fatal: PRNG initialisation failed
Heya,
I have compiled and installed OpenSSH on a Solaris/Sparc machine and
whenever I try to start any of the ssh programs I get
"fatal: PRNG initialisation failed -- exiting"
Now, I have looked through the mailing lists and have seen some mention
that this indicates it can't open the ssh_prng_cmds file, which
entropy.c also seems to indicate the problem is. However, this snippet

Problems/patches for BSD/OS 4.0.1
Two small problems with 2.2.0p1 on BSD/OS 4.0.1, both invoving the
internal entropy collector:
1) The ``ls'' commands in ssh_prng_cmds.in all use -n, which isn't valid
on BSD/OS and thus caused them all to fail when fixprogs checked them.
BSD/OS does, however, have a -T flag which gives complete timestamp
information (month, day, year, hour, minute, and second), which seems

still sftp-server problems with Irix?
Hello all,
Using 20000930 snapshot on Irix 6.5.9m.
SFTP connections with SSH 2.3.0 (Windows) die right out. Similar
configuration and the same version works fine in Red Hat Linux 6.2.
This is probably related to 'sftp' thread 7-10 days ago.
The error messages captured in debug mode:

entropy problems IRIX
Hello!
I am running openSSH 2.9x on an IRIX 6.5.x platform.
This was recently installed using SGI-supplied
"freeware" binaries.
I find that as time goes on, it takes more attempts
to establish an ssh connection from the IRIX platform
to another machine, as it fails with "not enough entropy
in PRNG." I posted a note asking for assistance, and
received a reply suggesting I

prng_cmds/init_rng() question/patch
I have a need to provide ssh client binaries for use elsewhere on
several platforms, some without /dev/random support. I can't assume
that users will know how to install/run prngd or egd, so I was
planning to rely on the builtin prng code. However this require the
ssh_prng_cmds file to exist in a fixed location -- which would mean
making binaries which either look for it in . or other

openssh-3.2.3p1: Problem with make install after configure --prefix=
Hi
I built openssh on solaris 2.6 after running
configure --prefix=/my/install/dir --with-ssl-dir=/where/ssl/is
Everything compiled Ok but there was a problem when doing make install, as
ssh-rand-helper was looking in the wrong place for prng_command_file, so
here is a patch for ssh-rand-helper.c. You need to delete a space before
the string.

PORTING to IBM OS/390: select() always returning 0 in entropy.c
Hello,
I'm attempting to port OpenSSH to IBM's S/390 mainframe. Things have gone well but I have come a little unstuck with the internal PRNG. Although the commands in ssh_prng_cmds are being executed the select() seems to be returning 0 and therefore the cose is assuming that the forked process has timed out. This could be a difference in the way that select is implemented on OS/390.

Installation globbers ssh_prng_cmds
Gidday,
I've just tried installing openssh-2.2.0p1 and found that it globbers my
ssh_prng_cmds file which has been customised from the normally installed
one. On BSDi 4.0.1 it doesn't detect enough commands for ssh-keygen to be
happy. Most of the commands do actually exist, but I have to specify where
they are.
Could someone please modify the installation scripts to either

Why does prng always need to run the ssh_prng_cmds?
This question is primarily for Damien, but if anybody else knows the
answer please chime in.
Why is it that on systems with no /dev/random or PRNGD or EGD (and I have a
lot of Solaris systems in this situation because I don't have root access
on them) that the OpenSSH 'ssh' command has to run through all those
ssh_prng_cmds every time it starts up? Why doesn't ~/.ssh/prng_seed

OpenSSL PRNG
Just for peace of mind, can someone who knows the openssh code better than
I do, confirm that openssh doesn't use (in any circumstances) the openssl
prng (since the code in versions prior to 0.9.6b is rather weak).
My understanding is that it doesn't (using either /dev/random, egd, prngd or
the builtin code), but I may have missed some other use of the openssl prng
elsewhere...

Will OpenSSH fallback to internal PRNG?
Greetings.
I'm wondering if OpenSSH automatically falls back to the internal
PRNG (such as used on Solaris) when it can't use a better alternative.
The reason I ask is this: the machine I am compiling OpenSSH on has
the /dev/random patch for Solaris 8. I'd like OpenSSH to use
/dev/random
whenever possible, if it exists. However, I'd prefer NOT to have to
compile a separate

openssh-2.1.1p1 on Debian slink and potato
Just today I compilied openssh-2.1.1p1 on Debian Slink and Potato both to come out with the same problem.
I am compiling them with openssl-0.9.5a.. The configure line I use for openssh is below:
./configure --sysconfdir=/etc/ssh --prefix=/usr --with-ssl-dir=../openssl-0.9.5a
So I compile, do a make install restart the sshd daemon and everything seems fine.
Then when I do a w at the prompt

[Bug 449] ssh_prng_cmds has malformed arp command
http://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=449
------- Additional Comments From keith at ajmani.org 2002-12-01 04:43 -------
Aside: this bug also existed in previous versions of opensshd. My bad for not
reporting it earlier.

PRNG is not seeded
This is likely a linux or ssh problem, but perhaps someone else on this
list may have encountered it. I have run about 15,000 instances of
rsync in the last year, (about 500 total hours of rsyncing) using ssh
as a transport mechanism ( actually, I am running the dirvish backup
wrapper, www.dirvish.org, around rsync). In all cases, I am pulling
filesystems from a linux client to a linux backup

OpenSSH 3.4p1 "PRNG is not seeded"
I upgraded from OpenSSH_3.0.2p1 to OpenSSH 3.4p1. Starting SSHD or
ssh-keygen I'm getting the "PRNG is not seeded".
I have verified that prngd is running and "egc.pl /var/spool/prngd/pool get"
runs just fine reporting 32800 bits of entropy.
My platform is Solaris 8 (sparc) and I downloaded binaries from
www.sunfreeware.com.
My guess is the build of OpenSSH 3.4.p1 is

trouble logging out when using protocol version 2
Dear OpenSSH gurus,
My machine is running Red Hat Linux 6.1 and has installed all of the
6.binary rpms generated from the source rpms openssh-2.2.0p1-2.src.rpm
6.and openssl-0.9.5a-3.src.rpm.
When I use protocol version 2 (by specifying "Protocol 2,1" in
~/.ssh/config), I can establish connections properly, but they do not
shut down properly. When I run a remote command by "ssh
