I guess that R does not know about ANSI sequences, and it calculates the width of the prompt including the characters in the sequences. You cannot do much about this, except maybe use a prompt that has two lines. You can put the colored text and whatever you like in the first line, and the second line can be non-ANSI. How, exactly, does CentOS-6.3 with udev recognize an USB modem when it is plugged in. How is it indicated? What other configuration is required? OpenSSH 5.1p1 was just installed on Linux machines here. It appears that escape sequences are not being passed to the underlying terminal for in- terpretation and control.
