[PATCH] Re: Kerberos support for portable
Thanks, Simon for the MIT Kerberos5 patches.
FWIW, here are further patches which allow openssh-3.0p1 to work
with paleo-MIT Kerberos5 1.0.6, more or less (more with tickets
and less with the auth_krb5_password {get,verify}_init_creds stuff).
BTW, the patches I pulled out of the archive seemed to have some
line wrapping problems; I had to apply several chunks by hand.
I'm therefore including

[PATCH] PermitRootLogin woes
Hi all,
among other things, we provide shell access to various unix based
platforms for our students and university staff. Recently, there has been
increasing number of root login attacks on one particular Tru64 machine
running OpenSSH.
The host is configured with "PermitRootLogin no" but every once in a while
SIA auth with TCB enhanced security locks the root account.
I suppose

[PATCH] Getting AFS tokens from a GSSAPI-delegated TGT
Here is a patch I just wrote and tested which may be of interest to
those who wish to use KerberosGetAFSToken (currently requires Heimdal
libkafs) in combination with GSSAPIDelegateCredentials. The patch is
in the public domain and comes with no warranty whatsoever. Applies
to pristine 3.8p1. Works for me on Solaris and Tru64.
I'd probably have used Doug Engert's patch from 2004-01-30 if

Password expiry in auth-krb5.c
Due to difficulties in getting PAM (with krb5) password expiry working
consistently on multiple platforms, I'd like to see if I could hack
something into auth-krb5.c to do so.
Here's a backtrace when stopped in auth_krb5_password:
#0 auth_krb5_password (authctxt=0x8e148, password=0x90250 "XXXXXXXX") at auth-krb5.c:270
#1 0x274d8 in auth_password (authctxt=0x8e148,

Timing attacks and owl-always-auth
Hi All.
Attached is a patch against OpenBSD, based in part on the owl-always-auth
patch.
The idea is that the only way out of auth_passwd for the failure case is
the "return 0" at the bottom.
I don't know if this is a good way to do it or not, it's presented for
discussion.
Also, I don't think 3.6.1p2 is quite right WRT these timing issues (eg,
you get a fast failure

Help request: merging OpenBSD Kerberos change into Portable.
Hi All.
I'm looking for some help to merge an outstanding Kerberos
credential cache change from OpenBSD into Portable. I don't know enough
about Kerberos to figure out how that change should be applied for the
non-Heimdal(?) code path.
The outstanding diff is attached.
Any volunteers?

OpenSSH and Kerberos / Active Directory authentication problems: Credentials cache permission incorrect / No Credentials Cache found
Greetings,
I'm working on the infrastructure of a medium size client/server
environment using an Active Directory running on Windows Server 2003 for
central authentication of users on linux clients.
Additionally OpenAFS is running using Kerberos authentication through
Active Directory as well.
Now I want to grant users remote access to their AFS data by logging in
into a central OpenSSH

BSD Auth: set child environment variables requested by login script [PATCH]
Hello,
in the BSD Authentication system the login script can request environment
variables to be set/unset. The call to auth_close() in auth-passwd.c does
change the current environment, but those changes are lost for the child
environment.
It would be really useful to add some kind of mechanism to get
those changes into the child environment. I've added two possible
solutions. Both

krb5 problem: KRB5CCNAME is ""; possible fix for OpenSSH 3.0.2p1
I'm using a OpenSSH 3.0.2p1 with the krb5 patch from
<http://www.sxw.org.uk/computing/patches/openssh.html>.
I'm getting KRB5CCNAME set to "" even though
<http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=openssh-unix-dev&m=98269278629018&w=2>
mentions fixing it. This causes things like kinit to
fail with a somewhat uninformative error message.
The relevant sshd_config lines

pass them in would be to add fields to the Authctxt structure, which gets
passed down into auth_krb5_password(), although possibly not the best. Perhaps
using a prompter isn't the best way to go, either, I'm not sure.
Ultimately, I'm simply looking for any pointers as to the best way to proceed,

patch: disable credential forwarding after password auth.
Dear list,
since the order of authentication and AFS token/KRB TGT forwarding
changed (around 3.0), we have had problems with users accidentally
overwriting their credentials from a "password" login with forwarded
credentials. E.g. user A logs in as user B, but stays with the AFS
permissions of user A. A workaround is to use "-k" on these sessions,
but "it worked without

popbio and stochastic lambda calculation
Hello R users,
I am trying to calculate the stochastic lambda for a published matrix
population model using the popbio package.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to match the published results. Can
anyone tell me whether this is due to slightly different methods being
used, or have I gone wrong somewhere in my code?
Could the answer be as simple as comparing deterministic lambdas to

file-permition samba vrs novell !
hi there !
I want to change a novell-netware server to a samba server, and
there i have a big problem with the file-permitions !
we use a big database-system. the clients searches for the
programs and for the data's on the same drive, so i must have one
share with different rights (rwx ... for data and rx for programs)
the directory structure is the following:

Hi Tom,
Same problem, different flavor - now you make the directory Executable by
ppsuser (you can cd thru it) but once you are there, you cannot SEE the files
in the directory (took away read access on the directory from the ppsuser
group...). Problem is that Samba does different things depending on whether it
is checking for the existence of a file or trying to open a file. Bottom line

smbldap-tools vrs. Ldapsam:Editposix
Hi,
recently I got my ldap server up an running and now I'd like to start to
use it with our 600-user-300-windows-pc samba server.
(Centos 5.4, samba-3.0.33-3.28, openldap-2.3.43, smbldap-tools-0.9.5-)
So I started to read the samba how to, some books, a lot of postings and
finaly tried first the smbldap-tools from idealx.
After that I tried the Ldapsam:Editposix as this is the build in

preferences in used Compaq Proliant DL380 G1 vrs DL380 G2 etc
greetings,
for those of you in the know, may i have some assistance in helping to make
better decisions in purchasing more used server toys to install CentOS on
please? :-)
in the Compaq Proliant Rackmount DL380 line, the one that looks like the
older 1850R is called a G1 meaning Generation 1 right?
and then the DL380 G2 is a redesign that is gray and just has 6 drive bays
up front correct?

overview zlib efficiency?
Hi,
may be someone has already done that: Do you have a script(?) tool which
shows the efficiency of the mail compression if zlib is used?
Something that shows the uncompressed size vrs. the compressed.
Thanks for hints! /G?tz

Re: R vrs S
Hi, I am relatively new to R programming. I have Guido's version on a
Win95 Pentium with 32 Mb RAM.
I tried to compile the Package MIXREG of Rolf Turner in S to R
almost everything works OK but he has a function po = partial outer
product as follows:
po <- function(a,b) {
array(apply(b,2,"*",a),dim=c(dim(a),dim(b)[2]))) }

as.list.matrix
I found the need of converting a matrix into a list of its columns
(for use with do.call), and was surprised there was no method
as.list.matrix, it could easily be a part of as.list default
I wrote
my.as.list.matrix <- function(mat) {
if(!is.matrix(mat))stop("Argument must be a matrix")
n <- NCOL(mat)
res <- vector(mode="list", length=n)
