KDE screensaver on Centos 4.1
The KDE screen savers will only blank out the screen though most of them test ok when you hit the test button in the Control Center. The Gnome screen savers work ok. My system has a Radeon 9200SE video card and I have a ViewSonic A70f monitor. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Duke Nukem MP
Hi, I tried to install Duke Nukem Manhattan Project (which should just run fine according to wine's appdb and frank's corner) but while loading the msi-installer wine gets stuck and prints out these messages: fixme:msi:ACTION_CustomAction msidbCustomActionTypeNoImpersonate not handled fixme:msi:ACTION_CustomAction msidbCustomActionTypeNoImpersonate not handled

Just Stuck
OK, I did the deal and I am in the process of upgrading/migrating from CentOS 5.8 x86_64 to CentOS 6.2 x86_64. But, I'm stuck with a gnome GUI that only sees 1024x768. Under CentOS 5.8 it saw 1920x1080 (without much work from me). The command I was used to , system-config-display, is gone and I've read that xrandr is the replacement. I can't find a usage document on this

A bit OT...but here is a nifty Rails sighting.... ;)
According to arstechnica, <http://arstechnica.com/reviews/games/forever.ars>Duke Nukem Forever has been ported to Ruby on Rails and is now rendered with some kind of magic mishmash of svg-canvas and ajax! This truely is an example of the incredible power of a web browser. Any hope for getting Mr. Fowler to add a Recipe for this type of thing in his new book? ;) -------------- next part

popbio and stochastic lambda calculation
Hello R users, I am trying to calculate the stochastic lambda for a published matrix population model using the popbio package. Unfortunately, I have been unable to match the published results. Can anyone tell me whether this is due to slightly different methods being used, or have I gone wrong somewhere in my code? Could the answer be as simple as comparing deterministic lambdas to

as.list.matrix
I found the need of converting a matrix into a list of its columns (for use with do.call), and was surprised there was no method as.list.matrix, it could easily be a part of as.list default I wrote my.as.list.matrix <- function(mat) { if(!is.matrix(mat))stop("Argument must be a matrix") n <- NCOL(mat) res <- vector(mode="list", length=n)

duke nukem manhattan project - doesn't see the CD
Hi I've successfully installed Duke Nukem Manhattan Project, but when I try to start it, it prompts for the CD, although the CD is in the drive and the drive is set up properly in Wine settings. It seems people have run the game successfully on wine, so perhaps someone's got a clue about this issue. Thanks for any help!

noarch concerns? dangers?
Please share some wisdom from the list... :-) Realistically there is some type of difference between an rpm made for an arch (like i386 or x86_64 etc) vrs an rpm with noarch I was just looking at and downloaded these two from dag perl-Archive-Tar-1.30-1.el4.rf.noarch.rpm perl-IO-Zlib-1.04-1.2.el4.rf.noarch.rpm they are the latest and are not assigned to an architecture there are older rpms of

system-config-display problem
I bought a Viewsonic VG730m monitor, analogue and digital. With a digital cable connected the screen keeps blanking for a second or so. system-config-display shows it configured as a CRT monitor, and refuses to accept that it is an LCD monitor. I've tried manually editing xorg.conf, putting in the manufacturer's values for horizontal and vertical refresh, but the problem remains.

Deleting for() loop in function
Dear UseRs, I wrote following function in order to solve Data Envelopment Analysis. Reason for posting is that the function is slow when nrow(dat) is large. I wonder if other functions could substitute the for() loop in the code, such as mapply(). Can anybody help to rewrite the dea() function as efficiently as possible? The code is as follows:

Tell me the truth about WINE
I'm an avid gamer, I play all kinds of games and a wide variety of specific titles, be they on the A-list or B-list. How realistic would it be for a person like me to rely solely on WINE for PC gaming? I understand that the pace with which WINE can catch up is relatively quick (a few months), but a few months is still a long time to wait if I'm itching to get started on a new release. I
