The best way to protect against starvation?
Hello,
If an ordinary user runs:
-- snip --
cat > starv.c <<EOF
main(){ char *point; while(1) { point = ( char * ) malloc(10000); }}
EOF
cc starv.c
while true
do
./a.out &
done
-- snip --
This will fast starv the operating system (FreeBSD 6.2). I have tried to
limit the number of processes and the amount of memmory consumed (in
login.conf).
There is also a file /etc/malloc.conf

InstantRails with Ruby One-Click Installer?
Hi. I would like to hear how/what other users are installing for
development and reference support. I currently have both InstantRails
and the Ruby One-click Installer installed. I don''t like telling
co-workers to install both (the OCI has lots of nice documentation
useful to Rails developers). Also, the Ruby OCI helps when needing to
run Ruby scripts outside of the InstantRails

Solution for autospec not working
Hello,
I have noticed that, since version 1.1.4, autotest/autospec does not run any
of my specs. After getting a hint from
http://b.logi.cx/2008/10/9/non-auto-spec, I dove a bit deeper into the code
and found that spec is no longer being run by ruby.
I monkey-patched Autotest::Rspec in my .autotest file so that spec is again
executed (using code taken from version 1.1.4). autospec is now

returning images from Mongrel
I''ve been able to use Mongrel''s native API to serve up files using:
response.start do |head, out|
head[''Content-Type''] = resource.content_type
out.write( resource.content )
end
This has worked well, until I attempted to serve up images.
resource.content seems to be the problem. Usually it returns the text of
the page. When resource.content returns an

Limit number of connections per user?
I'm working from modified 5.0p1 codebase.
What I'm looking for is a mechanism to limit the number of simultaneous
connections on a per-user/IP basis.
That is, disallow multiple simultaneous logins/authentication of the
same user from different IP addresses.
e.g.:
fred from 10.1.1.1 - accept
fred from 10.1.1.2 -- reject while fred is still connected from 10.1.1.1
fred from 10.1.1.1 - OK

DTrace IP provider, step 1
G''Day All,
I''m putting together a PSARC case to begin integration of the DTrace network
providers. I''ve drawn up a rough plan which splits this project into over a
dozen smaller steps, as documented on the network provider page:

hardware crypto and SSL?
Is anyone successfully using some sort of hardware crypto solution to
combat the overhead of SSL in http transactions? I'd love to hear
anything good or bad about this.

please decrypt your manuals
I. most of ssh manual and all sshd manual present server and client as one machine, called host. All files mentioned are placed on one machine. This is incorrect, and makes the explanation unclear. For example, man sshd SSH_KNOWN_HOSTS FILE FORMAT suggests to copy keys from /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key.pub into /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts, as if those files are on the same machine.

Update on "non-dying" nx connections over unreliable network
Dear Sirs & Madams:
Thank you so much for your help. To remind, my situation is a wireless connection that is unreliable, where:
(a) upon disconnect, !M's nxclient does not recognize connection death
(b) after I manually kill nxssh and reconnect, reconnection takes some time.
My idea:
intercept myself in between NX client and server - detect connection drop, and reconnect. This is

It is simple to set up a rsyncd server under Cygwin / WinX to feed
BackupPC. I normally install "full" cygwin to access rsyncd, but there
is a limited client available.

Danish callerid on a x100p card
Hi
I've got a cheap card from x100p.com for my pots line. I haven't found a
definate answer if it is possible to get danish(DTMF without signaling
before it). I have had a look at bug #9 but that is
written longtime ago.
I am running zaptel 1.4.7 and asterisk 1.4.14 BRIstuffed 0.4.0-test4 both
from the xorcom debian packages. I believe they should contain some kind
functionality for DTMF
