Mini-PC box to run server
On the cheap side, the ITX or even MicroATX machines work great. These
are commodity items, so they tend to be far less expensive than custom
solutions. Various manufacturers, but we've had very good success with
any of the AOpen MicroATX boards and their slimline MicroATX case:

OT: [opensuse-offtopic] Microsoft struggles to get Hyper-V drivers in Linux kernel (fwd)
Not too sure what to think about this, considering M$'s
track record with OSS and other competitors.

offtopic: possible asterisk meeting saturday amsterdam
hello everyone,
theres a bi-monthly computer fair in amsterdam on saturday and it looks
like a few asterisk users will be attending, and hopefully some more might
be able to turn up. admittedly this probably is a bad idea to advertise
because the more asterisk people the less likely i am to find cheap AVM
Fritz ISDN cards - but what the hell.

[OFFTOPIC] integrated LSI 3008 :: number of hdd support
In my experience the mass market HBAs and RAID cards typically do support
only 8 or 16 drives. For the internal variety in a standard rack-mount
server you'll usually see either 2 or 4 iPass cables (each of which support
4 drives) connected to the backplane. The marketing material you've
referenced has a white lie in it: supporting more than 16 drives on a
single card is very likely only

OFFTOPIC: Ioannidis et. al. on non-reproducible research
**** OFFTOPIC ****
These links were sent to me by a friend and are kind of a followup to
Sarah Goslee's recent off topic post on the Rogoff Excel spreadsheet
goof, which I appreciated, that I hope will be of interest to this
list's readers. I apologize if I have taken too much license. I will
also crosspost it to stackexchange, where it is more appropriate.

vorbis_encode_init() bitrate arguments - offtopic
Hi,
It's a bit offtopic for this list, but you might be able to help. For
libvorbis rc3, what is the correct bitrate parametrization for the call
vorbis_encode_init()?
For rc2, it worked calling it the following way:
vorbis_encode_init( &vorbisInfo,
2, // two channels
44100, // 44.1kHz

Offtopic: 3ware Raid Controllers
Hi!
I know this is a little bit offtopic, but i couldn't think of any other
place where i can get uninfluenced first hand information on these
controllers :)
I've read about and experienced data loss/system lockup with older 3ware
controllers, but the 3ware Escalade 7xxx (i'm especially interested in the
7850) sounds too good to ignore it (8 channels, 8 drives, raid 0/1/5/10,

Thanks for the tip. I added the calls, and it works now.

Offtopic: royalty free music for multimedia presentation.
Hi!
Sorry for being somewhat offtopic but I'm hoping someone can help me. I need
to download some music I can use in a one-time non-commercial multimedia
presentation (technically speaking I'll be demo-ing ogg123 :-)). I don't care
what it is, only it musn't suck and be somewhat suitable for general audience.
RMS's speeches simply don't cut :-)
So far all music I found on

Slightly offtopic: IRC channel archives
Hi all.
I fear I''m slightly offtopic with this question, but I''ll keep it short:
who is (or feels) responsible for the #lartc irc-channel in oftc.net?
I''d appreciate if that person would get in contact with me (off-list) in
order to discuss some ideas I have. Thanks in advance.
Bye, Mike

syslinux on Windows to USB compactflash disk
Hi folks,
I'm trying to make a CompactFlash bootable with SYSLINUX. The hard part is
that I'm trying to run SYSLINUX on Windows 2000 and am attempting to write
to the compactflash that's plugged in via a USB reader/writer. Its not
working -- Windows complains about the 16-bit subsystem wanting direct
access to the drive.
So then is the problem SYSLINUX fighting with Windows or

[OFFTOPIC] integrated LSI 3008 :: number of hdd support
Hi guys! Unfortunately there is no offtopic list but the subject
is somehow related to centos as the OS is/will be centos :)
So, under this thin cover i ask :
Is it possible that for a SAS controler like LSI 3008 that in specs
says that : "This high-performance I/O controller supports T-10
data protection model and optical support, PCIe hot plugging,
and up to 1,000 connected devices"

Offtopic: Which SAS / SATA HBA do you recommend?
Hi all,
Sorry for the offtopic question. I hope though that others on this list
or reading the archive find the answers useful too.
It seems the Adaptec 1405 4port SAS HBA I bought only works with RHEL
and SuSE through a closed source driver, and thus is quite useless :-(
I was stupid enought to think "Works with RHEL and SuSE" meant "Certified

[slightly offtopic] A small, fast Apache2.2 (if there is such a thing)
Hi.
I''m using Apache2.2 built from source + mod-proxy + ssl + svn.
Everything works fine but I''m sure you I could disable a ton of
modules during the build process and in httpd.conf to speed things up
and run a tighter memory footprint.
Has anyone bothered building Apache2.2 from source disabling all the
unneeded modules.
I am planning on going through the Apache docs but I
