password expiry/changing
hi,
does openssh have support for letting the user change his expired
password? we are using password aging on solaris 6. our current
build of openssh 2.5.2p2 asks for the password 3 times, then
disconnects the user without allowing him to log in or change it. if
not, are there any workarounds (other than root resetting the user's
password manually).
thanks,

scp hardwires location to ssh?
hello,
i'm building a solaris package of openssh 2.5.1 for my employer. my
configure string is this:
./configure --prefix=/usr/share/jon
--with-xauth=/usr/openwin/bin/xauth --with-ipv4-default
--with-tcp-wrappers --with-pid-dir=/etc --sysconfdir=/etc
i use a prefix of /usr/share/jon , then build the system V package
from there. most things work great, but somehow scp does not. it

WORKGROUP authentication with netapp and multiple sambas (NIS?)
Hello samba folks,
I am thinking about how to upgrade my current file servers. I have a
Network Appliance NAT (CIFS and NFS) that did not recognize the 2.X
samba PDC (due to 2.x only partially supporting unicode). Unwilling
to put in a native windows PDC, I threw in the towel, and deployed
Windows native networking (WORKGROUP). (2 logins required, but simple).
This small company of 15 uses

Generating password string in /var/nis/passwd with Perl
Hello,
in our network we have AD (Win 2003) for user authentication
under Windows and NIS (CentOS 5.2) for same under Linux:
# rpm -qf /var/yp
filesystem-2.4.0-1.el5.centos
ypbind-1.19-8.el5
yp-tools-2.9-0.1
ypserv-2.19-3
I have written a CGI Script to add new users both to AD and
NIS and also to create the home dirs at our NetApp-Filer.
Unfortunately some steps still have to be made by hand

ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
hello,
i built an ssh 2.5.1p2 package for solaris. it's installed into
/usr/local (with sysconfdir=/etc) on an administrative host with write
access to /usr/local. other hosts nfs mount /usr/local. i had a
script copy the following files generated from the package install
into each host's /etc directory:

winbind and NIS+NFS
Does winbind play well with NIS (or vice versa)? In my initial test, it
doesn't seem that a machine that is running winbind will serve the user list
over NIS to NIS clients.
[ w2k3/ads ] --winbind--> [ Server 1 ] --NIS--> [ Server 2 ]
I'd like to be able to authenticate connections (ssh/login) to Server 2 using
the same logins as on Server 1 (samba) and the

NFS/NIS and firewalls
I have a few C5 machines on an isolated LAN that connect to a RHEL5
server via NFS and NIS for authentication. I discovered that one of the
C5 workstations worked fine for NFS exporting, but refused to
collaborate with the EL5 server for NIS user authentication.
I had successfully connected other systems to this server without issue,
but this machine was finicky.

Strategy for using CentOS on laptops in an NIS environment
We use NIS (ypbind) and Kerberos at work for all our Linux and Unix
systems. Home directories are mounted via autofs from an NIS map.
Everything works just fine as long as all network resources are
available (however, things turn ugly when the NIS servers are not
reachable). Some users also want to start using laptops and bring
them home or on trips to continue working while not at

Maildir/mbox on a per-user basis
Hello,
The Wiki indicates that Dovecot can do either mbox or Maildir on a
per-user basis:
default_mail_env can be overridden in userdb for each user. This works
with userdbs supporting the "mail" attribute (eg. passwd-file, SQL,
LDAP).
How exactly does one do this for passwd-file?
Thanks,

Setting up a two-interface shorewalled system supporting local NIS/YP and NFS
Hello all.
You might understand by now that I''m experimenting with shorewall on my
FC3 (kinda) system. It''s a two interfaced system, with the internet on
eth0, net, and the local network on eth1, loc. the machine fw runs
shorewall 2.0.10 right now.
The thing is that I want to try to use NIS/YP on the local machines and
have fw run the ypserv. Furthermore, I''d like

Re: Linux only Network: Samba ?? or Nis and NFs??
Hi,
I'm trying to build an only Linux (RedHat 8.0) network. I've tried NIS(for centralised passwords) and NFS, seems to work OK. Sometimes my clients stop responding. I may be doing something wrong. I've just been told that all of this can be done with Samba. CEntralised User naes and passwords
and homes. So that any user can logon from any linux workstation be validated by a server

Linux NIS/NFS/Samba server bound to Active Directory
Hello all!
We are currently testing the implementation of a multi-use
server at my work. I am working with a Windows 2003 RC2 domain controller,
and a CentOS 5 NIS/NFS/Samba server. I've followed various how-to's and
researched several errors during the past sixteen hours working on this but
all things I try seem to come back with empty results.

SAMBA, NIS and NFS
Hi All
Some background first
I have been asked to set up an environment involving three machines
1. A windows 2000 client
2. A Solaris 8 E450 / NIS client
3. An SGI IRIX fileserver/ NIS server holding user home directories
The E450 NFS mounts the SGI and users have their home directories on
the SGI. When users want to test their application software they ssh
from their windows client into

Replacement for NIS/NFS?
Hi,
Over the last few years, I've been using a rather bone-headed solution
to implement centralized authentication and roamin user profiles in
Linux-based networks: a combination of NIS and NFS.
I'm aware it's not ideal in terms of security, but it's been running in
our local school since 2010, and it just works. The current setup is
based on Slackware Linux on both server

Winbindd as NIS replacement in heterogen environement
Hi all
We have the following environement:
Microsoft ADS for Windows Users, NIS for Un*x Users.
Samba 3.x Fileservers.
Win2k/XP Clients which use CIFS to connect to the Fileserver.
FreeBSD/Linux Clients which use NFS to connect to the Fileserver.
For the moment, Windows User authenticate against the ADS and Un*x users
authenticate against a NIS Server. Everything runs fine.
But we would like

d) Samba server is Linux, with winbind and kerberos; samba version is 3.3

I'm now pretty sure this an OpenSSL bug. I helped someone else with a
crash in the same place (DH GEX) and was able to reproduce it. It was
a caused by a problem in UltraSPARC assembler implementation of
bn_sub_words(). Since it's in the assembler code, building

rsync via ssh dumps core after being interrupted
Hi,
I'm using rsync (version 2.5.5 protocol version 26) on RedHat Linux 8.0:
rsync -ae ssh /tmp/junk/ otherhost:/tmp/junk
If I interrupt rsync (^C), sometimes rsync on the other host dumps core
or uses all (!) available memory and all CPU.
gdb on a core file:
$ gdb -q /usr/bin/rsync /tmp/core.4576
(no debugging symbols found)...
Core was generated by `/usr/bin/rsync --server --sender
