Aggregate, max and time of max
All,
For data consisting of serial measurements on subjects, one may use the
aggregate function to say compute the peak response for each subject for
each design condition. Is there a way to alter this or another one-liner to
also retain the time at which the peak occurred and thus avoid writing a
doing this via a loop? I suppose one could attempt to employ the split
function but that's

group mean, minus each row's value
I used the following to assign each row the group average, where w is
the new group average variable, x is the variabale to be averaged, and
g is the nominal group indicator:
w <- ave(x,g)
Now I want to calculate the group average, but WITHOUT each row's
value of x. Is there an easy way to do this? I'm sure I'm missing
something obvious here, but for the life of me I can't

pdf function, resize xyplot plot automatically
All,
When saving plots to a pdf file via the pdf function, I would like to be
able to automatically expand the graphics device to achieve the same result
as when one does this manually (e.g., clicking the green expand button on
the upper left of the graph on Mac OS). Consider simple example below:
library("lattice")
foo.frm = data.frame(Subject = rep(c(1:4), each = 9), Y =

Any Amiga Samba users?
I'm thinking of using Samba to allow my laptop 486 to access the
CDrom, internet link and large hard disks in my Amiga. Does
anyone know if this would be easy to do, and if it's possible to get
Samba running using Miami?
cheers, Evan.

how to recode with an if-type statement
I'm sure this is easy, but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to
recode some data in R.
I have a variable "numpeers" which is valued 1, 2, or 3. I also have
three other variables called "w9zd9_1," "w9zd9_2," and "w9zd9_3." I
want to use these variables to create a new item called "distot."
Specifically, here is what I want to do:

how to assign a group mean to individual cases?
I need advice on how to create a variable that is the group mean of
another variable.
For example, I have a variable called x for which each row in the data
set has a value. I also have a nominal variable called g that
indicates which of 100 different groups each row belongs to.
So, I want to create a new variable called w, which is the group mean
of x for which ever group the row belongs to (as

1.0rc25: double INBOX folder (weird)
Let me start off by saying the initial cause was *not* a Dovecot bug. :)
If you have the default namespace "INBOX." (Courier emulation mode from
the Wiki) and an actual folder in your ~/Maildir/ with INBOX in the name
(~/Maildir/.INBOX.Miami), then Dovecot presents them both to the client
as the real Inbox in Thunderbird:

bandwith issues, ISP hosting services, etc
I am looking into supporting around 20 SIP clients (ATAs, IP softphones, etc) distributed in around 10 different end points (in South America). For the most part they all have narrow band connections 64kpbs, 128 at most and I?d like to use g729 all around (don?t have too many alternatives)
To start with, I will have one * with no gateway to the PSTN and eventually a few * boxes with termination

[Fwd: RE: maximum likelihood problem]
I forgot to add that I first gave a starting value for K.
Nonlinear least squares won't work because my errors are not normally
distributed.
Any advide on my maximum likelihood function would be greatly appreciated.

diagonal matrices
Hello all,
I have matrices V.i of dimension n.i x n.i, where i = 1, ..., J, and the sum of n.i equals N. (and n.i ! = n.j)
goal: create one large matrix V, where V has matrices V.i on diagonal.
I create each matrix V.i in a for loop (1 to J), so each time I'd like to augment V with the
most recently calculated V.i, such that I'll have V after the final iteration of the for loop.

Digium Asterisk World at ITEXPO - Yahoo keynote update
I don't know how many of you are going to be at ITEXPO/Digium Asterisk
World in Miami next week - I hope to see as many of you as possible,
though.
There has been an interesting change in the line-up for the show, that
I think bears mentioning here since it possibly will help quite a few
of you in your discussions about getting Asterisk into your company.
We've had the good

Symbolic math?
Hi Folks,
I am using Windows 2000 and was wondering what (Open Source) software R
users use or might recommend for symbolic computations (aside from the ol'
noggin, e.g., Maxima, Mathomatic) .
Thanks,
Hank

wildcards and removing variables
All,
Is there are a wildcard in R for varible names as in unix? For example,
rm(results*)
to remove all variable or function names that begin w/ "results"?

workspace question
All,
When starting R, how does one prevent the loading the previous
workspace which was saved? I'd like to start a new project
and save the new image in a different directory, but I'd like to
partition this from the old project. Does there exist a better
way than just deleting the files associated w/ the old project
manually? I looked in the Intro to R manual and searched for

numeric operations w/ lists
Hello all,
X is a list of 20 lists, and each individual list has 65 elements.
Y is a list of 65 elements.
WANT: subtract Y from each of the 20 lists in X.
Here's what I tried and the error messages:
> X - rep(Y, 20)
Error in X - rep(Y 20) : non-numeric argument to binary operator
I tried several methods w/o success. Any suggestions kindly
appreciated.

No of Calls
Hi
sorry for asking the same question again:
here is my details:
I've 50 exten in my sip and I'm using snom300 to my asterisk box this
asterisk box is connected to another asterisk box using IAX trunk over 1MB
full duplex line. I'm using g729 as the preffered codec. Can you please tell
me how many calls can go at the same time without causing the any type of
problem.

save to ascii
All,
Usually when I save a variable I have ascii = FALSE since I usually
load the variable via the load(variable) command and do not need to
view the variable outside of R.
When I set ascii = TRUE and view the variable outside of R in a text editor,
I notice additional characters (starting w/ RDA2 ...) before the first actual value
in the vector.
Is there are way to save to ascii such that this

Covariance/Correlation matrix for repeated measures data frame
All,
I have a repeated measures data frame and was wondering if the
covariance matrix can be
calculated via some created indexing or built-in R function.
Specifically, say there are 3 variables, where potassium concentration
is measured 6 times on each patient.
Patient number (discrete)
Time (1 to 6, discrete)
Potassium (continuous variable)
I want the covariance/correlation matrix for the
