Problems with UsePrivilegeSeparation (was: port fwd as user != root?
I just upgraded to OpenSSH3.2.3p1 as it seemed that
UsePrivilegeSeparation yes
might help with my problem (connections forwarded
are owned by root instead of the user I logged in as
on the server), but instead, sshd barfs on receiving
a connection. Without UsePrivilegeSeparation
the server works fine.

3.3p1 on Immunix (RH) 6.2
Just compiled the SRPM for 3.3p1 on my Immunix 6.2 box (Redhat 6.2 +
Stackguard compiler), fired up the server, and tried to connect to it.
No joy.
In the spec file I changed the following options:
# Is this build for RHL 6.x?
%define build6x 1
# Disable IPv6 (avoids DNS hangs on some glibc versions)
%define noip6 1
This appears in the system log:

some_host$ ssh -R 20022:my_other_host:22 user at my_host
when I tried to connect to forwarded port from another computer, like this:
some_host$ ssh -p 20022 my_host
i got the message:
Connection refused.
When I tried to conect from the host my_host where the port was forwarded from
like this:
my_host$ ssh -p 20022 localhost
it worked O.K. When I did it from the same my_host like this:

openssh-3.3p1 and SPARC
Hi;
I just attempted to install openssh-3.3p1 on a Sparc box running
linux kernel 2.2.14-5.0 However any attempt to connect to the
daemon causes a crash. (See below)
Given the current security issue, will there be an available option
for running the up coming 3.4 release on a Linux 2.2 kernel?

yes, your system is too slow, and can not keep up with the sound card
input. are you running darkice as root? what is the system load when you
run darkice or liveice?

[Bug 205] PrivSep needs to be a compile-time option
http://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205
------- Additional Comments From mouring at eviladmin.org 2002-04-07 10:28 -------
Created an attachment (id=64)
This patch (does not include configure.ac patch) should allow non-mmap platforms to compile, but will not allow them to use privsep period. One has to do more R&D to figure out where to disable compression on sshd since

[Bug 259] UsePrivilegeSeparation crashed sshd under Linux 2.2

Linux 2.2 defines MAP_ANON in <bits/mman.h>, however it can seen in
/usr/src/linux/mm/mmap.c (lines 200 onwards) that if MAP_ANON is used
then the system call will return -EINVAL.
The following is a quick hack to get openssh to compile on linux 2.2:
