Reading multiple files into R
I want to read data from a number of files into R.
Reading individual files one by one requires writing enormous amount of
code that will look something like the following.

maptools:::dbf.read("wb-01vc.dbf")->dist1
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-02vc.dbf")->dist2
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-03vc.dbf")->dist3

Error with grad() for numerical differential of a function
Hello everyone,
I have programmed a function and, among other things, it has to compute the differential of a function. I have been using the function grad() and I have programmed some simulated studies. I have testes with 72,576 different combinations of the initial values and now I got an error in only 4 situations.
The error comes from the function grad() and I don't understand why. This

function gdist, dist and vegdist in mvpart
Dear R community,
I am analyzing plant communities with the function mvpart, using a
dissimilarit matrix as input. The matrix is calculated with the funtion
gdist.

sq=F) ~ beers + slope_dem + elev_dem+ plc_dem + pr_curv+

Compare two distance matrices
Hi all,
I am trying to compare two distance matrices with R. I would like to
create a XY plot of these matrices and do some linear regression on
it. But, I am a bit new to R, so i have a few questions (I searched in
the documentation with no success).
The first problem is loading a distance matrix into R. This matrix is
the output of a the Phylip program Protdist and lookes like this:

p-value for non-linear variable in overdispersed glm()
Dear all,
I am fitting an nonlinear glm() using optim() by first minimising
glm(resp~ var1 + var2, family=binomial, data=data)$deviance
where var1= exp(-a1*dist1), and var2= exp(-a2*dist2), where a1 and a2 are
parameters and dist1 and dist2 are independent variables.
Next, I calculate the value of var1 (and var2) by plugging in the value of
al1 (and al2) that minimises deviance,
and fit

OT: compare several graphs
Hi all,
this is OT, but maybe someone can give me a clue. I've got data from eye
tracker experiments (750 data points). These figures show how the data
lock like
|** * ***** |*** ******

|-------------- |---------------
Y axes display velocity, x axes display time, * are the data points.

Math Expression in 3D Plots
Is there anyway to label axes in 3D plots with mathematical expressions?
In the code below, I want to replace "delta_yrsed" with what "\Delta
\widehat{yrsed}" represents in TeX, but the [xyz]lab parameters of title3d
appear to only accept character strings.
require("rgl")
fn.delta.yrsed <- function(dist, delta.dist,

newbie: new_data_frame <- selected set of rows
Hello,
this is probably trivial but I failed to find this
particular snippet of code.
What I got:
my_dataframe (contains say a 40k rows and 4 columns)
distances (vector with euclidean distances between a
query vector and each of the rows of my_dataframe)
What I do:
after scaling data my_dataframe I calculate distances.
order them then extract top five hits

question about R
Hi,
At each iteration in my program,I need to generate tree vectors,X1,X2,X3,
from exponential distribution with parameters a1,a2,a3. Can you help me
please how can I do it such that it take a little time?
thank you

plot(my.procrustes.model) from library {vegan}
Dear All,
I would like to ask how to customize the graph corresponding to a
procrustes analysis.
I have to distance matrices, that I transform to two set of coordinates
by means of muti dimensional scaling:
library(mva)
c1<-cmdscale(mat.dist1)
c2<-cmdscale(mat.dist2)
I vant to rotate c2 on c1, and I use the "procrustes" analysis from the
{vegan} library.

Equivalent of pxechain.com for (USB key based) syslinux
Hello list,
I am trying to prepare a USB disk with syslinux that is meant to be able
to offer a choice among many different distributions. The goal is that I
should be able to dump each distribution's CD contents into a separate
subdirectory, and have a master menu that hands off to each
distribution's subdirectory.
A while back, when faced with a similar task on a PXE server, I came

PXELINUX, pxechain.com and Etherboot
Hi,
Anyone has tried to use pxechain with Etherboot? Here is my problem:
The Etherboot client had no problem to get the list of install servers
manual from the pxechain. But didn't matter which server was chosen,
Etherboot client always tried to use the first server to do the
installation. Etherboot 5.4 was used.
What the problem may be? PXEchain or Etherboot?
Thanks,
Joyce

ALTERNATE TFTP SERVERS
Hello there,
I suceeded in setting up WDS with PXELinux.
Now I'm trying to point the primary tftp server with pxechain.com to a
second tftp server. Actually it will just load the specified kernel, which
is given through APPEND. After that the tftp client just freezes.
Do I need to start with another tftp? The actual used tftp (and DHCP) server
comes from Win2008 R2 Server.

Bug in stepAIC?
Hi,
First of all, thanks for the great work on R in general, and MASS in
particular. It's been a life saver for me many times.
However, I think I've discovered a bug. It seems that, when I use
weights during an initial least-squares regression fit, and later try to
add terms using stepAIC(), it uses the weights when looking to remove
terms, but not when looking to add them:

Loess CI
I am trying to (semi) calculate the confidence intervals for a loess smoother
(function: loess()), but have been thus far unsuccessful.
The CI for the loess predicted values, yhat, are apparently
yhat +- t*s * sqrt(w^2), where s is the residual sum of squares and w is the
weight function
Correct me of I'm wrong, but R uses the tricubic function (1-abs(z)^3)^3,
where z = (x-xi)/h, where h

Failing to get pxechain.com working, SYSLINUX 3.86.
To start, I know I need to upgrade SYSLINUX, but since we are using the
CMenu's it's not that easy of an upgrade. I have been (slowly) working
on a new iPXE/pxelinux 4.04 install that I am migrating to.
However, I have an interesting problem. Using any of the examples I have
seen, I can not make pxechain.com work.

Chain-loading from WDS to PXELinux on a different tftp server
Hey guys,
We are going with WDS to fire up first to get the benefits of targeted M$ deployments. If you have the "handle unknown computers" off on your M$ Distribution point, then you can still use regular WDS which runs next as a PXE filter (DLL linked into WDS) to fire off anything you want to including PXELinux.
The stuff I was talking about before with PXELinux not working in

pxelinux and WDS
Hello,
We are trying to set up a configuration with pxelinux on a linux machine and WDS, allowing us to be free to boot linux netboot installers from the tftp server. We have validated that pointing our dhcp server to the wds server works perfectly.
Our idea was to use pxechain.com to launch the wdsnbp.com kernel as below :
