beginner resources for CentOS
I'm looking for a good online (or even a good) "how to be a sysadmin" guide
for beginners geared towards CentOS users.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I am a VERY new user to Linux and have just installed it (SUSE version 8.1)
and can just about make my way around the machine although there a many
things that I still don't know how to do (eg. looking at the network
neighborhood the Linux machine should be able to see).
I have several Windows PCs (running maily NT and Win 98) and the first
obvious thing is to get

pc of windows98, I tried to configure that following "using samba", I

Linux basics
Hello,
I am just starting to research Asterisk and I would like to install it on a PC to try out. I have looked around quite a bit but I haven't found much information on the Linux part. I know you need to put Linux on the PC first but what version or flavor of Linux do you recommend? I contacted Red Hat and they had not heard of Asterisk and they said Asterisk is not certified for Red Hat.

Kerberos in the handbook
Is anyone currently working on updating the Kerberos documentation in
the Handbook? if so, I'd like to help. If not, I'm hoping to find
someone who can get me up to speed on the FreeBSD docbook extensions :-)

Pref for beginner book: Wrox (Holzner) or Ruby for Rails?
I''m a beginner. I''ve done the apple tutorial, Agile ROR (the depot
app, I stopped after that, a little to advanced with no base knowledge
of Ruby), Why''s guide and my copy of Chris Pine''s book today. After
Pine, I''m going to buy either the Wrox book or Ruby for Rails book. I
did a search and there''s not too much on the Wrox book (Holzner)

little sense to set the schg flag (see chflags(1)) on every system

Kerberos to file server
Howdy,
I may be approaching this problem entirely wrong, or not. Was hoping for a
little guidance one way or the other.
I've got this AS/400 with gobs of unused file storage on it that I want to
share across as a file server to a FreeBSD box. The AS/400 side of things
supports NFS and kinda pretends to be a Unix like machine in this role.
Users will be booting from diskless clients

IPSec VPNs: to gif or not to gif
I will shortly be replacing a couple of proprietary VPN boxes
with a FreeBSD solution. Section 10.10 of the Handbook has a
detailed description of how to do this.
However I remember a lot of discussion about a year ago about
whether the gif interface was necessary to set up VPNs like
this or whether it was just a convenience, for "getting the
routing right". A number of people said

Installing FreeBSD-Stable and Upgrading to FreeBSD-Stable
I am a newbie trying to get the most current Stable version of FreeBSD
running. I have been using CVS to update my system, but things don't work
after an update. For example KDE 3.1 (from KDE 3.0) doesn't start using
startkde.
I am looking for instructions on the best way to Install the lastest
version of FreeBSD-Stable and how to Upgrade the system in the future.
Thanks.

Bandwidth ? + Doc + cdr
Hi,
How much bandwidth do I need for 1 conversation ?
I know it depends on the codecs, in X-lite I can see a codec called gsm, and
the grandstream aha analog/ip converter have a codec called 721.
Doc. I have found the asterisk handbook, but only a draft from marts 2003

Asterisk@Home 1.1b1 has been released
We have replaced the simple contact management system
in Asterisk@Home with SugarCRM a full CRM system. This
might seem like over kill for a home PBX but Sugar has
the best contact management we have seen. With click
to dial functionality and the ability to import data
from other contact managers it’s a great fit for
Asterisk@Home.
We have also added new version of the usual Asterisk

[Kerberos] Error at Handbook?
Hi!
I'm quite new to the list, but searching the archive and PRs didn't
show me anything on the matter.
According to FreeBSD Handbook (14.8.2 Setting up a Heimdal KDC) one
should config DNS server by adding:
-----
_kerberos IN TXT EXAMPLE.ORG.
-----
This doesn't work. DNS servers returns: text = "EXAMPLE.ORG.".
This is right, because RFC 1035 allows up to

Placing Asterisk between existing PBX and PSTN
Hi,
I've read through the Asterisk handbook and I'd just like clarification
from someone that's implemented the above before. Lets imagine I want to
use the CallingCard application and don't want to tell a client to buy a
channelbank (the analog extensions are too many to connect to FXS cards),
I figure I could set them up as below:

If you had just one book on R to buy...
Hi,
I am starting a new job as a study analyst for a social science
research unit. I would really like to use R as my main tool for data
manipulation and analysis. So I'd like to ask you, if you had just one
book on R to buy (or to keep), which one would it be ? I already
bought the Handbook of Statistical Analysis Using R, but I'd like to
have something more complete, both on the

freebsd vpn server behind nat dsl router
Hello Greg,
I am writing you, because I saw your responses to a couple of messages on
the freebsd-security mailing list related to freebsd vpn and nat.
My situations is rather unique, and I am needing an expert's eyes to
glance at it and confirm whether it is doable or not. I have a simple
diagram that illustrates what I am trying to do, and it is located here

Problems with a new box of asterisk@home 1.3
Hello, I've recently installed Asterisk@home, i'm following step by step the "new user guide" but I cannot get my X-Lite SIP phone see my asterisk@home proxy...
I've installed in a viertual machine (vmware) and there's some problems with the Zaptel service and I think that this is why I cannot connect.
Thanks in advance.
