nmap showing lots of ports open that shouldn't be
I have a CentOS 4.2 machine. lokkit shows that a firewall is
enabled, and it is customized to allow SSH, Web, and DNS traffic only.
But if I run nmap against the server IP (from my home machine,
outside the local network) it shows over 1000 open ports. Am I not
understanding nmap, or is there something seriously wrong here?
Here is a small snip of the nmap output (I can include it all if

Trouble redirecting traffic on transparent bridge.
I have posted this question to the netfilter mailing list along with #ebtables, #iptables, and #netfilter. Nobody has really responded, so I''m led to believe
that it is either incredibly complicated or *really* simple. Please, somebody throw me a bone here! Ok, on with the show...
I have a bridge (br0) with two interfaces (eth1 and eth2). Neither br0, eth1, or eth2 have an

tftp-hpa 5.2
Hello everyone,
I am having difficulties in setting up a tftp server on a Fedora 3.14.8-200.fc20.x86_64.
Running tftp client to test the server functionality, a simple get from the terminal prompts 'Transfer timed out.' back.
The version is tftp-hpa 5.2, with remap, with tcpwrappers, unfortunately I am not able to find any log in the system journal.?
The server and related services appear

nmbd memory leak in 2.2.x CVS
I am running 2.2.6 on a customer's site and everything has been perfect.
However I noticed the other day that one of the two nmbd processes (it is a
wins server) had grown to 13Mb over a two week period.
I needed to update to the latest CVS version anyway and had hoped that
something in that might fix things. Five days later and things are looking
the same:
nmbd started on Nov 9th:

[OT] odd network question
I know this is OT, but I'm not sure where else to ask. I can hope for fogiveness! :)
My home router sends its logs to the rsyslog on my desktop system, and
from there I can learn all kinds of interesting (or disturbing) things.
I've written a really horrid shellscript (about 20 things piped together
with a temp file in the middle) to give me the count of DROP events for
specific incoming

list free space via rsyncd ?
Hello,
if you have a backup server with rsync running in daemon mode - is there a way for a client to obtain information about free diskspace via rsync ?
I searched through all the docs, but could not find anything about it.
if there is no way, i guess implementing it would need the rsync protocol to be changed/extended !?

problem with samba on irix 6.5
I have a problem with samba 2.05a on my irix-6.5 box. Now I know this
must be a user problem because I have run samba on this machine before.
Samba compiles and runs fine and I have tried the precompiled version
too. I have /tmp shared out as [tmp] and get the following messages in
log.smb when I try to connect to it using smbclient from the localhost
smbd version 2.0.5a started.

I sure did check the firewall and selinux as well. As an extreme testing major, they are both turned off.

Ceph + RBD + Xen: Complete collapse -> Network issue in domU / Bad data for OSD / OOM Kill
Hi,
A bit of explanation of what I''m trying to achieve :
We have a bunch of homogeneous nodes that have CPU + RAM + Storage and
we want to use that as some generic cluster. The idea is to have Xen
on all of these and run Ceph OSD in a domU on each to "export" the
local storage space to the entire cluster. And then use RBD to store /
access VM images from any of the machines.

NMBD Not Starting
I moved an entire RH 6.2 server from one CPU to a new one using a tape
backup/restore. Everything from the old server is working on the new server,
but when SysV starts up smb, the nmbd daemon (2.0.6) exits with an error:
create_subnets: No local interfaces!
eth0 has already started according to the logs and console. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Updated: Sentry Port Scan Detector 0.60

package, however there have been a number of very significant changes to
this program that users of it may want to upgrade and new users may want
to check out.

[Fwd: Xinetd 2.3.10 Memory Leaks]
I just submitted a PR for this (haven't even gotten the confirmation
email), but since not everyone tracks the GNATS CVS distribution, I
figured that I'd send it here as well.

New Program: Abacus Sentry - Port Scan Detector
Hello,
I just made available a beta version of a port scan detector that I''ve
been working on. The program, called Abacus Sentry, is a port scan/probe
detector that offers what I think are a number of unique and useful
features:
- Runs on TCP or UDP sockets. Configurable by the user to bind to
multiples of sockets for increased detection coverage.
- Adjustable scan detection value with

augeas type and /etc/services
Has anyone attempted to use the augeas type to add a service? I got the
service to add no problem, but having some difficulties to get the match to
work to prevent duplicate entries from adding. Since the service-name[*]
has endless number of entries I used a glob so it checks all the entries but
that does not seem to work. Any ideas on how to proceed?
