UP vs SMP kernel ?
There was a discussion here several days ago that was precipitated by my decision to manually install the new kernel before YUMming the upgrade to CentOS 4.2. The upgrade went south but I recovered by doing a fresh install and a bunch of copying from backups. All's well EXCEPT that I'm back in the same "box", thanks to anaconda. I set out to upgrade kernels this morning:

smbd/oplock.c:oplock_timeout_handler(375) after samba upgrade
I recently upgraded from samba 3.0.10-1.fc3 to 3.0.21b-2 running on FC5. Today was the first day of a typing class which uses the network version of Mavis Beacon Typing which depends on file sharing. The users are hanging and then getting an error message during logging into the product. In /var/log/message, I can see the following message for each user similar to: [2006/04/24

HD Partition Lost??
Help! I am running FC1, with a maxtor 160GB HD installed. Drive is only about a month old. I had just finished moving data from an older HD that was making some funny sounds and throwing some random errors. All was well. Last night we lost power for several hours and 1 machine's UPS/shutdown system didn't power down the workstation. The other 7 in our office did fine. The power

I have a centos 4.4 drive with two partitions on it, one an hd*1 partition former /boot ext3 partition, which i can read fine, but which doesn't have the data i want. I've got some data on an lvm volume /dev/hd*2

CentOS 4.5, kernel-2.6.9-55, NTPD trouble
Following the update this morning, NTP is failing with the same symptoms that I saw several years ago (pre-CentOS, I believe) when Anaconda mistakenly blessed my ASUS A7N8X, Athlon (CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+ stepping 00) based system with an SMP kernel. The symptom is that NTPD never establishes sync with a server, showing over the top jitter values. [root at mavis log]# uname -r

New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 but not centos4.2?
>From a login on a machine with rhel4u2 I can execute the following commands and get the indicated output: date --date="Mar 25 15:00:00 UTC 2006" Sat Mar 25 10:00:00 EST 2006 date --date="Mar 25 15:00:00 UTC 2007" Sun Mar 25 11:00:00 EDT 2007 As you can see, the output differs for 2006 and 2007. That indicates that rhel4u2 includes changes required by the

X won't start
This machine is running CentOS 5.3, fully updated Linux mavis.localdomain 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 #1 SMP Wed Apr 1 09:19:18 EDT 2009 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux. Video is an ATI Radeon 9000. X froze overnight and attempts to restart it fail. I tried an old kernel (2.6.18-92.1.22.el5) before realizing that root can start X and a virgin user can start X. I still can't use my original user name.

Announcing EXT2FS lib for syslinux
Here is the initial release: git://github.com/donhiatt/Syslinux-EXT2FS-Library-port.git I am very new to git so I hope I managed to get the repo setup properly. The repo is branched from 'disklib' as I plan to use it for all disk read/write access (I'm currently using modified gpllib/disk/* -- see README). Cheers, don ----- README for ext2fs module. * Description -----------

Ext3 filesystem modified while mounted read-only
I noticed that ext3 filesystems are modified if mounted read-only: # mke2fs -j /dev/hdb1 [...] # md5sum /dev/hdb1 > MD5SUM # mount -t ext3 -o ro /dev/hdb1 /mnt/test1 # umount /mnt/test1 # md5sum -c MD5SUM md5sum: MD5 check failed for '/dev/hdb1' On examination of a block-for-block copy of 'before' and 'after' images with od and diff, I believe that the changes are

Confused about loading other packages from a package
In my package, I create a new method for plot with the following signature: setMethod("plot", signature(x="marrayNorm", y="formula"), plot.ma) where marrayNorm is a class defined in the marray package. After building and installing my package, I get the following warnings when I load my package (with library(maVis)): Warning messages: 1: In the method signature

short read while checking ext3 journal
My UPS failed and my server took an 'unscheduled outage' a few weeks ago. The only casualty appears to be a volume I used for backup. I usually maintain data on multiple hard disks, but in this case I errantly had some data (of marginal value) on this file system. At this point, the data is not worth enough for me to send the drive out for data recovery, but it's worth enough to

Can't mount dir on hdb1
Hi All, Running Samba on a Fedora 4 machine in a mixed home environment. Domain=[HOME-NETWORK] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.14a-2] Trying unsuccessfully to mount the dir that's on hdb1 on another Fedora 4 machine. Can mount any dir from hda just fine. Only problem is the one on hdb1. File permissions and everything else I can think of checking is identical. Just refuses to mount hdb1. Here

System Recovery
I hosed my main desktop pretty badly a couple days ago, have reconciled myself to bad news and would appreciate some advice. (CentOS 5.3 fully updated but now backed down from kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 to 2.6.18-128.4.1.el5 just to try that.) The whole debacle began when I was investigating my formerly-weekly backup script to run to completion. The backup is kept on an external

[PATCH] Remove device information when VmError occurred
Hi, I tested xm block-attach command with a wrong parameter(file:). Naturally a command error occurred. Then I retested xm block-attach command with a correct parameter(phy:). But a command error occurred again. The second command error occurred because Xend did not remove device information from self.info when the first command error occurred. # xm block-attach vm1 file:/dev/hda4 hdb1 w

HPLIP
First, has anyone successfully installed the HPLIP driver from HP in CentOS4? Second, does that driver really provide the toolbox which includes handy stuff like ink level monitoring? I got the source RPM (hplip-0.9.4-1.1.src.rpm) from an FC4 testing mirror, which rebuilt fine on this machine: . . . + umask 022 + cd /home/rj/rpmbuild/BUILD + cd

Mavis Beacon crashes with page fault
Hi wine users, I am using wine 0.9.3 on Mandrake 9.2. I've just installed wine from tar.bz2 and Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 12 Standard; the installation went fine and I'm able to run the program. I have two problems: 1. The application hard-crashes my machine when running in full-screen mode, since the app changes the screen resolution to 640x480. I had to reboot my computer so I
