SIGCHLD may be inherited blocked
So, we just found some ugly behaviour of OpenSSH on Solaris. Sometimes, it seems, sshd gets started with SIGCHLD blocked, this, apparently, being the setting of sshd's parent (a shell no doubt); signal blocking is inherited across exec*(). I don't know exactly which shell, or what really is at fault, but it happens. The problem is that the code in collect_children() first blocks SIGCHLD

collectd leaks SIGCHLD == SIG_IGN into plugins
Peter Dimitrov and myself were debugging a very peculiar bug when libguestfs is run as a plugin from collectd: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-November/thread.html#00023 The long story short is that collectd leaks SIGCHLD == SIG_IGN setting into plugins: https://www.redhat.com/archives/libguestfs/2018-November/msg00095.html This means that any plugin that does the usual

Two patches for OpenSSH 3.1p1 (fwd)
Can I get people from other platforms to test the waitpid.patch to see if it solves hang-on-exit on their platform? I can confirm Solaris at this moment (but I've not done heavy testing at this moment) that is works like a charm (Solaris 7). It handles 'sleep 90&' vs 'nohup sleep 90&' correctly (killed, vs left). thanks. - Ben ---------- Forwarded message

Two patches for OpenSSH 3.1p1
Please find enclosed two patches for OpenSSH 3.1p1. The first patch solves a problem where sessions will be left "hanging" when you normally exit from a ssh shell (for example by logging out from the remote host via "exit" or "logout"). The problem seems to be that sshd (and some other parts of OpenSSH) doesn't check the return code and errno from waitpid() for

Tru64 Unix vs. OpenSSH 2.9p2
Hi, We installed OpenSSH 2.9p2 with OpenSSL 0.9.6b on our Compaq Alpha ES40 running Tru64 Unix 5.0a. We've been having problems where one of our users appears in the output of "w" and is associated with a pseudoterminal even though he has no processes attached to that pty. The problem can be reproduced by connecting to the localhost host via ssh using protocol version 2, and then

openssh 3.1 and rsync dont work - BUTssh 2.9.9.p1 does !
We have AIX 4.3.3 ML09 and AIX 5.1 ML01 I have narrowed the problem down, it is nothing to do with uni/multiprocessor machines. Both rsync 2.3.1 compiled by Bull in an installp and a gcc compiled version of 2.4.5 ( by me ) both have exactly the same problem with SSH 3.1.p1 and both DONT have the problem with SSH 2.9.9p1 - so I assume this is something highly specific to SSH 3.1.1.p1 Hope this

syslinux fails to make a bootable USB stick in Slackware64-14.1 installer
Running "syslinux -s /dev/dsb" during installation of Slackware64-14.1 (to make a bootable USB stick) fails like this: Error converting to codepage 850 Invalid argument Cannot initialize 'S:' Bad target s:/ldlinux.sys syslinux: failed to create ldlinux.sys But running the same command in the installed system succeeds. In both cases we are using syslinux-4.0.6 (same syslinux

SIGCHLD race condition?
We use ssh (RedHat 2.5.2p2-5) heavily in non-interactive mode, for managing servers from central controllers, and transferring applications/ data around networks. Very occasionally we've seen the situation where the ssh client and server are both stuck in select, both selecting on only the tcp socket of the connection, and with no timeout. No children of sshd remain (even as zombies), and it

use of setsockopt(SO_LINGER)
I would like to remove setsockopt(SO_LINGER), as there does not seem to be a reason for its use. If you know of specific reasons we should keep any of these let me know, or run this patch in local test trees where possible. This is against OpenBSD, but should apply to portable with some fuzz. SIGCHLD race condition? (fwd)
Can anyone offer any advice on this issue? We've tried patching sshd to have a maximum 10 second timeout when calling select() in serverloop.c, and this doesn't appear to have had any ill effects.
