Where to obtain (how to build) small enough workablekernel?
rename the VMlinuz*.* to file 'vmlinuz' (no quotes ofcourse). a bootfloppy leaves me enough diskspace, not 860KB. format as FAT12 (ofcourse), install Syslinux (I do this on Win2K with syslinux.exe A:, win9x: syslinux.com A:) my example: http://www.fdos.org/ripcord/beta9rc4/fdboot.img unfortunately no Linux involved. Is building a load balance setup like this workable?
Okay, before anything else, all I'm using samba for is a "Windows looking" frontend to cups. Eg, so the users don't know I'm getting rid of the windows 2003 printserver and replacing it with a pair of linux printservers (Samba/Cups) I'd like to have 2 (or 3) printservers, all the same build of linux (debian), cloned, etc. users will be able to go to \\printserver

Writing a workable function
After searching in R- Introduction, FAQ, help... I don't understand this: I write a function in a file (.R): tt <- function(mc) { date() mc<-read.csv2("machines.txt",na.strings="") date() } I source it in R and I type tt(). The answer is > tt() [1] "Mon Aug 14 11:18:25 2000" > The instructions following the first "date()" are ignored. Why?

Mongrel - good enough?
I want to deploy RoR site''s (Intranet) for small offices/businesses that will get light traffic (estimating at max about 40 hits per minute at peak times). Lots of AJAX going on more than anything (update checks to the DB - Postgresql). I''d rather not use Lighttd, Apache, etc. as I want to have a streamlined install that is very easy for the end users. The catch is I

OFFTOPIC - ACPI ERROR during compiling kernel (ACL support for samba)
Hi Everyone, please apologise to me for this message. Well, I want to compile 2.4.22 kernel because I need ACL for samba. :) I have Suse 8.2 with 2.4.20 kernel. The problem is that I don't know what I must set up in menuconfig, so I copied config.gz from /proc an import this to 2.4.22 menuconfig, that checked ACL, after it, make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install install During

saving and loading complex objects
Dear Sir: When I try to save large and very complex recursive objects with some components containing models (such as the output from arima or lm ), the resulting file sizes increase by 4 meg per save. example directory: amex 8 meg argentina 12 meg australia 16 meg ... Moreover, I am unable to read these file objects back into R. I note that readBin and writeBin

restricting bandwidth using TC
Hello, I am trying to get the TC command to work on our debian box to limit traffic in and out to 12 Meg. The command I am using is: tc qdisc add dev eth0 root tbf rate 12000kbit latency 25ms burst 1600 tc qdisc add dev eth1 root tbf rate 12000kbit latency 25ms burst 1600 The problem I am having is that the bandwidth exceeds the 12 Meg by almost 5 Meg. Any help is appreciated.

Bass response with Ogg Vorbis
I'm a bass player, I admit it. I came across a number of people talking about bass response with Ogg Vorbis and it piqued my interest, I live for this stuff. I am using the Ogg files to distribute songs as converted right from the 32 bit masters. This is a much different thing than ripping a 16 bit CD audio file that has been mushed and compressed much before it winds up as an Ogg file. When

1.4 memory leak?
Is there a memory leak in asterisk 1.4? The other day with asterisk 1.4.0 I noticed that top was reporting a RES of 106 meg for the asterisk process. Restarting the process brought it down to more like 4 meg, but it grew over time to be 20+. So yesterday morning I upgraded to 1.4.4 in case this is something that had been addressed. Again I started with a RES of like 4meg or so, but this

Question concerning booting from Floppy Drive
First I'd like to thank you, and everyone who has contributed to the isolinux development. It has been the solution to many of my development needs. Currently I am creating a Linux system that runs directly from CD. Currently the CD is working and I am using isolinux to boot the CD. The compressed kernel is approximately 2 meg and the compressed initial ramdisk is approximately 4 meg.

The new image is a slice of an incremental backup and is 101Meg in size. the command line is: time /home/wally/rsync/rsync-2.6.2 -av --rsh=rsh --backup --stats --block-size=<xxx> --write-batch=kbup1aaa
