Re: SYSLINUX Digest, Vol 33, menu.c32 chaining
Hello,
many of our platforms do not have a integrated floppy, some even don''t have a floppy controller. As pxelinux still has a problem with machines without a floppy in combination with some bios versions I need to chainload a different bootstrap loader which works on the floppyless platforms. But I also need to load a BartPE and the other BS loader does not support that. So I tried to

Memdisk and big floppy images
The narod.ru images are super outdated (FreeDOS kernel 2028) unfortunately.
If you are interested I could provide a 5MB FDD image template based on
FreeDOS 2041 kernel (the latest available at that time in 2014) where you
would just inject your ROM and EXE (and possibly adjust autoexec.bat to
autostart/apply the FW update). It's a minimal FreeDOS FDD image that
defaults to a clean boot with

bug / incompatibility with USB booting in Syslinux 3.00 pre9 ?
Hi,
I'm Florent BERANGER, from Flonix ( http://www.flonix.com ).
After several tests, we have found that Syslinux 3.00 pre9 is no longer
compatible with USB stick booting.
Syslinux 2.13 works fine with this feature.
Error infos :
Syslinux 3.00 pre9 only displays its version and a new line with a "a"
character and then hangs.

Changing USB-key geometry from syslinux.exe?
I'm playing with syslinux 3.0x to get PC to boot from USB key...
In particular, I'm giving a look at the "ZIP geometry hack" to get some more
BIOS boot working with USB...
Some question:
- if we have a usbkey with a single partition, can we change the geometry
without requiring to reformat the partition? Or is a reformat unavoidable?
- at the moment we can use the "ZIP

Unbootable machine
Hello Peter & Jeremy,
I've found an ordinary desktop PC (with Phoenix Award BIOS 6.00PG) that
won't boot off a USB stick created by livecd-tools-024 with syslinux
(tested both versions 3.75 and 3.81).
The boot process drops to the "boot:" prompt with an error message:
could not find kernel image: linux
The same USB stick boots fine on any other computer I could find.

SYSLINUX 3.74-pre17: (hopefully final) release candidate
Let's try to get this thing released. Dag: will you do your RPM
buildathon on this drop?
Changes in 3.74:
* New UI directive, which allows a more natural way to specify
a menu system (or not.) With the UI directive specifying
the menu system, the DEFAULT directive can be used to select
the default entry inside the menus.
* kbdmap.c32: new module

Trouble with Superfloppy format
Hello,
are there known issues with some bioses not booting from Superfloppy format?
All I get is the Syslinux (c) line and nothing else happens afterwords.
Everything works fine if a partition is added to the device. Unfortunately
however the target device can not be partitioned.
Any hint?

SYSLINUX 2.10-pre2 is out
I have released SYSLINUX 2.10-pre2. I *really* would like testing
reports for this one, especially ISOLINUX, since I've included Knut
Petersen's fix for Award BIOSes...
Changes in 2.10:
* MEMDISK: Handle images compressed with zip as well as with
gzip. Some Windows-based image tools apparently generate
these kinds of images by default. Patch by Patrick

USB-FDD
Hi,
I'm working on making an USB flash disk bootable and have succeeded in
booting Linux using syslinux from disk in USB-HDD mode. Is there a way
to do it in USB-FDD mode, possibly also using syslinux as a bootloader?
Thanks in advance.

After USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
Hi,

It appears to be related to the choice of CHS addressing with
the FAT filesystem. This opens the door for misperceived factors
of heads per cylinder and sectors per heads.
My current suspicion is that the partition end did not expose
the effective factors in its end CHS address, so

Very slow disk performance on CentOS 4.5
I recently moved my CentOS 4.5 disk from a Lenovo ThinkCentre M52
(3.2 GHz Pentium 4) to a Lenovo ThinkCentre M55 (3.4 GHz Core 2
Duo). I had to install the SMP kernel, but other than that
everything just worked. I did have an issue with accidentally
initializing my /boot partition, but that was my own fault.
But the system was not feeling right. Some things just seemed to be
slower,

Booting LINUX from external USB Hard Drive
Hi,
I would like to boot a LINUX system from an external USB Hard Drive.
Motherboard (ASUS P4P800) supports boot from USB with or without floppy
emulation. Is it possible to use syslinux for booting without any floppy
or CD, just from the external USB drive?
Regards... Bela

Memdisk and big floppy images
Dear Syslinux folks,
For a firmware update I am following the Gentoo Wiki [1] to create a floppy
image of 20 MB, so that the vendor update utility fits.
Unfortunately, FreeDOS does not load, and it seems to hang loading the
FreeDOS kernel. The original FreeDOS image boots. Do you know if that issue
is memdisk related? It?s started from GRUB with the commands below.
linux16 /boot/memdisk

nopassany parameter causing trouble
I'm running into an issue which I didn't expect to encounter.
When specifying the "nopassany" parameter to hide physical drives, I'm
getting different output from ELTORITO.SYS (v1.5, syslinux distro) such
that it fails.
My intent is a LiveCD functionality with a DOS RAMDISK program taking
over as drive C:, meaning either no FAT partitions on harddisks and
removable disks

ISOLINUX fails at boot on Award BIOS v6.00PG

syslinux 4.06pre11 issues
I've recently purchased an SSD with the goal of having a portable
MS-Windows installation, something which Windows 8's "Windows to Go"
feature allows (install to, and boot/run from, USB flash device).
Housing the SSD in an external Zalman VE300 case allows presenting ISO
files as hardware CD/DVD/BD drive with inserted medium. Having the ISO
files present, it's tempting

problems booting isolinux
Hello List,
I have used isolinux for years without problems. Recently I decided to
upgrade from 3.09 to 3.11. Every CD I create can be read on my Vectra
(Pentium 3)
and all other Pentium 3 boxes, but all my Pentium 4 boxes will not
boot (they ignore
the CD and boot from hard disk). The bochs VM will boot the CDs fine
just like the
Pentium 3 machines. I have tried 3.09 (which worked
