I tried the same work-around on Irix 6.5.15, with both GCC and SGI C compilers. I was able to get it to run and prompt for a password, then it just shut down. Dear developers, I discovered that directories created by scp when recursive copying into a sgid directory do not inherit the sgid bit. I believe this is a bug. A patch to fix this is attached.
