Chainloading DRMK
DRMK (Dell Real Mode Kernel), now used in their DOS-based diagnostic images (probably about 2-4 years), has a rather unusual entry into the IO file (DELLBIO.BIN; similar to IO.SYS and IBMBIO.COM). After fumbling around with it over the last few days, I _think_ I've figured out the quirks of this entry point (and successfully tweaked chain.c32 to do such). dl Usual; drive number bp 0 cs

[PATCH] git tree: libfat, chain, mtools/syslinux, menu.txt
git://gnx.ath.cx/syslinux.git On branch for_hpa, I've got several groups of changes (listed bottom up) -chain.c32: the beginning of a DRMK loader; I still need to test this further and document/code what ones can possibly work -mtools/syslinux.c: Check to be sure fs is not NULL in case libfat_open() failed, like it can on a bad filesystem. [PATCH] chain.c32: support chainloading GRUB2 core.img
Here is a patch that makes it possible to chainload GRUB2 core.img form chain.c32. It reuses the grub= parameter (used for chainloading GRUB Legacy stage2): - both loaded at 0x8000 - start execution at offset 0x200 (0x8200 in memory) GRUB2 allows to specify another "GRUB home dir" than the standard /boot/grub GRUB2 doesn't allow to change the configfile 'grub.cfg' name

[PATCH] chain.c32: add support for booting the Recovery Console of Windows NT/2K/XP
The following patch for chain.c32 adds support to boot the Recovery Console of Windows NT/2K/XP. Normally when you want to boot the recovery console, you need to patch "cmdcons\0" into the bootsectorof the partition (8 bytes starting at 0x3 (4th byte)). We can do this patching in memory: strcpy((char *) 0x7c03, "cmdcons"); To boot the recovery console with chain.c32:

chain.c32: Chainboot failed!
When you try to boot the FreeDOS kernel with 'fs' specified, chain.c32 won't boot the FreeDOS kernel. boot: chain.c32 fs freedos=kernel.sys Loading the boot file... Booting... Chainboot failed! boot: It would be nicer that chain.c32 will automatically correct 'fs' to 'boot' behavior, so it won't fail. msdos= will probably behave the same as freedos=. - Gert

Patch for chain.c32: Set default boot drive to CD drive from which ISOLINUX is booted
chain.c32 of SYSLINUX 3.82 does set the boot drive passed to the DL register to 0x80 and not to the boot drive (CD-drive). This can be a problem if you want to chainload grldr (grub4dos bootloader) from a CD and if you want to let grldr search for its menu.lst file on the CD. For more info: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8457 This 1 line patch fixes the issue (Thanks to

[PATCH] chain.c32: add grubcfg= for passing an alternative config
filename to GRUB Legacy GRUB Legacy reserves 89 bytes for storing the filename of the configfile from memory address 0x8217 to 0x826f. whichsys.c32: execute specific command, based on Syslinux bootloader variant
I wrote a new module "whichsys.c32" which detemines which command to execute, based on the Syslinux bootloader variant. In the near future it should/can be replaced by a lua script. But for people who want small binaries: whichsys.c32 is +/- eighty times smaller than lua.c32, atm. Usage: whichsys.c32 [-iso- command] [-pxe- command] [-sys- command] Examples: whichsys.c32 -iso-

argv[0] doesn't contain module name and cat.c32 hangs with Syslinux 4.00-pre36
The program name of the module can't be retrieved with argv[0]. I tested it by running cat.c32 (com32/samples/cat.c32). In Syslinux 3.85, argv[0] returns an empty string. ELTORITO.SYS, MEMDISK, MDISKCHK.COM Commits
H. Peter, three simple commits here[1] (for_hpa branch). Gert, sample binaries are here[2]. --- mdiskchk: Add --no-sequential mode It might be useful to suppress MDISKCHK.COM's classic behaviour of probing all BIOS drive numbers in search of MEMDISKs. Some BIOSes might not enjoy being probed. --- memdisk: Correct El Torito termination response Two
