R and vim (gvim) on ubuntu
Dear all -
I do fret this to be a revealing beginner question - fortunately, this
mailing list have been good to me in the paste .-)
I am looking for a good R editor/environment in ubuntu. To that end, I have
decided to dive into gvim as the modality offered here seems to make sense
for editing.
I want to use Johannes Ranke's vim r-plugin, but I can't make it work.
I have the plugin

sendmail refusing incoming connections from outside
Hello.
I am scratching my head about sendmail for a simple thing:
I have a CentOS 4 box on which I would like to receive e-mails.
when I type 'telnet localhost 25' I can connect successfully to the sendmail
service.
Now if I type: 'telnet 192.168.0.30 25' on the same host the connection is
refused.
It also refuses connections from another host.

short read while checking ext3 journal
My UPS failed and my server took an 'unscheduled outage' a few weeks ago.
The only casualty appears to be a volume I used for backup. I usually
maintain data on multiple hard disks, but in this case I errantly had some
data (of marginal value) on this file system.
At this point, the data is not worth enough for me to send the drive out
for data recovery, but it's worth enough to

Ext3 filesystem modified while mounted read-only
I noticed that ext3 filesystems are modified if mounted read-only:
# mke2fs -j /dev/hdb1
[...]
# md5sum /dev/hdb1 > MD5SUM
# mount -t ext3 -o ro /dev/hdb1 /mnt/test1
# umount /mnt/test1
# md5sum -c MD5SUM
md5sum: MD5 check failed for '/dev/hdb1'
On examination of a block-for-block copy of 'before' and 'after' images
with od and diff, I believe that the changes are

Announcing EXT2FS lib for syslinux
Here is the initial release:
git://github.com/donhiatt/Syslinux-EXT2FS-Library-port.git
I am very new to git so I hope I managed to get the repo setup properly.
The repo is branched from 'disklib' as I plan to use it for all disk
read/write access (I'm currently using modified gpllib/disk/* -- see
README).
Cheers,

binary RPMs
Hi everybody.
I know that we can normally install source rpms designed for RH9 and FC1,
but can we also install the binary RPMs for RH9 and/or FC1 on a CentOS 3
system ?

recover data from linear raid
Hello,
I had a scientific linux 3.0.4 system (rhel compatible), with 3
ide disks, one for / and two others in linear raid (250 gb and 300 gb
each).
This system was obsoleted so i move the raid disks to a new
scientific linux 3.0.7 installation. However, the raid array was not
detected ( I put the disks on the same channels and same master/lsave
setup as in the previous setup). In fact

CentOS 4 post installation of all packages
Hello.
I have installed CentOS 4 on a server in a hosting company and I realise
that not all packages have been installed.
I would like to install all packages exactly like it is when we click on
'install everything' from the CentOS 4 installation.
Is there a way of doing so with 'yum install' something ? My goal is to have
the exact replicate as the default CentOS 4

Hi there,
I am using tar to backup the whole system (specific directorues usr, lib, sbin, etc, var, home, root).
On bare metal recovery I install the minimal portion of the syetm and then I throw the tarballs.
Any opinions?

Domain=[HOME-NETWORK] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.14a-2]
Trying unsuccessfully to mount the dir that's on hdb1 on another Fedora

identical. Just refuses to mount hdb1. Here

another yum question
Hello centos community,
I have a personal repository with self-made RPMs, and i need to include
this repository to yum.conf. But i've noticed that yum configuration is
overwritten when yum is updated. I can't update yum.conf manually on
my servers each time yum is updated ...
Is anyone have an idea ?
Thank you.

centos-yumconf purpose
Hello.
I did try to find out some information about centos-yumconf, but I didn't
find any.
I would like to know what centos-yumconf rpm is made for and what it does
(just overwrite the yum.conf file, or copy things from the original and
create a new one ?).
I dont' really understand the necessity of this package, because I thought
that the version upgrade was made through the $releasever

ext3 + external journal -- Howto..
I am new to ext3 + external journal. Is there any howto I can look at?
this is what I understand
1. mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/md5
2. mke2fs -J device=/dev/md5 /dev/md0
3. mount /dev/md0 / -t ext3 ( hmm.. what do I need to put on fstab?? )
/dev/md5 is a two drive RAID 1 partition
/dev/md0 is a 4 drive RAID 5 partition.

Can't access shares from Win98 machine
Hello all. I have recently set up Samba on my Rehdat 9 machine. I have
on my home network 2 computers, one running Redhat 9 (with Samba as
mentioned), and the other running Windows 98 2nd ed. My RH machine can
read and access shared directories on the Win98 machine just fine. My
Windows machine can see my Redhat machine on the smb, but cannot access
the shares. In other words, when I go to

Promise raid cards
Hello.
I would like to know if promise RAID cards are compatible with CentOS / RHEL
?
I have seen that only SATA is supported on the RHEL hardware compatibility
list. The other ATA raid cards seems not to be compatible. They give source
code and promise grants compatibility with RedHat 8 and 9 but not RHEL.
I would like to know if somebody tried a ATA raid card like Fasttrack

Hello.
I have setup samba 3.0.10-1 on my Centos 4 system. I have setup samba to
make a share of a FAT32 filesystem. When I want to write to this shared

get the following error: 'access denied'.
This happens as soon as I try to copy a hidden file or directory to this

Maybe this question is a little stupid, but please help me. I am a newbie

When I tried to create a new domain "domain 1", I followed the Yan-Ching

But when I do "xc_dom_create.py -Dvmid=1", Xen seems to start to boot with

bash file direct execution
Hi all.
I have a little strange problem.
I created a file called 'test.sh' in the root directory containing:
#!/bin/sh
echo test
When I execute it with '/test.sh' there is no output.
When I source it by executing it with '. /test.sh' the output comes ok.
When I move it to '/root' and execute it with '/root/test.sh' then it works
perfectly.
When I move it
