Can someone explain why we need this fix on Solaris 2.6?

Kerberos4 / AFS library issues
Could people who have been having issues with Portable OpenSSH and
Kerberos 4 please try the following patch. You will need to run
"autoreconf" (i.e you will need autoconf installed) and then run
./configure again.

[PATCH] Separate CFLAGS and CPPFLAGS
If you want to override CFLAGS on the make line (eg. "make CFLAGS='-O3'"),
you lose because you end up stomping preprocessor flags as well.
Preprocessor should be in CPPFLAGS. The following patch takes care of this.

2.5.5 build ignores $CPPFLAGS
(I'm not subscribed; Mail-Followup-To set.)
Contrary to the claim in the output of ./configure --help, $CPPFLAGS
is in fact not influential.

configure.in reorder patch
Feb 12 CVS (sort of, see warning below)
I've had to change around some of the code in configure.in
to get some platforms to compile with the --with-tcp-wrappers option.
Basicly I have set it up to
check headers
check system libraries
check for optional packages
check functions
I have also tried to clean up the library order as it is important
on some platforms.
This patch works on
Solaris

openssh for UWIN
I am enclosing a context diff of the changes that I made to get
openssh working on UWIN. UWIN is a UNIX operating system layer
that runs on Win32 systems. For more information on UWIN
go to http://www.research.att.com/sw/tools/uwin/.
I also ran configure using -with-cppflags=-D_BSDCOMP=2. I don't
know where that information would go with the source code.
Let me know if you need more

Updated CFLAGS patches and make test compilation conditional
Hi Erik,
I've found a middleground for the problem of setting default CFLAGS. I've gone back
to setting them if {C,CXX,CPP,LD}FLAGS are unset at the onset of the configure script
(i.e., the user hasn't specified anything) and then proceed to set them to the defaults
as before. This has been suggested before:

PCRE, and setting C-, LD- and CPP-FLAGS for a local r-devel installation
Hello,
Got some at the time surprising errors some days ago when building a local
r-devel installation on a cluster, with apparent outdated or missing dev
versions of some files. After reading the r-devel news (
https://developer.r-project.org/blosxom.cgi/R-devel/NEWS), it turned out
that " Use of the included versions of ?zlib?, ?bzlib?, ?xz? and PCRE is
deprecated: these are frozen and

Small aix patch to configure.in
The following aix patch to configure.in forces /usr/include to be searched
before /usr/local/include on AIX systems only. This allows the normal
include rules to untangle <login.h> from "login.h" on AIX when using the AIX
cc compiler or gcc. Please see that it gets applied to the current cvs
source tree. It fixes the only compile time error the current cvs tree has

debian lintian warn: hardening-no-fortify-functions
Hello,
to build + packages dovecot I use the usual Debian tool chain. That includes build with selected GCC options and running lintian.
I notice since a long time (read: many earlier versions, up to 2.2.35) this lintian warnings:

Fix for smbpasswd Samba 2.2.4 on Solaris only taking 8 character passwords
Under Samba 2.2.4 (and possibly earlier), smbpasswd (when run locally) only
really reads the first 8 characters, as opposed to the full password.
Obviously, this can cause mass confusion. :)
The fix is pretty simple (I would offer a diff, but this is the kind of
thing the configure script should check for...) - under Solaris getpass()
will only return 8 characters - you must use getpassphrase()

Lets try this push again.. 2.5.1p2 bugs left.
Things that are still outstanding:
1) Solaris/Redhat/HPUX session.c patch. I've not seen a ya or na on
Kevin's pam patch from the Solaris group.
2) Odd Redhat/Debian scp/ssh issues. .. I'm baffled, and I can't
replicate the bug. Nor have I seen anything remotely like it reported.
3) SCO.. Is it happy yet for compiling? =)
Completed:
1) mdoc2man.pl .. Commited into

additional compiler hardening flags
Hi all.
Any reason not to turn these on if the system supports them? They're
cheap but not free (a bit under 1% slower to run the complete regress
suite in a completely unscientific test).
They're based on info from these places:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ToolChain/CompilerFlags
http://wiki.debian.org/Hardening
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/hardened/gnu-stack.xml
and I've attempted to

OpenSSH bug in MacOS X
In MacOS X 10.0.4, and probably other versions, getaddrinfo() is broken in
such a way that when you try to connect to certain hosts, openssh fails.
getaddrinfo is first failing the lookup, and then failing to return with an
error code when it does fail. I've found that if you define
BROKEN_GETADDRINFO for OS X, it compiles and runs just fine. This patch
against configure works for me:
