Fix for USE_POSIX_THREADS in auth-pam.c
As many of you know, OpenSSH 3.7.X, unlike previous versions, makes
PAM authentication take place in a separate process or thread
(launched from sshpam_init_ctx() in auth-pam.c). By default (if you
don't define USE_POSIX_THREADS) the code "fork"s a separate process.
Or if you define USE_POSIX_THREADS it will create a new thread (a
second one, in addition to the primary thread).

LinuxPAM and sshd: changing conversation function doesn't work but claims to.
Hi.
I'm one of the OpenSSH developers, and I've done some of the work on
sshd's PAM interface recently.
I've discovered some behaviour peculiar to LinuxPAM that I can't
explain: changing the conversation function does not appear to work,
even though the pam_set_item() call claims to succeed. The previous
conversation function is still called.
Background: the PAM API

auth-pam.c support for pam_chauthtok()
When we installed OpenSSH 2.1.1p4 on our Solaris systems, our users
noticed that it did not honor password expiration consistently with
other Solaris login services.
The patch below is against OpenSSH 2.2.0p1 and adds support for PAM
password changes on expiration via pam_chauthtok(). A brief summary of
changes:

OpenSSH3.0p1/PAM/Sol8
Hi there,
I just tried out OpenSSH3.0p1 running on Solaris 8 with PAM (--with-PAM).
The problem was mentioned some time ago and is still there :-(
When a password is expired you are prompted to change it now, enter your
login password and after doing so you are instantly disconnected. I think
this is a problem with PAM and not SSH, but how can I get a solution on this
?

PAM sessions and conversation functions
In OpenSSH 3.6.1p2, pam_open_session() ran with a conversation function,
do_pam_conversation(), that fed text to the client. In OpenSSH 3.7.1p2,
this is no longer the case: session modules run with a conversation
function that just returns PAM_CONV_ERR. This means that simple session
modules whose job involves printing text on the user's terminal no
longer work: pam_lastlog, pam_mail, and

Problem with non-interactive shells on Sol8 with 3.7.1p1
We recently started upgrading OpenSSH on our Sol8 systems and we've run
into a problem were we can run commands on a remote system since we
installed 3.7.1p1. The debug output from sshd is attached below. We use
PAM in our environment, and have since 2.9.9p2. I think most of the
systems were running 3.4p1 prior installing 3.7.1p1 and they were working

New password echoes on Sol8
I tried replacing readpassphrase() for v2.9.9p2 on Sol8 with a different
version that just calls getpassphrase(). It appears to solve the echo
problem when the user tries to login in interactive mode and needs to
change their password.
Can anyone else try this with v2.9.9p2 on Solaris? Be sure to add:
#define HAVE_GETPASSPHRASE
... to config.h when compiling (since it's not a configurable

PAM fails to change user password
Hi, freebsd-security.
I have FreeBSD 5.3-STABLE.
When I try to change user's password (via passwd) I recieve the
following:
passwd: entry inconsistent
passwd: pam_chauthtok(): error in service module
passwd: in pam_sm_chauthtok(): pw_copy() failed
and password stays unchanged.
There are no other errors in the authorization system at all.
Contents of /etc/pam.d stayed unchanged (compared to

Only one chance to enter a new password?
Hello there,
We are using OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7d 17 Mar 2004 on various
Solaris boxes with PAM and an LDAP server back end.
Recently we have added a requirement for users to have complex
passwords. The problem is, if a user's password has expired, when they
log in they are prompted for a new password (good) but if they enter a
non-complex new password the session is closed rather than

[PATCH] Make PAM chauthtok_conv function into tty_conv
Hi All.
Attached is a patch that converts pam_chauthtok_conv into a generic
pam_tty_conv, which is used rather than null_conv for do_pam_session.
This allows, for example, display of messages from PAM session modules.
The accumulation of PAM messages into loginmsg won't help until there is
a way to collect loginmsg from the monitor (see, eg, the patches for bug
#463). This is because the

Problem connecting to v2.9.9p2 on Solaris 8
I ran into a weird problem yesterday where Putty can't connect to my
OpenSSH/Sol box (and still can't ever since). On the Putty side I get the
error message:
"internal fault: chaos in SSH 2 transport layer"
I've attached the "sshd -d -d -d" syslog output.
Any ideas what's going wrong here? From a layman's point of view, it
would appear that Putty and

kerberos ticket on login problem
I'm experimenting with smb + winbind.
My host is joined to AD and I can login to my host fine using my AD
credentials via SSH.?? The only issue is that I don't get a Kerberos
ticket generated.
In /etc/security/pam_winbind.conf I have:
krb5_auth = yes
krb5_ccache_type = KEYRING
In /etc/krb5.conf, I also have:
default_ccache_name = KEYRING:persistent:%{uid}
Using wbinfo -K jas, then

Failed to establish your Kerberos Ticket cache due time differences with the domain controller
I did re-read the whole thread again.
Im running out of options..
When i look at :
https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/PAM_Offline_Authentication
You can do these last checks.
Run the : Testing offline authentication as show on the wiki.
Debian normaly does not have /etc/security/pam_winbind.conf, check if its there if so backup it remove it.
Check if these packages are installed.

[PATCH]: Call pam_chauthtok from keyboard-interactive.
Hi All.
This patch calls pam_chauthtok() to change an expired password via PAM
during keyboard-interactive authentication (SSHv2 only). It is tested on
Redhat 8 and Solaris 8.
In theory, it should have simply been a matter of calling pam_chauthtok
with the PAM_CHANGE_EXPIRED_AUTHTOK flag, it'd only change the password is
if it's expired, right? From the Solaris pam_chauthtok man page:

PAM_RHOST item
A little problem, which is bugging me: when using PAM authentication,
Dovecot (0.99.5) does not set the PAM_RHOST item, so the PAM modules
cannot know who the client is. We need this for some PAM module doing
access control.
Changing passdb-pam.c to pam_set_item it seems trivial, but I'm bugged
as to how to get the client name from there. It seems not to be
available in the auth_request
