How to make a customized, unattended install for FreeBSD?
I would like to customize our store-bought, bootable FreeBSD CD
so that it does a non-interactive (or minimally interactive ;-)
install.
The interim solution we've devised has our lab execution
techs booting from a CD and then using the Sysinstall "Load config
file" menu option to load an "install.cfg" file from a floppy.
We'd like to eliminate this step by

Backup for linux/asterisk
After getting my feet wet with asterisk@home, I want to set up a second
asterisk box to add a call shop billing and other add-ons such as LCR.
My question is as follows. Is there a backup program that will save to
a tape drive or a USB CD Writer so if I mess up an install I don't have
to go through a complete reinstall? I saw a few programs out there but
they required X windows and from

Thanks in advance!

Milestone
Well I now have a 4.0 server at a solid checkpoint. Before I start the
chore of setting up SAMBA and LDAP.
Part of the delay was I did not copy all of the needed DNS files, and I
have to reerad the BIND book.
So I want to be able to get to this point again easily.
I did not note down what options I had selected during install. Is there
some way in the install log to figure that out?

rsync for transferring harddrive images
Hi,
I have a project where I have to backup (copy /dev/hda on a server) and
recover (copy back) hardrives from the clients. I tried this with rsync
using:
BACKUP: rsync /dev/hda user@host:/path/to/image
RECOVER: rsync user@host:/path/to/image /dev/hda
There is a problem when accessing devices like /dev/hda. The transfer
aborts after a few seconds with the error message:

transfer data from one hard drive to another
Hello I have an OS installation and data on a 40 gb drive that I would
like to image to a 80 gb drive. I don't care if the resulting
partition layout on the new drive is only 40 gb making me lose space.
I just want to move everything from the older drive because I think
it's failing. I have looked at partimage and mondo rescue as imaging
solutions but both deal with partitions. CAn someone

Centos kernel c headers [dnk]
Good day -- I am having a go at installing VMware on my centos 4.2
machine. I am going through the configuration script and I am getting
to the part where I need the c headers for my kernel. What package do
I need to install to make these available, and where are they
installed to? I have been searching for this with little luck.
Thanks in advance.

Push install printers from a samba server
Hi there. I was wondering if anyone had a link to a good tutorial (or docs) in regards
to setting up a push install of printers (HP 4200N) from a samba server (CentOS 4) to a
mixed windows (98,2k,xp) enviorment. Now I have been investigating using a BAT file in a
logon script, but the results seem to be unpredictable (maybe i am usign them wrong?).
Then permissions on the target machine seem to be

Question about dd (fill a hard disks' unused space with blanks)
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with G4U (Ghost for Unix), a small cloning
application sending disk images to an FTP server.
The application reads the whole disk bit by bit, compresses it and then
stores it remotely. Due to this approach, it's more or less
filesystem-independent. The drawback is that it sometimes results in
huge image files.
Now I'm currently following a hint

AHCI and correct drive geometry?
Hey folks,
So what's the word on AHCI and bios drive geometry? I'm having a real
pain of a time trying to get some 750gb sata drives running on my
FreeBSD7 box in AHCI mode. It doesn't seem to matter what disk geometry
I suggest to sysinstall, something complains of an invalid disk upon
booting it.
Actually, in AHCI mode the bios screen doesn't report any information on

Does CentOS has problems with Norton Ghost 2003 images?
Hello all
We have two very important workstations dedicated to tasks of
development and investigation. At the moment we have installed a dual
boot platform with CentOS 4.0 and Windows XP Proffessional SP2. In
order to do backups of these machines we need to create an image with
Norton Ghost 2003.
We have worked with Ghost during several years with different
platforms (Red Hat, White Box Linux,

[Slightly OT] Data Preservation
HI All,
So I have 5 1U servers (running Windows) that have Ultra 320 SCSI
Drives in them.
The owner of these boxes wants the drives captured in their current
states to .iso or .cdr or something where if the need arises the data
can be viewed, used again, etc.
So what is the best approach? Boot from a Live CD, hook up a USB
external HD and do what? Can I create a .iso or .cdr (or some

Why does sysinstall still limits cylinders to 65535?
Hello,
I have been struglling with sysinstall, attempting to make it handle
the geometry of some large SATA drives. After a lot of effort I
decided to stop suffering and modified the program in order to
circumvent the outdated limit of 65535 cylinders (see attached patch).
I'm thinking about submitting a PR with a change request but I'd like
to get some additional opinions first. I did

FreeBSD 8.3-R sysinstall does not "see" disks that are recognized during boot
I've got a new supermicro server I'm trying to get FreeBSD on. It uses the
Intel c602 chipset, and it's my understanding that support for that
chipset (c60X) was recently added via the isci driver. Ok, great, that
explains why 8.2-R and 9.0-R didn't see the drives.
So, I grabbed the memstick image of 8.3-RELEASE that is on the ftp server,
booted it up, and sure enough, as the

"tftp>status" shows it is talking to the other box

Hi,
I would like to follow 4-stable on my FreeBSD box, and i can't fetch
binaries from /stand/sysinstall. Can anyone help me?
Here is how i did:
1) I installed 4.8-RELEASE from CD,

in the Handbook.
=> My OS version as shown by 'uname -a' and '/stand/sysinstall' is

Hello,
I didn't recieve a response on freebsd-mobile, so I'm trying here.
I'm trying to install FreeBSD 4.7-RELEASE or 5.0-RELEASE onto my Dell

Testing EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATION
Hi.
I'm trying to test EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATION in Dovecot. To do this I first
configured Thunderbird and Opera to use my server, neither of them were
successful. As a result I contacted both organisations to enquire if they
supported EXTERNAL AUTHENTICATION in their products. Thunderbird
responded and said yes. However, on closer inspection my contact at
Thunderbird identified
