Bug in find command?
I'm going to bugz this if no one tells me I made another brain-damaged
error here. Also, if I can get one confirmation, it'll let me breath
easier. I ran a version searching for ".cmd" and ".c" just trying to
convince myself I'm not *that* brain-damaged.
You'd think after all these years that regex compilation would be pretty
darn stable... Oh! Forgot it was

Problems after performing yum update
I performed the update yesterday that included installing kernel
2.6.9-42.0.2.EL and replacing ethereal with wireshark.
First, the trivial...
Wireshark would not run from the KDE menu without editing the menu to
change the command from "wireshark" to "kdesu wireshark" because dumpcap
is at usr/sbin/dumpcap instead of /usr/bin/dumpcap . Making the change
causes wireshark to

compaq v2000 working with correct boot options and compaq r4000 still SLOWWW
Hi,
I have a v2000 compaq laptop. The realtek network and USB on this
machine was not working. After adding to grub.conf
"acpi=off apci=off noacpi noapic"
the v2000 realtek started working and the USB worked fine... Fantastic!
So I thought I would try those same options on my r4000 laptop.
they had no effect.... This AMD turion 64 4000+ rating laptop is still
running SLOWWW...

CentOS 4.5, kernel-2.6.9-55, NTPD trouble
Following the update this morning, NTP is failing with the same symptoms
that I saw several years ago (pre-CentOS, I believe) when Anaconda
mistakenly blessed my ASUS A7N8X, Athlon (CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+
stepping 00) based system with an SMP kernel. The symptom is that NTPD
never establishes sync with a server, showing over the top jitter values.

Vista performance (uggh)
Issue: Vista reads slowly from a samba server. This appears to pop up
periodically here and elsewhere.
My samba.conf file has:

vfs objects = readahead
As suggested elsewhere.
Writes are approximately 17-18MB/s which is acceptable. Reads are in
the 8MB/s range which is appalingly slow. Using linux smbclient and
windows XP clients I can read at 25+MB/s. I've enabled vfs

CentOS5 consistent media check failures 2 - 6.
Folks,
As much as I hate to, I feel I need to post my long story and ask help.
Shortly after the release announcement, I kicked off rtorrent and
downloaded the CD and DVD images. Since my cable provider does my
"throttling", I disabled throttling and shared for several days,
"returning" several GBs at no objectionable loss I could discern.
While that was going on, I used

[sorta offtopic] Removing bad bytes from filenames
I'm moving my Ogg Vorbis collection off of my Linux server and onto my
laptop. I plan on using iTunes to play my collection, but, that's a
whole 'nother can of worms.
I'm having trouble moving my complete collection over because dbPowerAmp
(an application I used to love) made some dumb decisions about naming my
files. For example, in track/album/artist names that contained a

compaq R4000 update (hogging interrupts)
After a couple hours last night....
doing a "killall -SIGUSR1 cpuspeed" bumps up the /proc/cpuinfo
information for cpu mhz to 2393 Mhz. I did notice a little increase
after that. However, the machine is still sluggish.
I did a "hdparm -c 1 /dev/hda" but really did not notice any difference.
I tried to download fglrx64_6_8_0_8.16.20-1.x86_64.rpm from ati
(also 8.20.8) and get
