Problem using syslinux with hard drive partition
I have been succesful in using syslinux to boot from a hard drive, by dd'ing
a Linux (LRP) image onto the drive and then running syslinux (i.e. dd
if=the_image of=/dev/hda followed by a syslinux /dev/hda), however I'm having
problems getting it to work from a partition on the hardrive. I'm trying to
use syslinux on a small 100MB FAT16 partition (same commands as before, just

syslinux and btrfs-formatted dos/MBR partition
Hello Gene, thanks for your reply.
Yes BIOS mode. The config wants a menu, which loads fine under ext4
and not under btrfs. Under btrfs I have also tried to remove the
syslinux.cfg file altogether (which should trigger the boot: prompt if
I am not mistaken) and the result is the same: only the copyright line
appears and no prompt.
The three letter sequence is EDD.
The disk is 160GB, here is the

Samba and WinXP
Is there a howto guide somewhere on how to get Samba (as a server) working with
a Windows XP client? I'm using a binary Samba server package for LRP (Samba
version 2.0.4b), and while it works fine with Windows 2000 and Mac OS X 10.2.X,
I can't get a Windows XP Embedded client to connect. Any help/info greatly
appreciated.

External HD partitioning & formatting considerations
Hi,
One of my clients has a mixed Linux/Mac OS/Windows environment in his office.
He just purchased a 4 TB external hard disk, which he intends to use on his
various workstations.
Up until recently, I've been using plain old MBR/FAT for hard disks in mixed
environments. Fire up fdisk, make one big 0b type partition, and then format it
using mkdosfs.
Unfortunately, there's a 2 TB limit

How to understand partition table on hybrid ISO image?
Hi,
if I inspect an hybrid ISO with tools like fdisk and gdisk, then looks
like hybrid ISO has both the MBR and GPT in order to support both the
BIOS and UEFI:
# gdisk -l /dev/sdb
GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.10
Partition table scan:
MBR: MBR only
BSD: not present
APM: not present
GPT: present
Found valid MBR and GPT. Which do you want to use?
1 - MBR
2 - GPT
3 - Create blank GPT

Creating a bootable partition on a USB disk with syslinux
Hello,
I have a 2GB USB disk on key on /dev/sdb1.
I had created on it one partition (FAT16).
This partition holds all cylinders of the USB disk.
I want to create a bootable Linux USB disk.
For this, I tried:
syslinux -s /dev/sdb1
An than I ran:
fdisk -l /dev/sdb
Disk /dev/sdb: 2048 MB, 2048729600 bytes
64 heads, 62 sectors/track, 1008 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 3968 * 512 = 2031616

isohybrid boot from logical partition
Hi,
i think i found the reason for the boot failure in the definition of
Extended Boot Records.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_boot_record#Values
"Starting sector = relative offset between this EBR sector and the
first sector of the logical partition.
Note: This is often the same value for each EBR on the same hard disk;
usually 63 for Windows XP or older."
So if

Syslinux & Error 440D
Hi.
I'm trying to install the latest version of syslinux on a FAT12 partition on
a 16M Flash disk.
However, despire reformatting, repartioning, and running both lock c: and
fdisk /mbr, I keep receiving an "ERROR 440D: Unable to lock drive for
exclusive access" message. Do you have any suggestions on how to bypass
this problem? Please respond ASAP.
Thanks,

Way to remove SYSLINUX?
Hi, i was installing syslinux to a usb drive when, through a typo('sda'
instead of of 'sdb'), accidently installed it to my windows partition, which
has made it unbootable, i tryed restoring the MBR with windows FDISK and
the /MBR option but while it overwrote grub it didn't do so for syslinux,
does anyone know how to remove syslinux from the partition?

Re: Disk partitions and LVM limits - SUMMARY
Thank you all for the help.
I'm writing this summary message because of people requests. I haven't tried
all of this. I just collected it and organized it.
You've got a big storage. Now what?
The short answer is: "Just connect it. It should work."
I'll play safe by saying that the following applies to <10TB storage. Some
people reported file systems of 80TB.

Creating HD Boot Images
I have been trying to track down information on building HD boot images for
ISOLINUX and MEMDISK, and so far, haven't had a whole lot of luck.
I've found a number of sources describing the process of setting up
ISOLINUX and MEMDISK, and how to configure the boot CD to boot various
OS's. I've also read through Bart Lagerweij's BootCD/ModBoot pages, and

isohybrid --uefi - resulting EF00 partition too small
Hello everyone,
I am maintaining a distribution loosely based on LFS and am now trying
to add UEFI support. Integrating a FAT formatted partition image
containing, preloader, gummiboot, kernel and initramfs correctly results
in a ISO image that is bootable on BIOS and UEFI systems if booted from
the optical drive.
However, when I run
isohybrid --uefi name-of.iso

"WARNING: fdisk GPT support is currently new"
Hi,
I'm currently teaching Linux system administration to a class at the
local "chambre de commerce". The course is based mainly on a minimal
CentOS 7 installation.
Usually my preferred tool for handling manual GPT partitioning is gdisk,
which is not installed on a minimal install. I just gave the good old
fdisk a spin, which enables GPT partition table creation with the

syslinux and btrfs-formatted dos/MBR partition
Hello syslinux list,
I have installed Arch over a btrfs-formatted dos/MBR primary
partition* (no btrfs subvolumes, just installing everything including
/boot in the root of the btrfs).
I have been unsuccessful for several days trying to get it to boot
with syslinux (6.02-8 package from Arch, also tried 4.07-1 Arch
package). All I am getting is the copyright header line and a blinking

FW: boot fails on some system
If everything looks good on stick (active partition, partition ids,
etc), but one computer happilly boots and the other doesn't, obviously
the non-booting one doesn't like the mbr or the partitioning.
For the mbr liking:
The first 440 bytes can be any "normal" mbr. First take a backup of
the one you have on the USB stick/disk now with "dd if=/dev/sdx bs=440

Dummy question on Syslinux and MBR
Hi,
I've seen that syslinux does include also a MBR record.
But how can I install it on a HD under Windows? And how can I backup the
previous MBR?
Does syslinux help us on this task also?
bye!
