syslinux bootsector info?
Mr Anvin,
is there a specific loading address used with the Syslinux bootsector (to load ldlinux.sys)?
like msdos 0x70,
freedos 0x60
we're trying to have a SYS program that can create bootsector for other OS's than FreeDOS only. not much luck though :(
this way I'm trying to avoid the use of syslinux.exe/com
(need the diskspace that it would save by not including this program)

Large Floppy Images
I have periodically been trying to get memdisk to boot images
larger than your average 1.44Mb floppy and have always been
unsuccessful. I cannot boot anything greater than 1.44Mb. The systems
I'm attempting to do this with are not too old but they are not recent
either. One is a Asus P5A and the other is a Intel SE440BX both with
the most recent bios firmware patches available applied. If

Windows harddisk images.
Hello all,
I've been following this project with interest, and have had great fun
implementing Isolinux within the FreeDOS cdrom distribution.
Since I'm not that an expert at Linux, I would like to know how I can
*succesfully* generate a bootable image from a partition.
Situation is like this: (640MB RAM on system)
60GB IDE harddisk,
primary partition 1 win98 500MB
extended partition

SYSLINUX 3.00-pre8: Let's try this release thing again
Okay, spending the time to dot t's and cross i's (or something like
that), I think I have something now that can be called 3.00-worthy, so
let's call it a release candidate.
Changes over the earlier 3.00 prereleases:
- -m and -a options now supported by the DOS installer.
- PXELINUX now allows IP addresses, FQDNs, and truncated hostnames when
specifying an alternate TFTP server

COM32 module for detecting Memdisk?
I know there's a module to check which syslinux bootloader was used, but
is there also a module for detecting MEMDISK?
Basicly I want to use the same isolinux.cfg for a CD which boots an ISO.
Issue is that the inner ISO also uses same Isolinux (+ menu), which
isn't very user-friendly.
So:
CD --> ISOLINUX (menu) --> MEMDISK CDROM.ISO --> ISOLINUX (menu) -->
diskette

syslinux 4.06pre11 issues
I've recently purchased an SSD with the goal of having a portable
MS-Windows installation, something which Windows 8's "Windows to Go"
feature allows (install to, and boot/run from, USB flash device).
Housing the SSD in an external Zalman VE300 case allows presenting ISO
files as hardware CD/DVD/BD drive with inserted medium. Having the ISO
files present, it's tempting

Pxelinux/memdisk with XP "MS-DOS" boot disk
I'm trying to use this universal DOS TCP/IP boot disk available here:
http://members.iinet.net.au/~bdriver/bootdisk/
It requires an MS-DOS formatted disk created by Windows XP. It works great as a floppy but doesn't boot at all with memdisk. The problem can be simplified down to just the XP boot disk. If you make an MS-DOS startup disk with XP on a floppy, dd the floppy to an image

retrieve drive letter of USB Media.
Does SYSLINUX have any idea which DOS driveletter would be assigned to the disk it is booting from?
At www.veder.com someone is trying to build a USB flash drive.
However, FreeDOS does not seem to boot correctly from it
(bootsector trouble maybe, or kernel itself is confusing drives),
thus we're thinking of using Syslinux + Memdisk + bootimage,
but somehow we want to be able to also access the

PXE booting 2.88MB floppy
Hi,
I'm sorry to bring this up again but I can't quit get this too work. I'm trying
to build a 2.88 floppy image so that I can use PXE to load Ghost.
I'm useing the following to get a copy of the bootsector:
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=bootblock bs=512 count=1
Then I build the image file with:
mformat -C -t 160 -s 18 -h 2 -B bootblock x:
Then use mcopy to put the required

syslinux / antique computers
Hi,
is there an easy way to circumvent the SYSLINUX novice protection thing?
intended users don't know about CTRL key to circumvent it.
I'm trying to make a generic bootdisk for systems of 8086 - Pentium4.
however the bootdisk is slow, so I'd like to use Syslinux + Memdisk to load a diskette image.
then the text displayed to user will be:
1) FreeDOS bootdisk (accelerated, 386

booting w98 bootdisk via memdisk
Hallo,
I try to boot the windows 98 bootdisk via memdisk. It doesn't work
completely.
Booting a freedos FD image works, booting the windows 98 image works
too.
But the windows 98 boot disk then should extract the file "ebd.cab" with
the file "extract.com", and that step fails.
Is that a syslinux problem or a windows problem?

PXELINUX keeppxe mem footprint
Hi,
I want to use PXELINUX to load a DOS disk image which I currently use for
Win2K/XP unattended installs. I want to move away from reliance on specific
NDIS2 drivers and use the 3Com UNDIS3C driver instead. I have used this
successfully to start the MSClient, but the problem is that the UNDI and PXE
layer take about 90K of base memory, which means that WINNT.EXE has
insufficent memory to run

feature request: gzip support in syslinux itself
HPA,
is it possible to add GZ support in syslinux itself?
Some standalone software compresses very well, but is not compressed.
Example is the Memtest86+ binary (90KB uncompressed --> 35KB gzip'd) and maybe Smart Boot Manager (gzip'd COM32 binary instead of normal COM32 binary?).
I'm using both on a simple bootdisk, and all space savings are welcome.
a workaround could ofcourse

chainload cdrom
perhaps the boot-from-cdrom code in Smart Boot Manager?

>>>
No, since booting from CD-ROM requires that the El Torito part of the
BIOS is activated, which it won't be if it didn't boot from CD-ROM in
the first place.

seatools for DOS
I downloaded the 'seatools for DOS' diskette creator on seagate website. it's a windows program that creates the diskette; so a floppy disk must be present in the drive. running the program is ok, but creating the diskette fails, it says "the current diskette format not valid". while the diskette is blank, vfat, mounted and linked to a: in wine; so everything seems to be ok.

Windows XP fixmbr from Centos?
I am still dead on my corporate system, and the XP boot CD I brought
won't boot. And so far I have not found anyone here at the IETF meeting
that happens to have one in their bag of tricks...
So I found instructions on doing this in Ubuntu:
http://www.arsgeek.com/2008/01/15/how-to-fix-your-windows-mbr-with-an-ubuntu-livecd/
I have my Centos install CD 1 of 6 that gets me into rescue.
