rsync as a bakcup tool and the case of rotated logs
Hello,
I use rsync (among many other things) as an incremental backup tool.
Every night I save /{home,etc,var} from several servers. On one of them
we keep 52 weeks of system logs, so each time syslog is rotated all old
syslog.x.gz (where x is between 1 and 213) change names. This impacts
our backup transfers because the incremental snapshot now has to include
all syslog.x.gz files even though

Hi all,
I''ve just built Mandrake 10.1 on a Compaq Deskpro that I''ve built as a
router/firewall and am redirecting port 80 outbound to force users through
the Content Filter. I''ve run this setup on Mandrake 9.0 and 10.0 without any
problems but this time the following happens.
Squid is accessed through port 3128 and Dansguardian via 8080.
If I set my browser on a

Squid as a transparent proxy
Hi,
I followed the instructions in the section "Squid
(transparent) Running on the Firewall" on
http://www.shorewall.net/Shorewall_Squid_Usage.html to
setup Squid transparently on a Linux gateway. My net
is as follows:
loc subnet --- fw Linux Gateway --- ADSL router
192.168.1.0/24 192.168.1.92 (eth1) WAN.WAN.WAN.2
(gw = WAN.WAN.WAN.WAN (eth0)

using winbind causes high load on the pdc
Hi people: I have a winbind 3.2.5 running on a box to authenticate users
in my squid. My PDC is a samba 3.0.24 and it stores users on ldap. I have
aprox 500 users and when they all use the squid my winbind generates a lot
of traffic to my pdc box causing high load on the smb process that talks
to the winbind... killing the performance of the squid.
Is there anyway to reduce this traffic?
Why

Squid + shaping question
Hi folks,
So, I have a pretty simple setup - a linux router machine running as a
firewall/router for a small neighborhood LAN (approx 20 machines). I also
have squid running on the box in non-transparent mode, and also I have set
up NAT for TCP/UDP ports above 1024 for all clients and SSH/POP/SMTP/CVS
NAT''d for selected ones based on MAC filtering. No hosts whatsoever can
access ports 80

Transparent Squid and FirewallD : fine-tuning question
Hi,
I just setup a very basic HTTP proxy with Squid on a router running CentOS 7.
Up until early 2020 I've been using a bone-headed shell script with iptables to
configure my firewall. But I decided to follow advice from a few gurus on this
list, and I've since moved my configurations to FirewallD, which works nicely.
There's one configuration left to tackle, that's port

Shorewall and squid not wokring together
Hi everybody. We are running Shorewall and Squid on
Suse on the same box. Each is working fine
independently, but we can''t get them to cooperate. The
access log in squid shows no requests when Shorewall
is on. Here are all the changes we made in the
configuration files. Everything else is the same. We
have read through the mailing list and the guide, but
still haven''t figured it

syslog-ng
Hello,
I know centos does not use syslog-ng, but I have installed it at my
university. My intention is if a particular string appears in my
/var/log/messages I would like to get an email alert.
For example, if i see a message "foo" in /var/log/kern I would like to
email myself.
Any idea how to do this? Has anyone done this before?
TIA

Squid on CentOS 7: few questions
Hi,
I recently migrated my office's server from Slackware64 14.1 to CentOS

edited the default /etc/squid/squid.conf, and here's what I have so far:

Hi everyone -
I was wondering how do I setup a rule with the following scenario:
I have a VPN site-2-site connection setup. Also, on each site I have
squid which redirect all local HTTP traffic on 3128. But I have problems
when I try to access the other site web server which is 10.50.20.198 from
my network setup which is 10.50.30.0/24. I have all other traffic flowing
between the two sites

Redirect 80 to 3128
Hello Group
I am trying to set up a demo of Squid at my location to to a person that has proxy ports blocked on his firewall at his location by having him set his IE Browser
set to use proxy server 64.42.49.235 port 80.
My thinking was to set up a rule in shorewall which redirects port 80 to 3128 as in a local setting. My test server is running rh 7.3, Shorewall 1.3.14 with one interface
