Restoring data from disk w/ messed up partition tables
I had the electricity go out the other day. When my Centos 4.3 workstation came up, I said yes when it got to the prompt "Unclean shutdown, force filesystem check?" prompt. It ground away for awhile and then said something about a bad superblock. Yikes! I thought, that's a bad sign. After a reboot, I got nothing but a grub> prompt. I tried booting into rescue mode using the

Backup FAQ: PLEEZE include in FAQ?
I know there are a million ways to skin a cat, but we must have 1,000,001 discussed in the archives already. I guess folks don't know about "search". So, I'm hoping that the pending FAQ might have mention of one or more of the *excellent* threads resident in the archives regarding backup? And just so this post is not a total waste, I'll mention that cpio can be your friend

ifelse and dates do not work together: What workaround?
I encountered the above problem. I went to the help files and discovered the reason why. My insight as to why it was happening did not immediately provide me with a solution by which I could accomplish what I needed to do. I turned to the help archive. I encountered a thread on which somebody pointed this problem out and was mildly castigated for not having looked at the help file. Alas no

Any pointers for multiple subnets?
Hi, I am trying to have some routing done between two subnets. One is 192.168.1.0/24 and has my LAN computers running a mix of Windows 98/XP clients. There are two linux machines on this network running Samba. Another is 192.168.0.0/24 and has the other LAN. Only my linux machines have two NICs, one for each LAN. I am trying out one of these linux machines to be the gateway for both the

served by the Type Reference and Function Reference documents, and found the Language Tutorial to be a handy introduction. If I were to ask for more, it would be a Language Reference, and a comprehensive index, because I find search tools generally lacking. Lame update from Dag's repo fails for me, any help?
Trying yum update for the latest announcements. Part of the problem I experienced last week appears again: lame library DSA key is unavailable. I had tried to resolve this last week, to no avail. Tried again this week and found a French site with the key ID, but for libmad. Anyone can give me the proper instructions so this works? TIA Bill Here is a snipped part of the yum log.

Got three emails from Brian Trudeau <brian.trudeau at eastek-intl.com> to my mbox address saying With a subject of re: xxx-xxxxxxxx-xxxx Re: [CentOS] How to add System V to CentOS? If Trying to Recover a Damaged Partition: kbs-CentOS-Extras Has a Tool
Recently (and for ages, I'm sure) folks have suffered partition destruction and had to try and recover. In the recent thread, the victim eventually had to resort to Google and fond some package that I can not remember now. Well, I was perusing my YumInfo.lst.05, for general info, and I discovered this (potential) little gem. Thought I would pass it on and make it "more googleable"

RPM: any better way to reinstall only certain files?
My former primary boot disk had some bad spots appear awhile back. Damage, per rpm --verify, seems to be predominately in loss of reference files in /usr/share/doc and such as that. Being the type that wastes my own time before wasting that of others, I did a semi-careful perusal of the rpm man pages. Thought the --files or some such might offer a way ought. IIUC, nope! Seems that I can't

Xen with Centos 4.3 - pointers?
Howdy, I'd like to play with Xen on top of a Centos 4.3 installation. I've been googling, but haven't found a nice comprehensive set of notes to get me started. I've looked at the XenSource site, a wiki site that tells you how to get CentOS working in a Xen shell (or whatever it's called). So, for a Xen newbie, does anyone have have any pointeds to notes, documentation,

Detecting second network interface
Me again. The ASUS P5N32-SLI motherboard in my new machine has dual NICs but CentOS has only detected one of them. I've tried rebooting with the network plugged in only to the second one, but kudzu still doesn't find it. Any suggestions?

Alternative architecture CentOS 3 builds?
Hi there. Although RHEL 3 is available for several different architectures, CentOS appears to only be available for the i386 architecture. Are alternative architecture rebuilds outside the scope of the CentOS project, or is there some other specific reason for that? If one wanted to rebuild CentOS for, let's say the AMD64 architecture, would that be a difficult process, or is it just

Signing key for recent x86_64 CentOS-3 updates
(reposting 'cause I sent the last one from a non-subscribed address) Hi there. I tried "yum update"ing my x86_64 CentOS-3 box today, but the packages won't install and yum claims I don't have an appropriate signing key. I've been happily doing updates all along (last time was Oct. 12) with no trouble. The key ID used to sign the x86_64 packages is 219180cddb42a60e

Query on package to use for investment quotes
Hi all, Diverging from my research based number crunching I am interested to see what, if any R packages are out there that can access daily market values of investment funds (e.g. using http://quote.morningstar.com/fund/f.aspx?t=PDMIX) then store the data value (i.e. NAV =$11.56 ) with date retrieved so these can be plotted with ggplot2 on some regular basis. A web search turned up a

Reducing the deleterious effects of ego related issues on the list: growing up individually.
Folks, I *suggest* that little or no reply to this is warranted. It's just the statements of an old fart trying to make a (slightly) better environment for all of us. These thoughts are offered for consideration and use as you see fit. For some, "Hey, that'll work for me too" is the hoped for result. No discussion is intended or warranted, IMO.
