOS 3.x range on such an
old machine like mine?
Will CentOS 5.0 mean you need a minimum of 512 RAM?

IPCop updates, Evolution Calendar rarely crashes now
I know a lot of you are using IPCop where you work. They have three
(3) updates posted, during the past two (2) days. The last one, I'm
getting an error, when I try to Download it, and I will report that to
the IPCop list or bugzilla after I send this message.
"No such file or directory

proxy server - ipcop vs CentOS
I have purchased a used Compaq DL360 which I was going to use as a proxy
server. Presently, we are using a cheap box with ipcop which is working
fine but it didn't have much RAM (64MB), etc.
This new box we will want to run squid and perhaps dansguardian for
filtering (this is a non-profit company) and I'm wondering if I should
just put ipcop on it or would it be smarter/better to install

New User: Kudos, small/old platform, RPM Illegal Instruction
Hello All!
My 1st use of CentOS went well on my later eqpt. Thanks and congrats on
a good product.
Figured I might as well see if I could use it on some old stuff, still
good but obsolete.
Picked an AMD 5x86 (equivalent to a Pentium 75 MHz) and decided to see
if I could make it my gateway/router.
Had some difficulties, not unexpected. Old CD drive couldn't read the
CDs. No boot from CD

PV DomU kernel 2.4(.34) for IPCop
Hi everyone,
I am currently in the process of setting up a firewall/access point
DomU and I would like to know if there is any way to run a linux
kernel 2.4(.34) based system as a DomU. The primary reason for this
is that I want to run IPCop on such a kernel, but also that I
consider kernel 2.4 based systems to be more suitable for some
applications, especially for use as a firewall.

Firewall frustration
Well FWbuilder is NOT easy. The documentation does not match the
current GUI. Now the box is locked up. I will have to pull it again,
hook it up to a kybd/VGA and reset iptables....
Maybe Shoreline with webmin....
Problem is I want a REAL router/firewall with little work. Both public
and private nets have routable addresses. No NATing for me! I just
help write the RFC ;) And all the

pxelinux localboot
Just download Syslinux 1.75 and set it up on my SuSE 7.3 box with latest ISC
3.x DHCP release. I am using the SuSE supplied in.tftp, and an IBM PC client
with a IBM EtherJet (actually an Intel Pro 100) nic. Everything was actually
quite straight forward to setup, and I got PXELinux working without too much
trouble.
I am booting several different DOS images without problem, and think my

winbind with ipcop
We have a samba server behind a firewall with the IP address 192.168.200.2
and a Windows 2000 Domain controller with the IP address 192.168.255.1 .
When we put the samba in the same subnet then it woks fine.
We forwarded the fooling ports:
TCP and UDP

192.168.200.2 to 192.168.255.1 port 138

Problem with SysLinux but not with LILO
Hi,
I am trying to use two products that use SysLinux and finally realised the
SysLinux is the cause of my woes. I'm trying to use Freesco and IPCop. IPCop
version 1.3 used a different boot loader to 1.4 which uses SysLinux. I have
been through numerous trials and tribulations in trying to get Freesco to
work but eventually gave up and went with IPCop. I kept getting the "Boot

Where to best start looking for voicemail/moh sound quality problem?
I'm running Asterisk 1.2.13 on a Solaris 10 X86 box behind an IPCop
firewall on a 5Mbps down/512 up cable connection.
I'm having sound quality problems when users call in for voicemail and
with music on hold. The sound is choppy and muffled while souding pretty
good for calls inside the network.
I'd appreciate some pointers as to where to start looking to improve things.

CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway
Hi Everyone,
I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to
filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus
the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router
or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know
where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server

a list of which kernel versions work with klibc
Is there a list of which kernel versions (are supposed to) work with
(each version of) klibc?
I do recall reading something that said klibc should run under any
version of the kernel, regardless of which version it is compiled
against. Following the new instructions on this list earlier (to use
the KLIBCKERNELSRC= parameter to point to the installed kernel
headers) as well as also making the

How to deal with pciback?
Hello everybody,
for just one week I try to install three servers on an OpenSuSE 10.3
dom0 equipped with 4 NICs. One server is an OX using the onboard NIC via
xenbr0. This server runs!! For my IPCop server I intended to use the
three remaining NICs (Intel Pro100/S, 3Com 3C590, Realtek RTL-8139).
These three NICs should be used natively by my IPCop. So I tried to use
the pciback driver. I wrote a

shaping passive ftp traffic
Hi,
I have tried unsuccesfully to limit my ftp server send speed in linux.
I have an ipcop linux firewall/router with 2 nics. 1 nic (eth1) is
connected to a 3mbit/384Kbit cable connection and the other (eth0) a
switch. Behind it i have a suse linux box and a windows box.
On the suse box i run proftpd. I need to shape my passive ftp send
speed to 34KBytes because if it is maxed out at 45K

outbound shaping
Well it appears i have no clue what im doing. I thought i had the below
script working to shape outbound ftp traffic....however, it is shaping
inbound traffic too. I have NO clue why.
Please comment if anyone has any ideas why this doesnt work. I want to
shape only outbound ftp traffic and not inbound or lan traffic.

my shaping rules wont work on nat box
I am currently running the following script on an internal machine to
shape outbound ftp and email traffic.
I am trying to move the script to my nat router (ipcop with 2 nic cards)
so that it shapes the whole network and not only the outbound of 1 box.
I have cable modem -> ipcop (eth1) >(eth0 - 192.168.1.1) >
192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101.
The scripts works great running on

IP Cop as a firewall and QOS
We are looking for a good firewall replacement which will basically do pot
blocking and QOS.
Our current solution just plain stinks..
We basically need to handle the traffic of a few web servers, mail server
and asterisk box. The most traffic this device will need to handle is what
can be shoved through a T1.
I don't mind buying an appliance to get something solid but IP Cop just
