system management - what do you use to manage your CentOS systems?
Greetings everyone.
Let me preface this with the following, I know this is not specific to
CentOS but I do value the input given by *many* of the users on this
list.
I can not think of a more appropriate place to ask these questions.
Let me just break down my setup:
20 CentOS 4 servers, all running apache.
The only things that are unique on each server are the network
settings and the apache

Here is the output from yum -y upgrade without the error parts...
Its odd because it updated all of these first time round. I have dared

adding user ldif to ldap
hi list.. I am trying to add an ldif with my users that I have derived
from /etc/passwd. for some reason ldapadd is choking on the first
entry... I've also tried removing the first one and predictably each
one fails in exactly the same way...may I ask how best to correct
this?
Here is the error:
LDAP# ldapadd -x -D "cn=Manager,dc=summitnjhome,dc=com" -W -f /tmp/passwd.ldif

Re: installation error
Thank you,
The apt was set to look in the wheezy instead of the jessie one.

Priv Sep SSH has / as CWD

Hi,
This may or may not be a bug. However, it is DEFINITELY NOT how I would
expect and want to see sshd work!
If you run lsof against sshd on a privilege separated user, it shows
that sshd's CWD is /. I would hope that the CWD would be at a minimum
/var/empty/sshd and I would really have thought it would be something
along the lines of

Die, KDE! Die! (Sticking with Gnome and Yum Conflicts)
Okay, I experimented with both KDE and Gnome, and decided I'd rather use
Gnome. After making this decision, I wanted to remove KDE, because I
like to keep my hard drive as lean as possible.
I accomplished this, or so I thought, by running:
# yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)".
It seemed to work. Removed a whole bunch 'o stuff.
Okay, but then I wanted to install k3B,

That doesn't work with a fresh install of 4.2 (from the Linux Magazine cover

How to enable SHA1 passwords after migration from OpenSUSE?
Hi there!
I have recently migrated my old server from OpenSUSE 10.0 to CentOS 5.
Almost everything works great, except for one thing - user passwords.
In the old system they were in a form:
root:$2a$05$9V.P3/KV2fd0r/O8hs0gNueaidF35edj3DL6skb32qZJNpvwVHiUO:12183:0:99999:7:::
and that format doesn't seem to be understood by CentOS. When I change
the password I get something like:

Help Getting Postfix relaying via Gmail
Hi,
I am trying to get a CentOS 6 system relaying mail via my G-Mail account.
I followed the instructions found at
https://www.zulius.com/how-to/set-up-postfix-with-a-remote-smtp-relay-host/but
there seems to be a problem with authentication. I have done some
research but still can't get this working. Any suggestions ? It seems the
user and password are correct.

Transient permission denied errors when sending audit logs
Hi,
In kubevirt we are running into a strange permission problem on
libvirt-5.0. We see transient "Permission Denied" errors when "virAuditSend"
wants to send an audit log. [1] shows the logs of one of these containers.
Here an example:

alternatives for hooking dlopen() without LD_LIBRARY_PATH or LD_AUDIT?
I've got a situation where I need to hook a dlopen() made by VDDK, a
proprietary library, where it passes a relative name expecting to
resolve to a copy of several libraries, including libstdc++.so, that it
installs alongside itself, and fails to load if that resolves to the
system libstdc++.so. The simplest solution of providing LD_LIBRARY_PATH
is enough to load VDDK, but then poisons
