If I 'startx' then switch to a console (using CTRL+ALT+F*) and then back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7), 1/2 the time it comes back, the other half I get a black screen and I can never recover the session. I've had a long-standing problem syncing my home directory from one Linux system (RH Linux 7.3) to another (RH Linux 9). I am now running rsync version 2.6.2 on both ends.
