Is this just anti-Ogg FUD?
I was recently talking to a friend of mine who produces what's widely
referred to as "techno", music that's heavy on electronically generated
loops and effects, samples, and has plenty of bass.
He doesn't like ogg for a few reasons - he sent me a rather long email, and
I've stripped out the nonsense from it (he has some technically irrelevant
reasons for not liking

Complicated nls formula giving singular gradient message
I'm attempting to calculate a regression in R that I normally use Prism for,
because the formula isn't pretty by any means.
Prism presents the formula (which is in the Prism equation library as
Heterologous competition with depletion, if anyone is curious) in these
segments:
KdCPM = KdnM*SpAct*Vol*1000
R=NS+1
S=(1+10^(X-LogKi))*KdCPM+Hot
a=-1*R
b=R*S+NS*Hot+BMax
c = -1*Hot*(S*MS+BMax)

WinNT authentication problem
I am a newbie here and I have been going around in circles with this problem.
I have set up samba to use encrypted p/w and use a WinNT4 sp4 client with
registry changed for plaintextpasswords.
I can 'map network drive' successfully and peruse all the shares but if I try
to use the 'Network Neighborhood', then I can see the shares (so I guess that I
have been authenticated

Fast Two-Dimensional Optimization
Dear R Helpers,
I have attempted "optim" function to solve a two-dimensional optimization
problem. It took around 25 second to complete the procedure.
However, I want to reduce the computation time: less than 7 second. Is there
any optimization function in R which is very rapid?
Best Regards,

invalidate: busy buffer
Hi,
Since upgrading to 2.4.14 with the ext3 patch, I've been getting the
following on bootup:
VFS: Mounted root (ext3 filesystem) readonly.
change_root: old root has d_count=5
Trying to unmount old root ... invalidate: busy buffer
invalidate: busy buffer
invalidate: busy buffer
invalidate: busy buffer
invalidate: busy buffer
okay
Is the invalidate busy buffer bit anything to worry about?

an alternative to R for nonlinear stat models
Hi
I implemented the age-structure model in Gove et al (2002) in R, which is a
nonlinear statistical model. However running the model in R was very slow.
So Dave Fournier suggested to use the AD Model Builder Software package and
helped me implement the model there.
ADMB was incredibly fast in running the model:
While running the model in R took 5-10 minutes, depending on the

online updates
Hi. I'm looking for ideas or suggestions for field updates for an embedded system running linux with syslinux as the bootloader. The requirements are to be able to upload an image online (probably a private network using sftp) while the device is running, do some error checking on the new image and then reboot the device and run the new version. I'll be running off a CF card. The image is

win98 dos client connection breaks
I have a lab with 24 pc's I'm trying to reimage. I have a DOS network boot disk (version==win98) and all clients connect to the Samba share. When I start the image download with xcopy, the session appears to hang immediately. With one or two, a small amount of hard drive activity will continue, but the file copy will fail. When I connect to a win2k share on similar server hardware, I

AD DC on virtual machine
Hi,
In my last job, I could see the disasters of restoring virtual machine with
Microsoft AD as a standalone domain controller (a day reinstalling the
domain controller).
What are the recommendations on virtualizing Samba AD DC according to samba
team ? I found nothing on the wiki about it.
Is that the best solution is to have a physical secondary controller ?
Thanks.

PXElinux Modification Question
Hi,
We are new to PXElinux and we are using it in our test lab
to do provisioning. When the systems come up there is a
PXElinux menu to boot local(default) or boot to the imaging
environment (linux). It works great, but we have to visit
each machine whenever we want to create or restore a disk
image.
Now we would like to be able to remotely force a system to
re-image itself. The

Alternating boot default entry every reboot
Hi,
I am currently using isolinux (syslinux-6.03) in a clonezilla setup. It
boots fine, however I want to have a setup where the default boot selection
alternates every boot.
* First boot : Default is menu item 0
* Second boot : Default is menu item 1
* Third boot : Default is menu item 0
...
The idea is that when it is booted into clonezilla the clonezilla script
checks if the system needs to

upgraded to 3.0.2 -> funkyness in machine accounts
My old technique was to
1) remove all machine accounts from ldap
2) reimage all machines
3) create all the machine accounts with smbldap-adduser -w
4) switch all machines to domain mode
that does not work anymore...
the machine accounts exist in ldap
but i get this internally contradictory info in the logs

bareos on CentOS 6
Hi, folks,
I'm hoping *someone* here has worked a bit with bareos. I've tried
posting to the google groups for it... and haven't even had one person
view my post....
It was working fine, backing up windows boxes for months. Then, about a
week ago, the server got a regular yum update, and rebooted... and it's
broken. A job will start... and just keep running forever (as in,

Moving hard drives
Hi All,
I have a server that is running nicely, except I have hit the maximum RAM (4gb) and I wish to add more.
It is an ASUS board, AMD X64 dual core, nvidia nic.
What I want going to move to is a dell board, Intel Pentium M dual code, which supports 8gb of RAM.
Can I just unplug the HD and move it to the new server and boot it up?
I assume that the NIC will need to be re-setup, but what

Samba domain name in short format
Hi Rowland,
You are right. We are running some old software here, such as NIS. All these started in 20 years ago when I joined the group and we had about 20-30 workstations running Linux. NIS was chosen at that time to manage user accounts. Some users were not familiar with Linux, so we provided Samba to them so that they could map Linux file systems to their computers. I know NIS is old
