Clean way to monitor status of 'sshd' remotely?
I am trying to come up with a "clean" way to check if a machine
is running 'sshd' so it can be included in a NetSaint config.
Currently, there is a NetSaint plugin called "check_ssh", but
it simply connects to port 22, looks for the SSH version response
from the daemon, and then disconnects. This results in the
syslog file where "auth" messages are sent in

Nagios monitoring of tinc
Folks,
Does any of you have a sensible way of monitoring tinc? I haven?t tried anything yet, sorry for that. I?d like to avoid log spamming like the check_ssh plugin does (?10+ preauth' warnings a day).
check_tcp is an option, but I was wondering whether anyone cooked up something more sensible.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Nick Hibma

astping crashes asterisk manager module
hi
Just installed astping in Nagios (former netsaint), and it works fine - for
some time. After several hours, the Asterisk manager module just stopped
responding, and I had to restart to make it work
Any idea what might cause this?
Sorry - I don't have the log now. Is it possible to have asterisk log console
output somewhere?

Samba 2.2.1a and named pipes
Can Samba write to named pipes ? I am using Netsaint/Nagios for system
monitoring and the command file to write system commands to is implemented
as a named pipe. I can write normal files to the directory but whenever I
try and write to the pipe I get access denied.
Thanks.

Thanks Tom. Development doldrums in another open source project
I, too, want to thank Tom for such a great software package and all the
support he has always given.
I was just reading a Slashdot interview with the Nagios/NetSaint author
Ethan Galstad. The whole article is interesting and I bet the questions
and answers would be similar for Shorewall:

Problem: Copying large amount of files to SAMBA Server. W2KError "file in use" for exe files
At the risk of stating the obvious but 2.2.3a is rather old - try updating to the latest stable 2.2.x series of Samba. After that you might want to look into the options relating to "Oplocks"
>>I am wondering if anybody has expected the same problem before?
The only idea i have is that this error occures because i have a lot of
file and directory, chown, chmod directives in my

Being a polite client: maintaining history
Hi, folks.
I''m investigating libraries to use in a rather specialized feed
reader. Some of the sites I want to follow don''t have RSS feeds (or
have hopelessly broken feeds) so I was already planning on using
Hpricot anyway -- Mechanize is looking good, here.
In my research for my project, recipe 11.16 in O''Reilly''s Ruby

Job Posting - Early stage political startup looking for advanced rubyist and/or designer
This is a shot out in the dark, but I figured it''s worth a
try...especially in this job market. :)
My friend and I are in the very early planning stages of a startup
that will be politically focused. We intend to develop tools that
will revolutionize and dominate the next generation of the politics.

Separate list for political/philosophical discussion
Hi,
How about creating another mailing list to let people vent themselves?
It would make it easier for everyone, since technical/troubleshooting
issues and opinions target different people.
This messages is a test as well. I couldn't write to the list through
gmane so I corrected the address with gmane admin. Hope this works.

Political Spam sent through several CentOS mailing lists
The CentOS team likes to offer an apology for the political spam mails
which went through our mail servers earlier today.
Due to the nature of mailing list software for public discussion groups,
there aren't that many security measures which can be taken to check which
mails are supposed to get through and which mails aren't. Total safety can
only be had by a moderation of all lists -

Keep the politics out, please?
I understand your point.
I was just offering a bitcoin spec file for those who wanted it, no
politics in that post, and was met with resistance I suppose I shouldn't
have responded to. No rants about the fiat banking system in my original
post.
Bitcoin building on CentOS without needing an alternate TLS library
installed is new, so really that is all I wanted to do was provide a

OT: Jerry seems like such a polite chap
I always smile to myself when reading the replies on the mailing list from
Gerald (jerry) Carter. That cheers at the end of everything always makes it
seem that he is such a nice person. Of course half the reason I smile to
myself is the inanity of getting that impression from one word in an e-mail.
For all I know he is a complete jerk. And even the huge power lifters at
