R-beta: a bug in the lm function ?
I ran a function called BoxCox, taken from the book by Venables and
Ripley, for checking the need for power transformation. This function
works fine using the version 0.50 of R, but gives an error message
with version 0.60.
The lm function in version 0.60 is different from that in version 0.50.
Is there a bug in the new lm function?

Linear Discriminant Analysis error: "Variables appear constant"
Hi R experts,
I'm attempting to run Linear Discriminant Analysis using the lda function in the MASS package. I've got around 50 predictor variables and one response variable. My response variable has 5 numeric categories that represent different clusters of fish abundance data (clusters were developed using Bray-Curtis and NMDS), and my predictor variables are environmental variables that

stty and sockets
With local com ports I can use stty to inspect the port settings.
Is there a similiar method with a socket connection?
I have an odd situation happening where my data collection program
that is working on 3 machines is not working on the 4th. The program opens
a socket to remote RS232 device no data is recieved. strangely though if
I "telnet IP port"

openssh kills the stty values?
Hi all,
I found that on some HP-UX 11 machines running openssh-2.3.0p1 the default values for intr in stty don't work. The problem is that stty shows the correct values but they don' work and I cannot det the values to others. Once I connect via telnet or rlogin I can use the intr-sequence.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Stephan

Antw: Re: openssh kills the stty values?
Hi,
thanks for your answer. I can reproduce your error in my HP-UX system and solved it ;-)).
I built socalled software-depots for distributing the openssh-package and put
the start command in the postinstall-script. The shell of this postinstall script has the bahavior
that intr ^C won't work properly. So I did your trick with "/sbin/init.d/sshd stop/start" from a shell where ^C

Openssh + AFS
The native authentication methods of openssh are
(not counting insecure RhostsRSAAuthentication)
1) public key
2) password
For users with home dirs in AFS space, method 1) does not work.
Except with (non foolproof) fiddling on the access controls within
the home directory. This might lead to security issues when done
by inexperienced users.
Without some work, only 2) remains. Being forced to send

password change not working after OS update
Hi,
I have problem with client password chat with Samba (3.0.24) PDC on Suse
after updating OS to service pack 1. The problem prevents client from
changing own password in Windows, plus other things to do with password,
like adding user with Windows User manager. Samba password is to be
synced with unix password in my configuration.

Writing operations to a Samba share fail
Hi,
I have a problem with Samba occasionally starting to fail with any write
operations to a public share. When Samba is started clean, everything
works OK. Then at some stage some users start to experience errors
trying to write into a share. At the same time other users may not
perceive any problems.
smb.conf or any other configurations of the server hasn't been changed

Patches for adding 120 ms encoding
Hi Felica,
yes, this is the only reason to have larger frames is on bandwidth limited links having a gross (physical) bit rates of 10kbps per channel.
Decades ago I calculated with figure (for AMR-NB but the same holds for Opus).

I'm a newb to linux so please be patient. Running CentOS 4. Using
Bash. I'm not sure what happened, but now for some reason /sbin,
/usr/sbin, and /usr/local/sbin are all missing from the path. I am su'd

including:

- many mmap_disable=yes fixes and a few optimizations
- pop3 hang fix
- mbox fix for "last-uid lost" error (hopefully last one)
- mbox fix for losing dirty flag, causing lost message flags
mmap_disable=yes seems to be finally working pretty well. There should
be no more cache file related errors with it enabled.
