OpenSSH 3.5p1 and BSM for Solaris
Can someone help me get BSM working with Solaris 8 and OpenSSH 3.5p1?
I saw the patch here for OpenSSH 3.4p1, but do not know how to apply it to OpenSSH 3.4p1 nor do I feel comfortable modifying to work with OpenSSH 3.5p1:
openssh-unix-dev at mindrot.org
Is this patch needed to fix the BSM crontab issue only, or is it required for BSM auditing in general?

Monitoring filessytem access
When somebody is hammering on the system, I want to be able to detect who''s
doing it, and hopefully even what they''re doing.
I can''t seem to find any way to do that. Any suggestions?
Everything I can find ... iostat, nfsstat, etc ... AFAIK, just show me
performance statistics and so forth. I''m looking for something more
granular. Either *who* the

On-write Automatic Snapshot
Apologies if this has been addressed, but looking at some of the sun
blogs and google searches I have not been able to find an answer.
Does ZFS support on write automatic snapshots?
For example, according to defined policy, every time a file is written
a snapshot is created with the diff stored. I can see this being
useful in high security environments and companies that have extreme

RFE: Portable OpenSSH
For a future release of Portable OpenSSH, it would be nice to have a
./configure option to enable the binaries produced, to be statically
linked.
I tried using LDFLAGS option to ./configure .... but this passes
arguments to gcc not ld, this should be documented.
Additionally, I feel that ./configure should --extra-inc=dir and
--extra-lib=dir to add paths to compile (-I) and link lines (-L &

Bug with OpenSSH and Crontab under Solaris 8
Hi,
I have a issue with OpenSSH 3.7.1p2 and crontab (solaris 8). The crontab
will not execute correctly the commands if I edit it by using OpenSSH.
client (Solaris 8 / Openssh 3.7.1p2) ---> server (Solaris 8 / Openssh
3.7.1p2).
Next, I edit the crontab with "vi" using a console session and I save it
without doing modification. The crontab works perfectly now ! ?

2.5.1p1/p2 PermitRootLogin broke (Solaris)
I updated my Solaris 8 machines from openssh-2.3.0p1 to 2.5.1p1 yesterday and
it fixed the cron/audit issue but now root logins are no longer permitted. I
updated it to 2.5.1p2 this morning and that is still the case:

Question/concern about bsm auditing option on solaris
Hello,
I downloaded and compiled the Mar 2, 2005 snapshot and compiled it with
bsm auditing for solaris turned on. I've been noticing about a dozen or
so of the following messages per day now. Not sure exactly what it is, or
if it is a big issue.
Mar 3 13:46:10 machine_name sshd[15298]: [ID 800047 auth.crit] fatal: mm_request_send: write
If it matters it is running on solaris 8

Suggestion: Disable PrivilegeSepartion by default
PrivilegeSeparation seems to be a valuable option, however at its
current maturity level it is the cause of several problems. Just to name
a few:
- Incompatible with BSM auditing on Solaris
- Incompatible with PAM password aging (for this reason??? the code to
handle password expiration has been disabled without ANY notice)
- Causes core dumps on HP-UX
I think PrivilegeSeparation should be

Patch for "last" providing incorrect information on Solaris 8
I have put together a simple set of diffs that corrects the problem
described by Steven Fishback <sfishback at interpath.net> on 10-30 on this
list regarding incorrect information reported by last on Solaris. The
patches merely pass along the username in the utmpx record for a logout.
Is there any reason why this would be a problem with other OSes? If not,
maybe this could be rolled into the

OpenSSH, Solaris 8, and BSM works with BSM patch, but must disable privilege separation
To get BSM working on Solaris 8 with OpenSSH, I did this:
Download John R. Jackson's OpenSSH 3.5p1 BSM patch here, and save as "patch.tar.gz":
http://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=125
(NOTE TO OpenSSH DEVELOPERS, can you incorporate this patch into the next version of OpenSSH?)

Adding Solaris Audit to sshd (and sftp-server)
Hi Damien,
I'm working with the Solaris team that is integrating openssh
into upcoming Solaris releases. I'm looking for advice from the
upstream community. You were suggested for that advice. If
there are other mailing lists you'd like me to ask, I'm happy
to do so, or if you'd like to forward, please feel free to do so.

way to create a parent directory if it doesn't exist?
Is there any way to create a parent directory for a file if it doesn''t
exist?
Trying this:
file { "/etc/crontabs/$title.crontab":
source => "puppet:///crontabs/$title.crontab",
ensure => present,
owner => $user,
recurse => true
}
but it''s failing because /etc/crontabs doesn''t exist.
Thanks :)

cfengine and crontab
The docs to installing cfengine refers to /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root
That doesn't exist. Nor does /etc/crontab. Heck I remember that from the
"old days", now there are lots of cron entries, in /etc but no crontab.
Not installed by default. So, I'm hunting that one down. Nate, what did
you wind up doing?? Ric

Crontabs
Hey list,
I have several crontabs set up to run at night and I'm not convinced
they are running but of course, I'm not here to see for sure!
The crontabs are like the following example;
30 20 * * * sh /home/a_user/nightlyscrips/nightly_script_1 >
/home/a_user/nightlyscripts/`date +%d-%m-%Y--%H-%M-%S`.log
However, if this would have successfully ran last night I would surely
expect to

Random files in homedir gets deleted
On one of my systems I seem to loose a file or two from time to time.
Last night, one of my files (/home/online/sh/NattjobbPrivat.sh) was
deleted/removed/vanished. Another time it was /home/online/sh/daemon
that was deleted.
But I can't seem to find anything strange in the logs or in the history,
nor would any of my scripts running in crontab mess with those files.
Where can I look for
