X-Windows Login
I have a server with all the x-windows stuff installed. But it's
giving me a text based login prompt on the console.
I can log onto the console, and run
gnome-session
and GNOME comes up fine. How do I turn it on so that I get a X-Window
GUI login prompt?

Server hangs initializing audio
I have a server that frequently hangs while rebooting. I see no
errors, but during the boot process it stops at this stage:
Initializing hardware... storage network audio
The cursor sits just after the word "audio" and I have to do a hard
reset to get out of it. This server has no audio capabilities, so I
am thinking that I just need to disable the audio stuff so it doesn't

console lock up
hello,
I am using 2.6.21, lguest-2.6.21-307.patch.gz and an image from
http://uml.nagafix.co.uk/Fedora7/Fedora7-x86-root_fs.bz2
the console hangs, is this expected or caused by the image? I can
still ssh to it or if I boot in single user mode the console is
available but running init3 and it's hung.
also is it possible to get the last gz patch released for 2.6.21?

yum updates
I am trying to update my cluster servers to a newer kernel. As the
csgfs stuff is not updated for 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL yet, I have to use
2.6.9-34.0.1.EL.
If I specify to update the cluster packages, yum will automatically
find the proper kernel package to meet the dependency. The problem is
that I also need the kernel-smp-devel package installed so that I can
build a new AoE driver. It doesn't

CentOS + GFS + EtherDrive
I am considering building a pair of storage servers that will be using
CentOS and GFS to share the storage from a Coraid (SATA+Raid) EtherDrive
shelf. Has anyone else tried such a setup?
Is GFS stable enough to use in a production environment?
There is a build of GFS 6.1 at http://rpm.karan.org/el4/csgfs/. Has anyone
used this? Is it stable?
Will I run into any problems if I use CentOS 3.5

Note that you can actually do 'telinit 3' and telinit 5' with systemd.

4.92 beta update to centos5 proper words of caution
For those of you who are going to do the update from the centos5 beta
to centos 5 proper despite the warnings, this is a(n incomplete) list
of instructions for how to accomplish this
1. Get yourself into runlevel 3 (telinit 3 from terminal) as the dbus
update will die if you're in X.
2. Setenforce 0 # turn off selinux as there have been some unconfirmed
reports that it will interfere with the

Installation problems with large mirrored drives
I am trying to install CentOS 4.6 to a pair of 750GB hard drives. I can
successfully install to either of the drives as a single drive, but when
I try to use both drives and mirror the partitions, I start having
problems. Anaconda crashes as it is trying to format the drives.
This is what I'm trying to create:
/dev/md0: 200MB, /boot
/dev/md1: 2GB, swap

Boot CentOS 5 to command line
Hi fellows,
Pretty new to CentOS.
I was trying to find a way to boot CentOS into command prompt instead of GUI
(or without loading any services).
Tried using 'Crl+Alt+F1' at the boot process, but, that holds the screen at
mounting and doing fstab and doesn't proceed further.
Is there anyother way to boot CentOS into command prompt without using
Rescue option from the installation CD?

Assistance with startup script
Could someone give me some assistance in getting this startup script to
conform to chkconfig and such where the service will start up after
networking comes up, and then shut down when networking goes away?
Where all do entries need to be made, and what would they consist of?
Many thanks.....
Sam

yum upgrade 4.3 -> current ?
Got a box running 4.3 x86 and we're trying up get it updated to 4.6,
but yum is consuming all available memory (1GB) and swap (2GB), and
then the oom starts killing processes.
I've disabled all the optional repositories, done yum clean all, and
still have the same problem even if I try to just update a specific
package.
Google got me this link, but no obvious resolution:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf question
If I use "system-config-display" or "system-config-display --reconfig"
although I get a message that I need to log out of GNOME, to have the
new file written, for new Display Resolution, logging out or
restarting the box does not result in the new settings for the Display
taking hold. Sometimes, the number of colors is updated, but *never*
the Resolution. Below is my xorg.conf

On the first server I have decent performance. Nothing spectacular,
but good enough. The second one
