remote DoS in sftp via crafted glob expressions (CVE-2010-4755)
Hi folks. We were made aware of a MITRE CVE assignment on OpenSSH for a remote DoS in sftp, described as: The (1) remote_glob function in sftp-glob.c and the (2) process_put function in sftp.c in OpenSSH 5.8 and earlier, as used in FreeBSD 7.3 and 8.1, NetBSD 5.0.2, OpenBSD 4.7, and other products, allow remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via

[PATCH 1/2] daemon: glob: do not return directories with trailing slash
Do not pass GLOB_MARK as flag for glob(3) in the daemon implementation of glob, so names of directories will not have a trailing slash. This allows users to have filenames that can be used with other tools, such as rm. Add a new test to check this (based on RHBZ#1293271). A mild behaviour change is that users of the glob API now need to append the slash when building paths using its results.

Incorporating code from sftp-glob.c into lftp
As you might know, LFTP is a popular FTP/SFTP command-line client for most systems. One feature that is lacking from this tool is the ability to do a globbed ls via sftp. I have a patch ready for LFTP that incorporates some of the knowledge [like oddball systems glob() handling] and some of the code from sftp-glob.c for this tool to add this capability. I do, however, have some questions about

R Regular Expressions - Metacharacters
I thought that I can use metacharacters such as \w to match word characters with one backslash. But for some reason, I need to include two backslashes. > grepl(pattern='\w', x="what") Error: '\w' is an unrecognized escape in character string starting "\w" > grepl(pattern='\\w', x="what") [1] TRUE I can't find the reason for this

[nbdkit PATCH] iso: Shell-quote an alternative isoprog
Otherwise, a user can do things like "nbdkit iso . prog='date;prog'" to run unintended commands in addition to their alternative isoprog. This is not a CVE (since nbdkit isn't running with any more privileges than the user running those commands themselves), but shows the frailty of relying on the shell to parse subsidiary commands rather than exec()ing them directly. This

Identifying records with the correct number of repeated measures
Dear list, I have a dataset where we sampled multiple individuals either 1 or 9 times. Our measurement variable is 'Delta13C' (see below sample dataset). I cannot figure out how to efficiently use a vector command (preferably) or a loop to create a new vector of the names of the individuals sampled 9 times. Note that the 'FeatherPosition' variable will only be "P1" for

square brackets in expression in plots
Dears, do you know whether it is possible to include any square parantheses (brackets) in an expression to use it as an axis label? e.g. I would like to have a label like (with the sub and superscripts correct): "speed [m s^-1]" I know how to combine an expression with text via paste, but as I run soimething like: a='m*s^{-1}' plot(1:10,main=parse(text=a)) I found now way

re moving parentheses/square brackets from data frame numbers
Dear list, I am importing data consisting of numbers into dataframes. Some of the numbers are flanked by parentheses or square brackets. Thus, they are not recognized as numeric and the corresponding column is of class "factor" which makes it hard/impossible use in plotting functions. Is there a way to remove brackets from numbers in a column/row/dataframe? Kind regards, Stefan --
