New forkoff() and chan_wont_read/write() API
Markus,
How's this patch?
- a chan_wont_read()/chan_wont_write() API is added that is very much
like chan_read_failed()/chan_write_failed(), but for the debug
messages and chan_wont_*() don't ever call error()
The 3.0.2p1 channel_pre_x11_open() uses chan_*_failed() but looks
like it ought to use chan_wont_*() instead :)
- forkoff() no longer fakes EOF for SSHv2 (still

forkoff()
Please review the function below, forkoff(), meant to be used in
clientloop.c instead of daemon() and the code in process_escapes().
The intention is to make ~D ( like ~& but also detach) possible and to
make it possible for ssh -f (or ssh -f -f - see other thread on this)
to detach, not just forkoff().
I also intend to use the same detach technique in a feature patch for
the hang-on-exit

X11 forwarding, -f, error handling
I'd like a feature whereby ssh puts itself in the background after the
first successful X11 (or other port) forwarding.
The reason for this is simple: error handling.
If the application fails to open the X display and exits, then the
client can still exit with the application's exit code. But if the
application opens the X display successfully, then it can just display
any errors by

Protocol 2 and fork
Hello !
Like Edmund EVANS reported openssh-2.1.1p4 won't fork to background when
using protocol 2.
I managed to hack a little patch that might work ...
What is the -N command line option supposed to do ? I gather it should work
only with protocol2 and without any command to run on the server (and with
some port forwardings ??)
Anyway in the patch I put some code to check that -N is used

ssh -f and -O ControlPersist=yes, ControlMaster=yes leaves stderr open
Hi
I'm trying to wrap ssh in an application using glib. For now, I'm launching the
ssh client in master mode and want it to detach, keeping the control socket around.
I figured I could do that using the -f flag and the usual Control* options to
force ssh to daemonize (ideally without executing any command), but it turns out
that glib doesn't recognize the daemonized process as

OpenSSH (1.2.3) sshd hanging when using rsync over ssh (retry)
Now that the list is said to be open again, I'm resending this. I've
merged my changes into OpenSSH 2.1.0 as Kris imported it into FreeBSD over
the weekend.

patch almost works on 5.1A openssh 3.4p1 - get in, but get kicked out (fwd)
Hi-
I applied the privsep patch to Tru64 5.1A openssh 3.4p1 and it
*almost* works.
I get in from the client side and xauth is run, but in the meantime
the server side disconnects. Running sshd in debug mode level 3 gives
the following output:

debug1: session_input_channel_req: session 0 req shell
debug1: fd 5 setting TCP_NODELAY

ssh(1) multiplexing rewrite
Hi,
At the n2k10 OpenBSD network hackathon, I finally got some time to clean
up and rewrite the ssh(1) client multiplexing code. The attached diffs
(one for portable OpenSSH, one for OpenBSD) are the result, and they
need some testing.
The revised multiplexing code uses a better protocol between the master
and slave processes and I even bothered to write it up :) It tracks the
control sockets

ssh exit mechanism!
To whomsoever it may concern,
I use putty-0.51 as ssh client on windows and
openssh-2.9p2 implementation on RedHat 7.0 Linux as
ssh server. For the client to exit, I expected ssh
client to send SSH_CMSG_EOF to the server and the
server respond with SSH_CMSG_EXITSTATUS and finally
close the connection when the client sends
SSH_CMSG_EXIT_CONFIRMATION. This will effectively end
the server_loop in

ssh -f won't detach properly when run from cron.
Hi,
In file ssh.c, in function "ssh_session2", this piece of code:
/* If requested, let ssh continue in the background. */
if (fork_after_authentication_flag)
if (daemon(1, 1) < 0)
fatal("daemon() failed: %.200s", strerror(errno));
implements the "-f" option, but when run from cron, it does not detach
properly because of the second parameter

Bad packet length issue
Hello,
I am porting the Openssh3.4 code to a proprietary
operating system. I am running into the issue of ssh
client disconnecting with a message -
Disconnecting: Bad packet length 2782384553.
This happens only when there is a large (~100k) output
of some command executed on the remote system. If the
output is not large then it doesn't happen. I tried

sshd problem on Solaris 7: Control-C hangs shell
I have a strange problem with sshd (from openssh-2.9p2) on Solaris 7. My shell is bash. When I open an ssh session , and type a Control-C to bash's prompt, the shell hangs. (But, if I for instance run "sleep 10" (during which time the pty is in cooked mode) and press Control-C, the sleep command is interrupted quite normally, and the bash prompt returns.)

Why dup()?
Hello all,
My scripts, which read stdout from ssh, weren't seeing EOF from the
remote session.? It was being sent, but lost.? I tracked it down to the
following code, in ssh.c, at ssh_session2_open:
??????? if (stdin_null_flag) {
??????????????? in = open(_PATH_DEVNULL, O_RDONLY);
??????? } else {
??????????????? in = dup(STDIN_FILENO);
??????? }
??????? out = dup(STDOUT_FILENO);

SSH crash on OpenBSD (pledge related?)
Hello,
I just ran upon this problem and couldn't find it in bugzilla.
SSH crashes (abort trap) if all of the following conditions are met:
(a) option -f is used (crash happens when going to background),
(b) reverse port forwarding is set up (option -R),
(c) option ExitOnForwardFailure is enabled,
(d) there are no actual port-forwarding failures.
The problem can be reproduced by

pam_mkhomedir and priv separation
Hello,
I'm not sure if this has already been addressed, I looked through the
archives and can't seem to find anything. I also did some Usenet
searching and only found one article mentioning this, and it was
in French.
Anyway, the problem is that it appears as though when using privsep
opensshd doesn't execute pam_session as root, and this causes
pam_mkhomedir to fail.
