feature requests for 3.01
1. \ at end of lines (in pxelinux.cfg/default, etc) causing/allowing
line-wrap ?
for those of us who prefer 80 column screens, and 1 item per line.
2. label-specific APPEND adds onto global APPEND
( currently replaces it IIUC )
maybe this needs a separate keyword ADDAPPEND
(255 char limit still applies im sure)
3. strip trailing # comments

unknown boot options on kernel command line.
changing i386 COMMAND_LINE_SIZE to 1024
attached is a simplistic fix to change kernel's command-line size from
256 to 1024,
tomatch capability in syslinux 3.08.
It seems to work. Is this all there is to it ?
One of the reasons I did this was to figure out what extra options are
appearing, and why.

debugging
dear R wizards---I am not sure at what point I owe pennance for asking
so many questions. I am now wrangling debugging. I want to write a
function
assert = function( condition, ... ) {
if (!condition) {
cat(...); cat("\n");
browser();
}
stopifnot(condition);
}
assert( nrow(ds)==12, "My data set has ", nrow(ds), ", rows which is a
bad error.");

pxeboot to runlevel 4
folks,
Im trying to boot to runlevel 4 explicitly, using this stanza: ie with a
single 4 at end of APPEND line.

MENU LABEL ^j. runlevel 4 2.6.11-r10c2-soekris-v1

memdisk and floppy images on 4801
Im trying to boot memtest86 via pxelinux, memdisk,
I found this advice on http://forum.x86-secret.com/viewtopic.php?t=2906
folks are making the image match a floppy size by one of the following:
dd if=memtest86+-1.xx.bin of=memtest.img bs=360k count=1 conv=sync
or
dd bs=360k count=1 conv=sync if=memtest86+-1.xx.bin|gzip > memtest.gz
I did the former, it did suppress the warning/errors I saw

Recommended backup procedure for standalone samba file server configuration?
Hi everyone, I am running Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic with Samba version
4.7.6-Ubuntu.
*Background / Problem Context*
I have recently setup a server where I wish to use a standalone Samba
file server in conjunction with SVN and git and then have all these
services share the same username and password credentials. I wish to
achieve this without using any centralised LDAP or Active Directory or

bad CF disks, etc
hi folks,
I have 3 CF disks, 16M, 512M, 4G, only the 512 is working on my soekris 4801
other 2 show:
Cannot get disk parameters
coming from chain.c32
chain.c32 is not to blame, as bios also gives similar error

No Boot device available, enter monitor.
all 3 CFs are readable/writable on my desktop
after fiddling with various fdisk parameters,
I dd'd the image off the 512, and

hanging localboot
Ive got a soekris 4801 on which Ive used pxelinux...
its bios is set to go to pxeboot 1st, then localboot.
Ive got:
label bootlocal
MENU label ^9 Boot Local

but using hangs:
Booting from local disk...

pxelinux cmdline preparation for klibc kinit
Im trying to get 2.6.17-rc4-mm1 (which includes klibc) working on an
nfs-root setup.
Its not working, so I started adding printf()s (not printk()s !)
1st thing I notice is arg5 is empty, but arg 6 is real
I could imagine this unexpected situation confusing kinit (will check..)
Or is that empty arg intentional, so that it marks the beginning of
pxelinux addons ?

Pigeonhole-sieve auto-reply
A vaction message does not need to be sending text about a leave of
absense. It is just a rule with criteria being executed. Change the rule
to whatever you want, get to know the sieve 'language'.
I asked once here something about executing rules on dragging messages
to mailboxes/folders, they refered me to imapsieve or sieveimap. Maybe
this could help you also.

patch for acinclude.m4
The configure script for vorbis-tools requires one to manually specify:
--with-ogg-prefix=PATH
--with-vorbis-prefix=PATH
--with-ao-prefix=PATH
This is quite a pain to type.
It would seem that most people will be installing all of these packages
into the same $prefix. So in the absense of specifying these flags, it
would seem suitable to just check for the appropriate

FW: computing a p-value ...
Thanks to Rolph Turner and Jason Turner ...
I guess I was too excited about getting back on the list after an absense of
several years ... I'll be a little more thoughtful about the problem before
posting next time, and a little less trigger-happy with the "Send" e-mail
button.
Never-the-less, much appreciated.

extlinux 3.20-pre8 notes
hi Peter, everyone,
I recently installed extlinux on my CF drive.
after a few botches, it works, with menu.c32 too.
Heres a few notes/observations:
- menuing seems pretty sensitive to presence of tabs in extlinux.conf,
unlike with pxelinux.cfg/default, Is this an oversight,
or something Im misremembering ?
- extlinux doesnt have the timeout after menu-choice.
if I dont choose, it times out and
