yum group install [DNK]
Hi there -- i am just looking for clarification on the yum "group
install" option....
How can you tell what are valid groups?
IE I found the below example on google:
yum groupinstall "MySQL Database"
I have heard references to doing things like:
yum groupinstall "Development Tools"
But to the point - is there a list of valid groups for install?

small "$" issue with samba on centos 4x [dnk]
Good day..... This is a slightly older issue for me. In the past I
had tried to install Samba on a centos 4.0 box, and the useradd tool
on Centos 4 would not add the "$" character to the usernames being
created. This showed up whenever a domain trust was trying to be
established for a computer that was logging into the samba share for
the first time. Maybe I messed something

VNC Remote Install Disk
Hey there - I have a tutorial i wrote for my own docs - not sure if you
guys want it on the centos wiki.
It is a custom centos server 4X disk in which the install connects to a
remote listening VNC viewer.
The purpose of this disk is simple - to be able to install a second
system with centos without having to hook up a keyboard/mouse/monitor.
This second machine is my test machine, and I

bring back sub shells
Good day, I have a centos 4.4 box (all yumed up).
Now i have a program that has a sub shell - meaning something like the
mysql command line, where once started it takes it's own commands, etc
and keeps running until a "quit" command is issued. Now what I was
wondering - is there a way to fork it to the background (something
like # command & or ctrl -z) and have the subshell keep

cloning drives
Good day everyone - This maybe somewhat OT, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good tool for
cloning *nix drives. The one thing though is that I will be cloning a smaller drive than the destination drive and
would like to distribute the free space accordingly on the new drive.
Can anyone recommend anything?
Thanks in advance.

Push install printers from a samba server
Hi there. I was wondering if anyone had a link to a good tutorial (or docs) in regards
to setting up a push install of printers (HP 4200N) from a samba server (CentOS 4) to a
mixed windows (98,2k,xp) enviorment. Now I have been investigating using a BAT file in a
logon script, but the results seem to be unpredictable (maybe i am usign them wrong?).
Then permissions on the target machine seem to be

CentOS with VMware issues
Good day everyone.....
I have an install of centos 4.0 patched to 4.2 as my base install. I
then installed VMWare 3.2 (gx) over top. I was then going through
the install of centos 4.2 (non-patched - latest ISO's) into a virtual
machine. Now here is where the issue happens.... on the install, the
file "xorg-x11" causes a typical "file can not be access/ file not

pgadmin3
Anyone been able to get pgadmin3 installed on CentOS-4 ?
The WxGTK2 stuff makes it impossible for me to get installed from
RPM/SRPM from their site and likewise, couldn't rebuild from Fedora
SRPMS either.
I figure between Jim and Owen and ???, somebody might have succeeded
where I would be doomed. I can get around with phppgadmin but pgadmin3
is pretty cool.
Thanks

iptables command to view just nat/forward info by ip
Hi there... does anyone know of a handy iptables command to look at
existing nat rules?
I tried:
iptables -t nat -L
Which was close, but the problem is that the DNAT and SNAT list the
reverse DNS for the IP's, when I would rather see just pure IP's.
I have been reading the man pages and google looking for an answer as well.
Thanks!

disable media check on custom cd [dnk]
On a previous thread I was working on a custom install disk that would boot directly
into a vnc install - well I have the disk working exactly as I need it EXCEPT for 1
thing... the option to do a media check pops up... however as per my original email -
there will be no keyboard/mouse/monitor attached during install... so I can not press
the "skip" option. Now to get the VNC install to

Bittorrent RPM/Python Issue
Hi All,
tried to install the RPM for bittorrent, and got the following,
[root at localhost bittorrent]# rpm -Uvh
BitTorrent-4.2.2-1-Python2.3.noarch.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
python(abi) = 2.3 is needed by BitTorrent-4.2.2-1.noarch
[root at localhost bittorrent]# python -V
Python 2.3.4
why is this so, when I have 2.3.4. Is this RPM only compatible with 2.3,
not 2.3.1-4? Little confused.

Good day everyone. Today has been "one of those..." days. So I have a

At any rate, I am setting up a firewall/router using centos 4.4

I have in fact enables V4 ip forwarding (by editing /etc/sysctl.conf)

When I do "rpm -i", I can still see the info via "yum info", so is there
