Perl version in -STABLE
[bcc: to re@] Considering the amount of changes between 4.x and 5.x, and the performance issues of the latter, I think I can safely predict that RELENG_4 will be around for a long time after the RELENG_5 branch. While I understand that some will resist making RELENG_4 any more useful than it currently is (to encourage users to move to 5.x), I think there is one issue that should be addressed: the

resource leak in ssh1 challenge-response authentication
If an ssh1 client initiates challenge-response authentication but does not submit a response to the challenge, and instead switches to some other authentication method, verify_response() will never run, and the kbdint device context will never be freed. In some cases (such as when the FreeBSD PAM authentication code is being used) this may cause a resource leak leading to a denial of service.

Option to limiting sshd "banner" to interactive/password-auth/tty (or something along those lines) sessions
Hi. It would be of utmost utility if there were a way to cause the sshd "banner" configuration setting to only print the banner in certain circumstances. What I'm actually after is avoiding printing out the banner for non-interactive sessions, so that if I run "ssh somehost ls" I don't get the login banner, but if I just type "ssh somehost" I do (at

PAM merge from FreeBSD
A few things to keep in mind: - kbd-int should call pam_authenticate(), acct_mgmt(), chauthtok(), if required, setcred(PAM_ESTABLISH_CRED) and open_session() ALL during kbd-int so that modules in each of those PAM stacks can prompt the user (pam_open_session(), for example, may prompt a user with an informational message akin to the last login message) - all userauth methods should

\System32\GroupPolicy named pipe?
Hi - I'm using samba to connect some windows boxen to a distributed set of unix machines. I'm trying to unify some of the administrative interfaces via mmc, specifically the group policy stuff. When I try to use the Group Policy snap-in to connect to my samba 2.2.1 servers, I see the windows box do a Tree Connect Andx to ADMIN$\System32\GroupPolicy, and then the samba box responds with

sftp/scp performance testing
Folks, I've noticed poor performance using sftp. If anyone has any advice on how to improve performance, I'd like to hear it. Test simply involved transferring a single 143MB MP3 file using defaults for all the program configs. The opensshd 3.0.2p1 server is used in all tests. Software: openssh suite 3.0.2p1 psftp (putty sftp client) latest dev snapshot pscp (putty scp client) latest

ssh through proxy (was: prng_cmds/init_rng() question/patch)
(Sorry for being so OT, but I'm currently experiencing this inconvenience and want to be more productive than doing a CVS update at home and getting to the office.) So, what you are suggesting is that I setup a squid proxy on a box outside the firewall on port 80 and use MindTerm to connect via that? Until this past weekend when the network was "redone", we had a proxy we could

openssh debian bug?
I spent the last couple of hours trying to figure this out. We upgraded to sshd version OpenSSH_3.8.1p1 Debian and now "password" login no longer works... however keyboard-interactive login still works. the result of this is that while openSSH clients still function, ssh applications like MindTerm do not. here is the debug dump from the login session: Jun 25 21:47:50 m1

Problem with large numbers of bpf devices
A STABLE (not updated since 12/13/02) system shows very strange behavior for devices with a minor mode greater than 256. tcpdump does not work reliably and ls is, uh, "strange", using hex for the minor mode. crw------- 1 root wheel 23, 252 Apr 11 14:29 bpf252 crw------- 1 root wheel 23, 253 Apr 11 14:29 bpf253 crw------- 1 root wheel 23, 254 Apr 11 14:29 bpf254

I am having problem with getting the src from the cvs server for a specific date I read the the man page and it said the date format is : "date=[cc]yy.mm.dd.hh.mm.ss This specifies a date that should be used to select the revi- sions that are checked out from the CVS repository. The client will receive the revisions that were in effect at the specified date and time. At present, the date

PAM merge from FreeBSD
Hi, The attached patch is a merge of Dag-Erling Smorgrav's PAM support for OpenSSH (from FreeBSD). IMO it is a good deal cleaner than the existing PAM code and I'd like to see it imported soon. The code removes the existing PAM password authentication in favor of doing it all via keyboard-interactive. The diff therefore removes the PAMAuthenticationViaKbdInt config item. It also has

FTP tunneling
If people haven't seen it, there's a pretty nice Java SSH client called MindTerm: http://www.mindbright.se/mindterm/ One of the things they did is add some hacks to make FTP tunneling over SSH trivial. This client looks at the data being forwarded over port 21 (ftp control port), and looks for the FTP PORT and PASV commands used to establish

Server overloaded? Or is it a bug?
Hi all! I need your help. My server doesn't respond any more. Everything crashed. How can I find out if this is a bug or it is simply overloaded? I don't have much running, just KDE with about 10 programs on each of the 16 desktops, and a few background processes. This seems much, but I often have much more stuff running, and it is not even slow. It does respond when I ping it, but
