specing rescue, ensure and else blocks of an Exception
Greetings, I''m using rspec with rcov for my applications and there is one issue which I cannot solve nor can find any proper information regarding it: specing what is in a rescue block in case of an exception. I''m using Ruby on Rails and I usually make use of exceptions in my controllers, like the following example: def action @foo = Foo.find(1)

How to test for exceptions
Hi folks, I''m in the process of converting a Test::Unit functional test to RSpec, but I''ve run into a slight problem. I tried looking through the documentation but I still don''t know what I missed. Thanks in advance, Blake describe VenuesController, "on update" do before(:each) do @venue = mock("venue")

rendering templates from an engine''s app dir
Hi there, i have a rails application which use the active_rbac engine for user and access control. How can I use the original login, etc. forms which were provided with the engine as partials in my application? I''ve tried all of the below mentioned approaches and it seems so that I cannot reach the templates provided under the [RAILS_HOME]/vendor/plugins/active_rbac/app/views directory.

Problems with raising errors on a mocked object
I''m trying to mock a object to raise a certain error. By doing so I get a ArgumentError on ActiveRecord''s save! method: http://pastie.caboo.se/85628 I''ve tried to debug it but just can''t seem to find what I''m doing wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Eivind Uggedal

Failing to raise an exception in a stub
I''ve come across rather strange behaviour when trying to raise an exception in a stubbed method. I''m speccing the behaviour of a Rails create action, where I''m using save! to catch failed saves. In the case of working save, I''m using the following stub: @client.stub!(:save!).and_return(true) which works fine. However, in the negative case,

Controller Isolation
Hi, I have a project that I had running under rspec 0.6.x and recently upgraded to 0.7.2. I am trying to isolate my controllers from the database as I go through and change all the specs to run under 0.7.2. I am having a problem where I need to make the create! method return the mocked object as well as raise RecordInvalid exception. Is this at all possible? I use the rescue statement in my

no build! on association?
Hi guys, it seems like I missed some trivial stuff going on in edge rails. Can you point me in the right direction about what happened to the build! method? Simple scenario: class User << AR has_many :posts end class Post belongs_to :user end console: >> u = User.find(1) >> u.posts [] >> u.posts.create!({:title => "Foo", :content =>

Partials - asked before never got reply
I''m trying to figure out how multiple partials in one page would be configured when they are based on some action in the controller. As an example - I have a main/welcome page. If someone new or a user not logged in arrives at this page I display both a registration form and a login form. However, if they are logged in then those forms should not show up on that page. Also should

Can''t seem to spec a ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid exception properly...

I am trying numerous things, the latest one is

controller spec with model that validates_uniqueness
I want to use mocks and stubs to test the controller, but am having trouble getting my validation not to trigger. Here''s the code: # spec: Image.stub!(:find).and_return(@image) @image.should_receive(:save!).once.with(:any_args) put :update, :id => @image.id, :category_id => @category.id, :image => {:name => ''test'', :image_number =>

strange errors in dev.log and webserver log
Hi guys, I have encountered a strange error in one of my applications. The details are the following: The application is a very simple one, I have one model, Cards, it has some pretty basic stuff, some after_save methods for saving uploaded files to their places. I have an UI where I can manage the Card records, with the default methods, including ''edit'' cards_controller.rb:

jEdit Snippets for Ruby on Rails

Shared behavior and_raise problem, and site aestetics
Hello, Is anyone else having trouble with the and_raise method on mocks, with respect to shared behaviors? If I do the following instead: foo.should_receive(:bar).and_return { raise } everything seems to work. I have been supplying no arguments to and_raise, by the way. Also, you may want to make the background in the code examples on the home page a little lighter. I am hardly able to

rescue
Hi, whats the correct way to spec a rescue? This will raise it but doesnt test my code''s response # controller def edit @foo = Foo.find(params[:id]) rescue flash[:notice] = "Unknown foo #{params[:id]}" redirect_to foos_path end # spec it "should flash error if not found" do Foo.should_receive(:find).and_raise get :edit, :id

Example controller spec no worky?
I''m trying to spec a dead simple "show non-existent record should render 404" case, but it seems the RecordNotFound exception is making it impossible for some reason. #controller def show @event = Event.find(params[:id]) end #spec - pretty much straight from the rspec site before do Event.stub!(:find) get :show, :id => ''broken'' end #

save! not allowed after validates_uniqueness
I have this in a model validates_uniqueness_of :aspect, :scope => :user_id In an instance method of the same model I have "save!" but I don''t touch the :aspect attribute in that instance method at all. Whenever that save! command is run however I get this error: ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid: Validation failed: Aspect has already been taken I don''t

Down with Lambda!!
Rspec is all about using natural language to define behavior. In this context, I feel that lambda is sorely out of place. I was chatting on #irc and a pal of mine (wycats) proposed an interesting alternative: alias_method :doing, :lambda so instead of something like lambda {post :create, {:title => nil}}.should raise_error(ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid) we get doing {post :create, {:title

Custom ActiveRecord Error Message
I''m generating 3 models on 1 controller and i''m rescuing ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid for validation errors, however 2 of the models have the same attribute called "name", and if there''s an error on that field, I wouldn''t know whether that belongs to model A or model B. What then is the best way of modifying the error message of a validation error

Problems Processing multiple form elements generated by javascript actions
Hi all, After many days of struggling, I have a multi-model form with ajax elements more or less working, but I''m hitting a wall with a few bugs that I can''t figure out. Guidance would be very much appreciated. I''m using the Ryan Bates technique from Advanced Rails recipes to dynamically add and remove elements on a multi-model form.
